Does Mass Effect 3 have the most "well known" bad ending in VG history?

Ill say me3 was memorable as they would like it to be... Unfortunately its memorable as one of the most horribly executed endings of a trilogy. Thats how this trilogy will be known for... Its sad really since the trilogy was amazing untill the end. Nobody cares now, its all about the ending.

Or maybe we loved the game and series so much we believe it deserved to be treated better at the end.

Worst? No. Worst ending for an outstanding series? Probably.

Yes, no-one wants fans who aren't easily fobbed off with rubbish. The best fans to have are the ones who'll lap up every scrap thrown at them so you don't need to bother with quality. Besides, it's already been pointed out several times that it's the contrast to the rest of the quality that makes it so much worse than bad endings on bad or mediocre games, even if those other ones are worse when taken in isolation. Whether that stacks up to worst or not I can't say, I've not played too many other modern games ("modern" to me being anything post 8 bit era).

I can think of worse endings but the "notorious" bit screws that over

I can think of two recent games that remind me of my experience with ME3, that is, a great game, but odd, out-of-place ending:

  • Borderlands: LOVE this game (400+ hours), but ending has to be one of the lamest boss battles ever.  Cue cursing at monitor asking 'WTF?'.Rage: A lot of wasted potential and too short. Abrupt, lame ending which is literally an elevator ride to a room to press a button. Cue 60-second outro video which leaves a bunch of unanswered questions.
Cue cursing at monitor asking 'WTF?'.

Yeah lol, those two games. I remember wondering why RAGE is named, well RAGE. I found out at the end.

This must be so called tough love, since you guys have been constantly beating the game for 5 months now.

I think it's unquestionably the most controversial ending in video game history. Nothing has EVER had the uproar that this did. I can't think of any other entertainment medium that had something this controversial.

Not the game, the ending, big difference.  It kind of bemuses me that some ppl can't grasp that distinction.

Well, OK, the face import issue as well...

Or "the ending is only a small part of the total" as if you can just sum up good minutes vs. bad minutes and totally ignore the impact any particular event has throughout a story.

I hated KOTOR II's ending immensely. It was far too abrupt, and just felt like a hollow victory. I think it would be the absolute top of the notoriously bad endings list had there not been so many of us convincing ourselves that there'd be a third game that would make up for it. had we been told back then that there wouldn't be, the rage would still be heard all over.
As it stands we've one-by-one slowely accepted that it's not going to happen, and with TOR being out, there's really not going to be any great desire from anyone to reward the players that went through the KOTOR games (and from what I understand, TOR has now completely annihilated the character of Revan as anything remotely ambiguous, and has sent him to loony-ville).

ME3 though, I think will, by virtue of being the most recent, and being the last game in a trilogy, be recognised as the most notoriously bad ending to a game/series.
If MGS 2, Halo 2, KOTOR II, every other game that was supposed to have a sequel, didn't and so ended on an awful cliff-hanger (Bulletstorm, Dreamfall, the fourth Broken Sword game - Angel of Death) -and- ME3 were all released in the same year... I think the computer games industry would collapse.

I'm not sure Broken Sword 4 was ever going to get a sequel but its ending is so poor.

Thing is though, ME 3 is the only one I've actually been unable to return to. I played through KOTOR II countless times despite the ending (again maybe because I thought they might release a patch or news on a sequel, and so still had something invested in it), whereas I only barely managed to drag myself through the final sections of ME 3 to see the EC.

It's possible the worst ending of VG history. It's 'the worst' ending because it didnt just screw ME3, it screwed all franchise. It's radius is much more bigger than the given examples.

Halo2 may have bad ending but Halo3 and Halo4 came after it. Because of that you can still play Halo1 and 2.

Borderlands may have bad ending following by bad outro, however it wasnt a 'blockade' for Borderlands 2.

Rage may have bad ending (it has a bad ending i agree) but it's not a reason not to play again, considering they want to turn it to franchise.

So yeah, ME3 has one of the worst ending of video gaming history.

People disliking a bad ending doesn't mean the fanbase is bad, it means they're smart.

It has the worst ending in entertainment history with regards to something that people actually thought would be good. Yea, Plan 9 from Outer space and Custer's Revenge were worse but no one expected those to be amazing.

It does not mean that either. It is just people in the fanbase did not like it. Opinions and preferences do not equal intelligence in this speaking. All it does is continue to spew either side of opposition to sling mud from one side to the other ad infinitum.

No, it doesn't. It has the most notorious butthurt in history.

RAGE, Prince of Persia(2008 Artsy Version), etc. would be more appropriate choices for the worst endings in history.

I wanted to ask this question months ago, but I felt i should wait for the dust to settle first. Since it's August, I feel most people can give an opinion on it without being too bias.

First off I don't want you to get this confused with me asking if it's THE WORST ending of all time. That there is easily up for debate, and honestly the worst ending of all time is completely subjective to the player. However the most notoriously bad ending is another story. There's bad endings out there, and some have stired controversy. But I don't think there's a VG ending in history that spawned as much heavy long term rage and controversy amongst the video game community. And maybe for that reason, Mass Effect 3 will likely be the most memorable bad ending in years to come, until something else tops it.

No. Fallout 3. KOTOR 2's ending was literally missing, as some modders discovered, and then there's Drakengard, which probably takes the cake for having the worst and strangest ending I've ever seen in a Square-Enix game.

Anything EA has done to Bioware -- and by relation the ending to ME3 -- is nothing compared to the horrific trainwreck EA did to the Ultima franchise.

Imagine the level of betrayal perceived in ME3 in relation to ME1 and ME2, and multiply x100. That is the level of wrong with Ultima IX: Ascension.

Smart? Really? So it's smart to hate like most of them did? To almost threaten to bring down Bioware?

Smart isn't the most important thing, it was how the hate was shown. That's the problem of peoeple, not just gamers these days: They  think thay they're the most important a**** in the world, and they're not. It's fine to dislike it, just don't act like most did.

If they would have been calm, things might not be like they are now. but noooooooooo.

If the internet was bigger at the time. I assume Final Fantasy 7's ending would have destroyed the internet.

I haven't exactly played every game out there, but..

Worst ending of any game I've ever played. Not to mention that they overhyped it before hand and just couldn't deliver. Then they should've come clean. In hindsight, I would've waited for a price drop and picked it up later, instead of shelling out on a collector's edition..

I had hoped they'd fix it with EC, but they've made it worse as far as I am concerned.
