Yes, I know it's more about the enemies you'll face on the particular level, but even taking that on board as a variable, some sqaudmates must be inherently more suited to specific classes than others, right?

I mean I can't see myself using Grunt much. And Zaeed and Jacob are handy early on if you get them to Squad Disruptor Ammo and Squad Incendiary Ammo respectively until I can spare the points to get those myself, but do they still earn their place on the team afterwards?

I've just started my first soldier runthrough, and boy am I loving it. I just wanted to see who other soldier players typically went for as squadmates.

I find it depends on your playstyle.

I find that Grunt is terrible no matter what class you play as.

Like you say, Jacob is good for his Squad Incendiary Ammo until you get your own. As for ammo powers in general, the damage is based off of the base weapon damage (not total weapon damage) so the damage they provide is less than you might think. Cryo Ammo, Incendiary Ammo, and Disruptor Ammo are actually better for their crowd control aspects.

As a Soldier, I typically run with squadmates with good control-control abilities. Mordin (Cryo Blast), Jack/Jacob/Samara/Morinth (Pull field) are my favorites. But it also depends on how I build my Soldier. If I take Slam as a bonus power, then I want Miranda or Thane to set off Warp bombs

Fair points all, there.

I find I'm actually turning into quite the sniper soldier, if that makes much difference?

EDIT: and I went with Incendiary Grenades for a bonus power (not that I'm planning to use them much really. The base soldier powers seemed good enough for me).

Adrenaline Rush provides a hidden +100% damage bonus, +140% if you evolve to Heightened Adrenaline Rush. If you are sniping under Adrenaline Rush then you should be able to one-shot kill all basic enemies with the Mantis throughout most of the game. You can also choose the Widow later for a better one-shot sniper. If you use the Incisor or Viper, then you will be better use out of the crowd-control abilities of your ammo powers, particularly with the Viper.

Choose another bonus power than Inferno Grenades. It is one of the worst powers in the game, if not the worst. If you want a good 1-point bonus power, you are better off with Slam, Neural Shock, or Stasis.

Grunt and Zaeed are both amazing squadmates, but by bringing them along, your are bringing more durability and firepower which you already have.

Grunt is the tankiest person in the game and does great with a shotgun (not the GPS because I don't think he charges it) and free-reign to charge everything in sight.
Zaeed brings firepower and durability, but importantly, he brings squad disruptor ammo and incendiary grenade, which you already have.

As a soldier, you have the most consistent damage in the game and should have no problem killing enemies as they come at you, so look instead to bring crowd control effects instead of straight damage. What I always loved as a soldier was Jack's shockwave and Mordin's cryo-blast. Especially of note is Jack. She is the crowd control queen in this game and is really underrated. Shockwave is devastating against unprotected enemies, but still is the best stagger in the game. I think it's up every 12 or 16 seconds and if specced as wide shockwave can completely freeze the battlefield for 2 seconds while you get into position, take out priority targets, move from cover to cover, or whatever you need to do. It also pulls enemies out of cover. I honestly can go on about how I think Jack is the best squadmate in the game, but test her out... just don't give her a shotgun - there's no need for her to be in close range as she (obviously) lacks any damage mitigation... what with wearing only pants and a leather strap.

Thanks.

Just one more question - how do I equip squadmates with different weapons? It's seems pretty automatic as far as I can see. I mean at the start of missions and at weapon lockers I can choose WHICH shotgun to give Jack, but how do I take away her shotgun altogether and give her something else?

At any time during a mission, you can pause the action and change which weapon your squadmate is using. In the case of Jack, you can switch between her pistol and shotgun. On Xbox, hold Left Bumper to bring up the Weapon wheel; on PS3 it's L1 or L2. On PC I think you hit the tactical pause key and roll your mouse over your squadmate's weapon to change it.

You cannot change which weapon categories your squadmates use. For example, for Jack you cannot change shotgun-pistols for SMGs-Sniper rifles. Squadmates are hard-coded to use specific weapon categories.

I just saw your Shockwave Adept vids. So cool.

Have you tried a Shockwave Adept in ME3? Tons of fun. I take the Evi or Talon in SP, mostly the Evi in MP since the Talon is too heavy for me. Soooo awesome.

Not yet, but I will at some point. Also, credit goes to you for showing me how fun and useful Shockwave could be in Mass Effect 2.
