All we have is guesswork. I think they ultimately decided that the ME2 cast wasn't where the money was at.
This is just my opinion but I think we would all be surprised by the amount of data EA collects, they know. Also, I think they suck at analyzing the more finer points of that data but one would think figuring out the most popular characters would not be one of those points.

Not a fan overall.
I didn't make it, I just found it & thought it'd be cool to share.
As for the Krogan thing, it'd be similar to what happens to Tali if you side with the Geth only. The Krogan squadmate would be killed.
& if it was up to me, I WOULD have Javik.
As for Thane, Legion & Mordin...I think they should have lived if you did certain things right. Do something right & Thane gets a lung transplant/doesn't get stabbed by Kai Leng, do something right & Mordin doesn't have to sacrifice himself, same for Legion.

Besides that the problem with ME2 people is that any of them can die in that game..... ME2 offered some amount of decisions/consequences regarding squadmates.... and now that's the price to pay

If you have the Doctor on your side, what would be the purpose with the rest of the characters?

I can't see Aria working as squadmate, she has almost no emotional vinculation with anyone, better Liara.

If you weren't a good Commander you should get punished, it's that simple.

Having legion in your squad for atleast part of the journey surely would of made his death more heartbreaking?

No. Tali & Garrus are not necessary to be squadmates for the 3rd time while other characters don't even get a chance to be in the squad twice
Seriously? Playing Mass Effect without Garrus and Liara? They are the most useful squadmates in the whole in my opinion.

Alot of people seem to be disappointed with the squad selection in ME3, paritcularly the lack of ME2 characters. So how about this squad? Add in Liara, Vega & Javik & I think it'd be perfect. Though, I say replace Wrex with Grunt. Wrex is awesome, but's the leader of the Krogan, he can't be messing around with Shepard when he has a people to lead into battle.
Wrex, Mordin, Aria (no thanks), Thane (how could you include him?! He's dying!), and Jack are a little busy. Besides, you've got too many squaddies. ME2 had way too many people IMO. I liked that ME3 had a smaller crew.
What I really wanted was the opportunity to tell some of my crew to go be with their people instead of pal around with me.
I'd have told Tali to be with the quarians because obviously they can't be trusted to keep their damn word. I'd send Liara off to the Crucible. She'd probably at least be able to... I don't know... be the Shadow Broker there or something because she sure wasn't being a Shadow Broker on my ship.
That would have left me with Garrus, Vega, EDI, and Kaidan. I would have been fine with that. Just add some more side missions with some past ME2 crew members where they're actually on my team, and I'd be good to go.

I like that Bioware reunited your old ME1 squad (minus Wrex) for ME3.
If we had 9 squadmates in ME3 instead of 7, these would be my picks:
- Garrus
- Liara
- Tali
- Ashley or Kaidan
- Grunt
- Javik
- Vega
- Thane (less sickly, though he'd still die during the coup)
- A Batarian squaddie
