LOL If we really are talking about every VG in history, then the worst must be Tekken.

"YOU LOOSE" with a cut scene of you crying!

I think there have been worse endings, but this new invention called "the internet" gives people a channel to voice their displeasure more vocally. So I think ME3 definately has to date gotten most vocal feedback about it's ending and the vocal feedback has had a lot of influence on stuff (game prize, charity-events, EC-DLC).

From the top of my head I'd rank these as challenging bad endings:

- Monkey Island 2 (I know I'll receive hate for this)
- Ultima 9
- The Longest Jorney: Dreamfall

I remember during the C64, Amiga, NES and SNES/Genesis days most of the endings were disappointing. Very often all we got was a "The End" screen and when there was an ending, it was nowhere as awesome as we hoped for.

Hell, even Mortal Kombat 9's grimdark ending was more enjoyable than the ME3 ending, imo. And this is a fighting game.

Your just figuring that out? :P

This place is full of them. It's why I rarely come here that often these days. In response to the thread itself the actual answer is no, not even close to the worst. People who think it is the worst have clearly not played many games in their lives or being melodramatic.

Nope, there were far worse endings out there. The only difference is that those didn't cause this big of a ****storm because their audiences weren't as big or dedicated.

I agree with this - the scope of the outrage is proportional to the size of the fanbase and the amount of passion they had/have for the franchise.

Mass Effect's ending will be remember for a very, very long time, that is for sure, and not for good reasons.

The extended cut, as expected, did little to change that (although it admittedly captured a few people back).

I would say the nerdrage may have been the greatest of all time. I loved the ending!

I could hold out Infamous 2 or Chrono Cross, but not everyone would agree with me on those. Instead, let me tell you about a little game called Final Fantasy Adventure for the Game Boy. In this game, your hero falls in love with a girl who happens to be the last in a line of people who can commit seppuku and become a tree that prevents all war everywhere for as long as that tree stands. Naturally, she gets kidnapped by the Big Bad, who proceeds to wage war everywhere despite the fact that there is a peace tree standing. After a long series of battles, the hero defeats the Big Bad and saves the girl, but in so doing the current peace tree is destroyed. Naturally, ignoring the fact that the peace tree's peace powers have been proven suspect, your girlfriend commits seppuku and becomes a new peace tree right before your very eyes, again ignoring the fact that there is now no one left to make any new trees should something happen to this one. The End.

Hmmm... I'd say obscure JRPGs are hardly more notoriously bad than ME3. Besides, out of control weirdness is basically a genre requirement there.

Fair enough, though there was once a time when "RPG videogame" was synonymous with JRPG (it was a dark era in our history).

...

So how about the Dark Side endings to either of The Force Unleashed videogames?

ME3's original ending was bad, but not the worse i've eveer seen. It was average, just amazingly average and lacked a lot of closure that one would expect. That was the problem to me, thankfully EC solved a LOT of my unresolved issues. not all, but a lot.

ME3 did not have the worse ending in VG by far, it only had a lot of outcry as other have stated due to the passion of us fans (and thats a good and bad thing at times... BSN CAN be a cesspool at times).

But as with anything in the videogame community, most of the outcry has died down to dull roar and most will forget about it within months. Hell its barely even reported on anymore as nowadays its business as usual.

but to the dedicated fans, it will be remembered, good or bad, but it'll be perceived differently by each person, because lets face it... the only people who knew or cared about the outrage (or mock outrage) were those that were at all interested in ME3 or the ME series in the first place

Has no one here ever played E.T. on the old Atari console? That game, and it's ending, was so bad that all remaining unsold copies were buried in a mass grave. Doesn't get much worse than that.

I don't think in the modern (internet) age there has been a video game **** storm of comparable size ... DA2 was bad, ME3 was worse.

I don't think it will be rivalled any time soon either. Really ME3 was the perfect storm, a very popular franchise with a complete lack of writer supervision by anyone with even a modicum of business sense ... the important thing to know about writers is that tend to be ****s with massive egos, as such they will generally chose endings which allow no sequels ... because they're done with it, anyone else touching it would only soil it and bad endings are more artistic.

The ME3 ending has destroyed 10s of millions worth of good will for EA and Bioware. Even though Bioware closed the ranks to support Mac&Casey and EA couldn't or wouldn't ram through the sensible solution this time, they will have learned a lesson here ... as will other publishers.

Most well known? Depends. No, I don't mean "irrespective of standards set by the technology and expectations at the time", since that would make any game pre-millenium a good candidate.

By the general public and not hard core gamers? Maybe. But ME3 is so recent that it's top of mind right now and the series popularity made it newsworthy.

But independent of "well known" or "notorius" I would argue there are plenty of other games far more deserving of "worst game ending" award.

Halo 2's ending was a cliffhanger. It didn't flat out suck.

Well, I think Halo 2 was more foregiving of a cliffhanger, since it didn't suck and that it probably confirmed that there was going to be another Halo game.

I think Trilogy wise, Mass Effect 3 had the most "well known" bad ending in VG history as I don't know of another other trilogys that disappointed me as much as ME3 did.

I'd have say "yes, it is the most notorious" to the original ending. I've never seen such an outcry over a game but, it was as if someone had completely forgotten they were working on a product for adults and adults think "logistics."
I'd also say, I thought the response could have been better.

The EC endings were a much needed improvement. I did notice something familiar though, it was not presented exactly as was expected.
