I have a system in place on the Jabberwocky OM that spawns immobile neutral NPCs that are posing as placeables.  This is done by a custom VFX using the placeable model that is then placed on a special NPC that is spawned onto the OM.  This system is being used in place of the SoZ Goodie system, as that system is a mess and doesn't allow the customization I can do with this current system.

I'm going to need a bunch of ideas for these special encounter objects so I'm turing to the community for ideas.  As an example here is my current test goodie:  The Abandoned Chest

The player can find the chest randomly on the OM.  Clicking on it will bring up the encounter dialogue.  In this dialogue, the player can search the chest, which checks skills to see if they avoid any traps and if successful, they recieve some gold.  Then chest then disappears.

As you can see these encounters are relatively simple and involve speaking to a placeable "creature" on the OM.  These placeables can be made to use any model in the game that can be used on a VFX.  For example, for the chest, I'm using the OM Goodie Chest as the model.  Since most of the encounter is handled through a dialogue, there is a lot of scripting that can happen, so it opens wide the possibilities.

At any rate, if you are interested, list some ideas of "encounters" that you would like to see.  If you have a placeable model in mind, please list that also.  Remember that these are not really combat encounters and are meant to be closer to the Goodie system from SoZ.  Level range for Jabberwocky is between 8-10.

The Grumpy Strumming Pets: a band of bards whose members are intelligent animals of normal pet species. They are always upset about something, thus the "Grumpy" part of their name. Maybe they're upset about the poor state of their instruments and send the player to find them some better ones.

Scrolls with sections of text from other Lewis Caroll works. Perhaps as a collection quest if you assemble one or several complete "works".

Since you're using NPCs disguised as placeables, I think you should make buildings that move whenever the player isn't looking (i.e. set a trigger/AOE wide around the NPC, and use the on-enter and on-exit to start and stop the walking).

Or maybe a tree that follows the PC around, or a town that you have to sneak up on or it'll run away.

You could use the small building placable and allow the player to "stay" there and gain a safe rest spot.

You are assuming of course that I want the player to survive...I'll put this in the maybe pile.

Since this is Lewis Carroll, I guess you're looking for uniquely odd stuff? Hmm...

How about the talking stump of a magical tree that was felled some time in the past? It has gone completely balmy and so talks in riddles. However, when the riddles are successfully answered, it grants the character a magic apple.

Standing on a low mound is a stack of huge boulders that seem precariously balanced. The player may attempt to knock them over, but this will fail and attempting to do so will anger the elements. (Maybe a penalty to saves vs. acid, cold, fire, lightning and sonic.)

A broken mirror. There is no indication of how it got there or why. Runic characters along the frame read something like, "Seek not the darkness that lies hidden within". Attempting to destroy it causes temporary blindness. Repairing it requires casting multiple light spells, with each spell repairing it a little more. Once the mirror is fully healed, it releases whatever is held inside.

There's a wide, basalt boulder with only the top surface showing. The surrounding ground is darkened and charred. For some reason it is raining heavily only around this rock. (Multiple heavy rain placed effects.) Every so often a bolt of lightning strikes it. Casting a sunburst spell (possibly from a scroll found elsewhere) will briefly cause the rain to stop. The stone elemental (gnome) that was trapped inside will reward the player with a precious gem then flee the area.

A broken bed is lying out in the middle of the wilderness, surrounded by shrubs. How did it get here? It smells of rose petals and myrhh. There's a mysterious green stain right in the middle of the sheets. It is surrounded by many tiny humanoid footprints.

On a flat piece of ground the player finds several piles of oversized playing cards (scaled up from the normal size). They are of exceptional quality. A search of the ground reveals two blankets; one white and one black. Both are rumpled and clearly show use by two large figures. A clever player may deduce that this was a game of strip poker played by animated playing cards.

Regards,

I'm curious how one would create a rainbow in the game? Perhaps through a repeatedly cycling visual effect? Or maybe the lantern archon visual effect, which is kind of rainbow-ish?

Blood stains and charred earth all over the place. Perched happily in the middle is a bunny chewing grass. Or is it...?

A summoning circle, or similar. Pass some magic skill check(s) and gain an item to summon some creature. Fail and said creature will attack you instead.

A cursed item. Roll some check to see if you notice the curse or not. After that, you can keep and use it, throw it away, maybe give it to someone you want to be cursed (maybe for some quest)...

Similarly, a corpse of a member of some faction with some valuable item on it. Return the item to the faction for some reward (or not). Keep the item for yourself and the faction may attack you later on.

The Tarrasque?

An axe is stuck in a large log. Attempts by the party leader to remove it prove futile, but one of the other members of the group is able to extract it. Unfortunately, this attracts the attention of a Dryad who accuses the party of slaying her sister's home tree. Unless the party can convince her otherwise, she summons forth her treant friends to help defend her forest.

You find some rare plant. If you fail a survival check, you get poisoned (or you just destroy the plant). If you pass it, you can extract stuffs to create potions, poison or whatever. A Craft Alchemy check may also fit somewhere.
