I'd like to patch my game, but after reading about all the problems people are having with patches and DLC, I've been hesitant about installing any patches. So far, I've been playing with the original Collectors Edition disk (no patches) plus I purchased the Warden's Keep DLC.

I have a few questions if I install the latest patch (v1.02A).
  • Will installing the patch invalidate my current saved games?
  • Will I still have access to the CE and DLC that I've purchased?
  • What are people's experience with installing this patch (especially on XP Pro)?
I was wondering if these issues have been solved with the current patch?

Thanks

In other posts of the patch 1.02a, people seem to have item disappearing issues. Though it fixes several bugs, it may have caused a few more as well.

For your questions, the patch 1.02a should not invalidate your save games. However, I believe that the new patch will work properly on a new character save game created after the update, as bugs seemed to be fixed by that. So if you have your old save games from the v1.00, it is not recommended to update yet, since bugs are most likely to occur.

You should still have access to CE and DLC, though I don't trust this patch anyway.

My recommendation: enjoy and finish the game before doing patching so you can play it without more bugs than the very few it currently has.

I've had no problems loading a 1.00 saved game in 1.02 (tested it just now from a clean 1.00 install and transferred my game to a 1.02 system). The people who've had items disappearing have had unauthorized DLC (which removes all DLC items that are unauthorized). I believe this is the result of needing to reauthenticate DLC after installing the patch, and it does also seem to require a manual login (auto-login sometimes fails despite saying you're logged in).

So do you have to reauthenticate the DLC everytime you apply a new patch?

No, its pretty straight forward installation. Although I've been crashing a lot since 1.02a.

I would suspect so as that might be an anti-piracy system of some kind. The DLC will unauthenticate if the game disconnects from the EA server during the authentication attempt. I, personally, play logged in 100% of my non-troubleshooting time and haven't ever had any DLC issues of any kind.

Is your crashing in game or at loading? Did you experience crashes when you first installed the game?

DLC does work offline in my install. I only logged in to redeem the downloads and that was it. Unless, it changed in the new patch that I haven't applied yet.

Random CTDs AFTER LOADING DENERIM, its not consistent but most of my crashes have to be because of Denerim. It gets really slow too after you visited Denerim and gone to other places. In my experience instead of playing an hour without slowdowns, it is cut in half after you have gone to Denerim.

Yesterday I didn't go to Denerim and not a single slowdown and CTD happened.

I works perfectly fine when played offline. I logged in once or thrice when I downloaded the DLCs and never played online since then.

I agree with Titius ^ Denerim makes me slow down especially at the gates when leaving the market. I didn't have any crash issues until the patch as well. I dislike the nerfs they did to spells also. Pretty much every line of spells I invested in was gimped and now my mage is mostly useless. I used ice based spells and crowd control type spells to control the battlefield but now with the extremely short durations they are all but useless.

Haven't done denerim yet. Is the slowdowns due to the game using most of the memory and cpu resources?

It appears to be a memory leak like they had in NWN 2 when it first came out. The longer you play the worse it gets.

hmm, can someone tell me if there are any significant differences between 1.02 patch that was released on the 8th and 1.02a released on 17th ? The patch notes look the same to me. I havent had any trouble with crashes or anything since I patch 1.02... seems people are having some more issues with this one ?

I went from 1.00 to 1.02a, and now I can't start the game. Like, the launcher will load, but the "Play" button won't do anything, and when I try to open the actual daorigins.exe, I get the following message.

C:\\Program Files\\Dragon Age\\bin_ship\\daorigins.exe

The application failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail

Before I patched it the game ran smoothly. Any help?
