I saw Avatar a few weeks back and it was pretty breathtaking, though I can see why people say that Avatar wasn't the best. I suppose that flaw is brought on by the movie's predictability. When you start removing all the fluff, Avatar's plot is based on the generic "man is evil" theme, but the redeeming quality of Avatar for me was the fact that the cretors were able to bring to life a planet like Pandora. They were able to conceptualize its flora and fauna, traditions of the natives, beliefs. That alone makes it pretty darn amazing, hahaha. While it does share similar themes with other movies, books and games, Avatar still manages to stand out with the amazing retelling of something we've all heard before.

The Rooster Teeth guys said they probably wouldn't have liked it if they hadn't seen it in IMAX.

I agree somewhat Saori; Though I didn't find it that predictable, Pandora and the Na'vi are my favorite parts of the movie (the survival guide book is awesome). I would love to have a sandbox type of game that let me explore Pandora as a Na'vi, flying, riding, swimming, or just running and jumping around. At the end of the day return to Hometree to interact with the clan, and finally retire in my hammock so I could get up the next day and do it some more.

When I get it on Blu-ray I'm going to watch it a lot, because the scenes with Neytiri teaching Jake are the closest I'll get to the movie-based game I'd like to play.

Oh my god, it was just incredible. Plot was pretty good, basically ripped from Dances with Wolves, but i loved that movie so it was fine. Avatar was pretty powerful film and couple of times i had teary eyes. It was my first 3D movie and i was simply blown away. The world of Pandora was breathtaking and i enjoyed it to the fullest. My friend with whom i went to see it had seen couple of other 3D movies told me that Avatar was far superior compared to anything he had previously seen. I am definitely going to buy the bluray version, which means i am going to buy a bluray player ;-)

For me Avatar wasn't just a 3D movie. It was an experience.

Hopefully something we can all enjoy -

Personally, after reading a review that mentioned Fern Gully, that's all I could think of.

But this one seemed humorous.

it's more exasperation than rage. i mean, at this point saying that Avatar had an unoriginal story is like saying Santa Claus wears a red and white suit.

Hey, if people want revenge, going to Superman Returns moved me. That movie was an experience for me.
So flame away about how bad that movie was if you want to retaliate. I've lived through it many times.

B)

Still, you have to admit the Pocahontas thing was funny.
:P

The trick is always subtract - 60% drama from the-one's posts and you will get the true gist of it. He tends to get passionate you see. Wait till you see him defend Animes and JRPG's.

I thought about deformed Draenei and Nagrand when I saw it.

Though I did not hate it.

I didn't hate it, either.

I gave it a 6 out of 10 on IMDB, which really isn't a horrible rating at all.

It's just I continue to be amazed at how many people are treating seeing this film like it was some kind of awakening.

Well, to be fair, it was in how detailed and interesting the world was, including the 3D special effects. I honestly think there is more potential for the story then what we just saw.

Hehe, I just saw that while Stumbling too.
Not the most original plot granted but stil a very excellent movie IMO. Being an animation student, I was blown away by Avatar.

You do realize the Pochahontas parallels are completely intentional, right? The entire film is anti-imperialistic.

The movie is awesome B). I can see why people might not like it, but to hate it?  In my opinion that would mean either it's because said haters completely disagrees with the movie's anti-imperialism themes, or just want to convince themselves that they're 'different' and 'know better' then quite a large proportion of people that actually did enjoy the film.  :o

And how many people in this thread praised the movie for it's plot?  Or are we all in amazement at the jaw-dropping special effects such as the flora and fauna of Pandora, the epic battles, and the cool 3D effects.

YOU do realize that I posted that joke mock-up as a joke, right?

Avatar isn't anti-imperialistic in the least.  The humans weren't looking to colonize or control Pandora - they were looking to mine the mineral from that planet.  All signs in the film point to the company having spent ridiculous amounts of resources and time in trying to understand the natives and BUY/TRADE for the mineral.  This isn't me defending that company, really, it's me pointing out that the natives could have peacefully benefitted from trading with the company.  Would the company have exploited and dealth unfairly with the natives?  You can make a convincing argument for that.  Was the company at all justified in using that mercenary group to destroy the homes and cause the inadvertant but uncaring loss of life to obtain the resources?  Maybe on some small level if humanity was dying and needed it, but most likely there isn't any reasonable rational to support the behavior.

But anti-imperialism is against colonizing and expanding of borders.  A corporation with a private security force behaving badly on someone else's land cannot be imperialism becasue a corporation is not a country or government.

Definitions have meaning.

The movie is awesome - to you and people who enjoyed it. ^_^

I found it more enjoyable than Transformers, about as enjoyable as Live Free or Die Hard, and less enjoyable than District 9.

The movie is anti-corporate, anti-mercenary, pro-environment.  There is no "empire" for there to be "imperialism" unless now we count corporations as governments.

I don't base my enjoyment of movies on whether a large group of people like or dislike a film.  Why do so many people have to be dismissive of those who don't agree with them, especially on a matter of taste and opinion about something as arbitrary as liking a movie?

I loved Titantic even though it was hyped.
I found Avatar "meh" and it was hyped.
I disliked The Godfather and that is hyped.

I loved Superman Returns even though the average movie-goer found it "meh."
I found Jennifer's Body "meh" and the average movie-goer found it "meh."
I disliked X-Men The Last Stand even though the average movie-goer found it "meh.'

I could go through a list of movies that the average movie-goer hated that I loved, found "meh", or disliked, but I think I've illustrated my point that the whims of popular opinion have little sway on what I like or don't.

I like Harry Potter - very popular.  I like Repo: The Genetic Opera - not very popular.  Does't much matter to me whether others like them or not.

Again, I just wonder at if the people who marvel at Avatar saw the great achievements of Final Fantasy for CGI at its time, and if they found that pro-environment/anti-dictoral-violence story as hackneyed as Avatar or thought it as great a story and theme as they found Avatar.  If the people who found Avatar deep and moving, visually and storywise, thought Wall-E was stellar and deep or if they saw it as a family-friend, over-the-top anti-consumerism trite tale even if told in a cute way?

Maybe lost in all this, again, is that I enjoyed watching Avatar once.  But sort of in the way that I find Dollhouse, while good, not of Whedon quality - Avatar, while ok, is definitely not of Cameron quality.  IMO.
