Does Mass Effect 3 have the most "well known" bad ending in VG history?

A deep ending yes. Or just a really bad one.

If it was just "really bad" people would have dismissed it and moved on. Not debating it, forming factions, etc. for months afterward. (And I haven't even started on what the IT folks are doing - that thread scares me sometimes.)

it's "really bad" alright. compared to some of the other game endings out there this would be like "meh" but this is the ending to the mighty mass effect, and the story telling quality of the rest of the trilogy and the quality of the last 10 minutes... it's night and day. the game just goes full retard in the last 10 minutes and that sir is a lasting impression, particularly if it represents the culmination of over 100 hours of gameplay.

Oh and Alan Wake too. I have no idea what the hell happened.

What? No, Alan Wake was great. If you want some explanation: www.youtube.com/watch

Thanks for the link! Now I understand it much better. I didn't play the DLC...maybe I should have...

Maybe me3 just had the worst fans. I didnt find me3 ending particularly bad, when compared to some other endings.

Well a ending is the hardest part of a story to get right... Well for some people. When I used to write fan fictions the beginning was the hardest part for me, but a lot of people have difficulty with the end. It comes from the inability to easily see where the draw the line to prevent from continuing on for infinity because without a ending that's usually what will happen. And then there's the problem of wrapping up the canon by answering all those nagging questions.

Nothing wrong with going on forever--if done correctly. Warhammer 40k has somehow pulled this off stunningly. Constant state of war for 10,000+ years, yet little to no change in the status quo. Amazing. And yet I keep coming back for more.

And yet many of the fans of 40K either want them to continue to develop the plot or end it.

And to be honest 40K no longer is story driven hence why they can get away with it. MMOs are not story driven for the most part hence why they get away with it. Mass Effect 3 and most retail games are story driven and people do not want a endless plot.

Just checking if you read the OP. I'm asking if you think ME3 is the most notorious bad ending, not if it's the worst ending.

I thought the ending was passable for a shooter, kind of similar to Spec Ops: The Line. The game itself is painfully tedious.  Borderlands. Now that is an abominable ending even for light-on-story shooter standards. Anti-climatic to the extreme, it doesn't even deserve to be called an ending.

Yeah, I really didn't get that one. [Spoilers if anyone cares] So the guy I've been chasing is actually trying to help people? While also providing guns to the civil war? And all those friends who I saw die and had their bodies thrown in a heap are alive? And betraying for no good reason? WHAT!? [/Spoilers]

I think plenty of games have had worse endings than Mass Effect 3. Silent Hill Homecoming, Fable 2, Fable 3, MGS 2, I'd argue LA Noire and all those old NES(etc) games where no effort was put in. But the Mass Effect 3 ending experience was the worst I can think of. I can't think of any other game/series I was invested in that built up so much and fell so far. ME 1, 2 and most of 3 are the reason it ranks up there with those others.

And I can't think of any other that cause such a stir. Most are quickly forgotten, but people will remember this fiasco for a while.

I was referring to the END of Far Cry 2....................not the entire game.

I won't spoil it for potential suckers, but I absolutely abhorred it, And I'm not the least bit religious.

the worst and most depressing ending I have ever had to endure also the only end that killed an entire franchise at lest for me so I'd say yes.

I really can't help but wonder if the controversy just seems bigger since we're here everyday or if it's really that big of a controversy. I haven't really seen it covered in major news outlets or anything. Maybe us fans have just been overexposed.

I stopped reading at LA Noire.
That ending was right for Cole.

As a stand alone game, I wouldn't say it was the worst one I've played. But as the ending installment of a trilogy, it was the ****tiest thing I've ever seen. They complete went from the original feel to an over-polished attempt at cashing in on the success of the previous installments.

Graphically it was better, the combat was more intense, the starting atmosphere was right... but storywise it was breaking the lore at so many points, the logic was completely flawed and they truly, truly broke the backbone of the series by introducing the catalyst and tying it up with a stolen ending mechanic from Hudson's fave game. It was a crash and burn right before the finish.

The quality of experience and the length of playthrough were just sub par. The game just wasn't finished, they hurriedly came up with an ending solution, and away went the copies to the stores - and while the fans we're gaming towards their greatest disappointment, EA was celebrating that they could rake in the heap of pre-order gold just before the end of the fiscal year.

I don't think my problems with it are what you think they are. To keep it short and spoiler free, I felt they tried to cram too much into to little time as the ending approached. It left me very disappointed. Not really a "bad ending", but one of the more disappointing experiences, due to the "end game". Wasn't really fair to list it with the others.

I would say ME3 had the worst if for no other reason than BW's stance and attitude on it. When fans complained to Bethesda that Fallout 3's ending was terrible they didn't scream it was art. They released a whole new expansion to fix it.

It's the worst one I ever encountered (as far as I remember) in any kind of media, be it book, film or video game. There might be something worse out there, but I don't think I came across it.

You people must have not been playing games for very long. I can think of many older games with terrible endings.

When I see the Devs defending the ending saying it was good, I can only think of three things:

1. They love their job and don't want to lose it. (Most likely scenario)
2. They're in HARDCORE denial. (Can be combined with the 1st)
3. They're Coo Coo for Cocoa Puffs.
