Giving Alistair a new weapon

I've been trying to equip Alistair with a 2H Sword instead of sword/shield (when I first meet him in Ostagar). 

Directly changing his inventory didn't work. I also tried doing it through the same script that allows you to add items to your inventory (using CreateItemOnObject/GetObjectByTag instead of UT_AddItemToInventory) without any luck. 

It doesn't even add an item to his inventory let alone equip it. 

Just wondering what piece of the puzzle I'm missing here.

EDIT: if it matters, it's a non-custom item that I'm trying to give him.

Well, hate to necro my own thread but...



Decided to give the game another run and I am still interested in doing this if anyone has any input. :)

Can't say I have tried it for a companion, but I had problems with Arl Eamon hitting the achdemon with his fist after I restricted the family sword to the player character (Arl Eamon somehow wields the Cousland family sword in the final battle). I solved this by giving him another sword instead.

You can do this by editing his ressource file under creatures/_Global/Followers/gen00fl_alistair.
If can't see it, make sure you are in the single player module in the toolset, you may also need to download and use this (first file in the files tab).
