Does Mass Effect 3 have the most "well known" bad ending in VG history?

Halo 2

KOTOR 2

Original Neverwinter Nights 2 (before Mask of the Betrayer, which - and I want to be clear here - redeemed every last bit of NWN2 and more)

Final Fantasy 13

Fallout 3

Metal Gear Solid 2

I could go on, if you want me to.

I didn't mind Halo 2's ending though.

I just thought of one that had an even worse ending than ME3. Force Unleashed 2

Just checking if you read the OP. I'm asking if you think ME3 is the most notorious bad ending, not if it's the worst ending.

If you had read my previous post before that one, you would have seen that I already answered it.

I saw it, but it looked like you were talking about the ending itself.

What? This thread is about the ending itself. You asked if we thought ME3 has the worst ending in VG history. I said "probably not".

No I didn't.  I asked if it's the most notoriously bad ending, not if it's the worst. Meaning if it's the most infamous and well known.

Pretty much.

Not really sure why you had to ask.

Halo 2 wasn't nearly as bad.  Yeah, it was abrupt, but it was the middle installment.  You knew more was coming.

And Fallout 3's ending DID get changed when they released Broken Steel.  (So yes Bioware, it IS possible to change your "artistic integrity" and still make a great game.)

It's bad, but to this day I think it's MGS2, because NOTHING, and I mean nothing makes even remotely sense, even in-universe. Even Kojima admitted he made a mistake.

That's exactly why I didn't mind it.

It probably got the most press. I can't say the worst though as there's a lot of video games that I haven't played. As far as video games I have played though, yes in my experience ME3 had the worst ending.

MGS2 has to take the gold for me on this one. I'm still trying to figure out what the bloody hell that was all about. Was Raiden eating the bad cheese or somthing? I've not played 4 so I don't know if it offerd any insight on the Patriots.

Biggest hoopla that's for sure. Doesn't mean it's the worst ever, but it does show a ton of fans actually cared how it ended.

This is what made that ending awesome.  It was nothing but consistent crazy-sauce that wrote them into the most amazing corners ever.

Looking back, it was brilliant.  At the time I was enraged.

Plenty of games have had endings far worse. Fable 2, for instance? It's just that those games weren't worth caring about, and Mass Effect is. Of course, those games almost always had a beginning and middle just as bad as the ending, so I'm not sure if it counts.

Borderlands. Brink, if you can consider that piece of crap a 'game.' New Vegas' ending was pretty bad I thought, but not so much because of the story but because of the god awful final mission that took three minutes to load. Halo 3 had a stupid ending, but then again I thought the entire plot was stupid.

The original ending was pretty bad true, but I don't think its as bad as how the fandom or the press made it out to be and they did change it which the only other game I can think of that did that was Fallout 3. I can actually think of 10 worse videogame endings than Mass Effect 3.

Bioshock's ending was pretty apalling. Unlike Mass Effect 3, it had been getting pretty bad throughout the last half an hour or so, not the last five minutes.

Fallout 3 was terrible, Halo 2, Metal Gear Solid 2, Half Life, Deus Ex Human Revolution, Borderlands, the list goes on. Mass Effect 3's ending may have been bad, but it's not the worst of it's kind, nor is it particularly unique.

I can think of two recent games that remind me of my experience with ME3, that is, a great game, but odd, out-of-place ending:
  • Borderlands: LOVE this game (400+ hours), but ending has to be one of the lamest boss battles ever.  Cue cursing at monitor asking 'WTF?'.
  • Rage: A lot of wasted potential and too short. Abrupt, lame ending which is literally an elevator ride to a room to press a button. Cue 60-second outro video which leaves a bunch of unanswered questions.
Cue cursing at monitor asking 'WTF?'.

Definitely the most notoriously bad ending. I think it got the most media coverage by several orders of magnitude. While there's probably some non-AAA title written by a mentally disabled janitor somewhere that has a worse ending, ME3 has the worst ending of any game I've played in the last 20 years.

Have played KOTOR2.  Ending was choppy and abrupt.  Clearly unfinished

Still better than ME3's

Yep, Halo 2's was fine and offered a great story hook for Halo 3. Never understood the hate, really.

Your kidding, right? I almost threw a controller. Then I found out the original ending was cut because of time and budget. If BSN existed then and were Halo fans, we would still be hearing about it.

Yeah, if you want to talk about a sequel betraying a franchise... Look no further. Though this game was so bland I can't even remember anything about it other than that you play as a clone, Boba Fett is there, and the entire game is "me must find me girlfriend."

Edit: To answer the question, I think the EC made it a good enough ending that it can't be called "bad" (though this is an extremely relative term). Unfortunately, public outcry created such a massive s***storm that it will always be remembered for the fans who hated its ending.

I don't think it was the worst ending ever, but it isn't the greatest. I've played plenty of other games with worse endings than Mass Effect 3. One that will always stick in my mind is RAGE.

Mass Effect 3's ending is worse by a long shot. KotOR 2's ending is cliffhanger but it doesn't suffer from incoherence and faulty logic.

Whether Mass Effect 3 has the most notoriously bad ending? Yeah it definitely stands out, even compared to the reception of other games whose endings were notorious for being bad. Mass Effect 3 must also be one of the few games in video game history where the developers have scrambled to release extra content just a couple of months after the release of the game to modify the ending of it.

I'd say Halo 2, but Halo 2 didn't have an ending. So I'll go with Diablo, Assassin's Creed, Alan Wake, Fable, Final Fantasy 10, Final Fantasy 13, Final Fantasy 8, Final Fantasy 1, Doom, Bat Man: Arkham Asylum, Crysis... Even games like
God of War 2 was plot holerific and Bioshock had an ending at odds with the horror nature of most of the game.

Then there's the vast majority of games in the 80's and early 90's that just had a 'the end'.
