So I don't like either Allistair, Sten or Ohgren particularly much, and it seems a 1h + shield warrior is pretty much easily done on auto, not requiring much management. I've previously played a mage with Morrigan, Wynne and Leliana (no AW/tank) on normal, which went alright most of the time (not sure how it would fare against the revenants in Brecilian Forest etc, but at least the one in Mage Tower was easily), pretty much consisting of Leliana dying quickly but everything else being managed by Aoe/loads of CC.

I'm aware that you can solo the game just with a dex rogue on nightmare etc, but I prefer not pausing all the time. I'm considering a str/dex build with a little will and con with a 2h warrior, which is my most likely choice. I'm just wondering if this is doable without a lot of effort, and where I should put my points. A lot of str and a little will (for modes) is obvious, but is dex a better choice than con for survival? Since I'll be using precise striking and having a lot of strength, hit chance shouldn't be an issue, and 2hs doesn't seem to get a damage bonus from dex, so it seems dex will only add  defense and nothing else useful. The party setup I'm thinking of is Morrigan with debuff line up to the always melee crit curse, up to mass paralysis, heal (regen, rejuv and mass rejuv seem of little importance), rune of paralysis, spirit healer line and up to crushing prison for more CC and armor penetration party buff. I'll probably have Leliana as a backstabber, not sure of whether I should have a dex or a cunning build, and finally Wynne with (all?) healing spells and some elemental stuff. Sound good?

Just be sure to get indomitable

Then either get a mage mana clash or be a templar and wear every crum of spell resistance equipment you can find to handle mage enemies

Honestly, I find 2h tanks are *better* than sword/shield tanks in the early game.

Stun + knockdown resistance is huge.

Sword/shield tanks only really shine once you have a good amount of Dex, Shield Wall + Shield Expertise, and a good shield.

Well, I think it'd definitely be possible with some crowd control. Make sure your mage has a tactic for casting Heroic Defense on your tank.

Your gear will be important though, moreso than on a s/s tank. Flemmeth should be easy with Wades superior Dragonbone armor, for example. Gaxkang and mages will be easy with Knight Commanders Plate + Spellward (70% magic resist total) with some Dwemer runes. Just be smart.

And spec Templar/Champion.
