Yes. Mass Effect 3 is the worst ending in all of the VG this year in 2012.

Maybe they should make a dlc for dragon balls, so you can go around the 3 horrid endings and just wish for a decent end to an amazing game.

I don't know. Previous examples that come to mind (Halo 2, Metal Gear Solid 2, Final Fantasy 7) all happened before the social network apocalypse. If those games came out today the backlash probably would have spread like wildfire.

I mean, when you think of it, FF7 and ME3 kinda had the same ending feeling. "WTF did the world just get destroyed? What happened to my party? What about Cloud and Tifaaaaaa?!"

In VG history?

Seriously?

No.

HELL NO.

I could hold out Infamous 2 or Chrono Cross, but not everyone would agree with me on those. Instead, let me tell you about a little game called Final Fantasy Adventure for the Game Boy. In this game, your hero falls in love with a girl who happens to be the last in a line of people who can commit seppuku and become a tree that prevents all war everywhere for as long as that tree stands. Naturally, she gets kidnapped by the Big Bad, who proceeds to wage war everywhere despite the fact that there is a peace tree standing. After a long series of battles, the hero defeats the Big Bad and saves the girl, but in so doing the current peace tree is destroyed. Naturally, ignoring the fact that the peace tree's peace powers have been proven suspect, your girlfriend commits seppuku and becomes a new peace tree right before your very eyes, again ignoring the fact that there is now no one left to make any new trees should something happen to this one. The End.

*shudder*

Hmmm... I'd say obscure JRPGs are hardly more notoriously bad than ME3. Besides, out of control weirdness is basically a genre requirement there.

Have you kids ever played KOTOR 2? Cuz if you have, then you'd know the undisputed worst ending to a videogame ever.

Please, don't remind me of that horror. Actually, now that I think on it, I wonder if Bioware is planning on a repeat. In KOTOR2 we're basically told that the protagonist of both KOTOR 1 and 2 just disappear and that's it. Then they show up as NPC's in SW:TOR, which actually bugs me a lot, because it means that Bioware just steals "my" characters and use them as they please. Now if you read the endings of DAO Awakening and DA2 carefully, you'll find that both the Warden and Hawke again disappear mysteriously. If they're going to turn my Dragon Age charcters into NPC's in Dragon Age 3 or some later installment and turn them into something else than how I played them, I'll be very pissed.

Special honorary mention to Nier. In that game, if you make repeated playthroughs, you can unlock a final ending that erases your character, and all save files, permanently, as an intended feature...

Well, Obsidian basically apologized for KoTOR2 ending the way it did, they pointed out this had a lot to do with the release schedule of one G. Lucas, who had an actual Star Wars movie coming out shortly after the KoTOR2 release.

And disappointing as the ending was, is anybody really going to come out and say it rewrote the natural laws underlying the universe and made content that takes place after it pretty much impossible to write? Yeah, until you're prepared to argue that, ME3 is the reigning champion. KoTOR2 doesn't even play in the same league.

Nope, there were far worse endings out there. The only difference is that those didn't cause this big of a ****storm because their audiences weren't as big or dedicated.

Worst ending to a game that I have played and I've been playing them since '86. The EC DLC helped, but it is still far from what I had expected. I'm certain that high expectations magnified the failure of the ME3 ending, but even so it was a disaster. Let's hope that BioWare can dig their way out of the hole they landed themselves in for ME4.

Slightly off-topic but could someone point me in the direction of a game with a good ending? Just curious.

Certainly the absolute worst ending to any game/game series I've ever played on a personal level. As for being the most notorious bad ending, I'd be inclined to agree. When a game's ending has got to the point where even people who don't play games are hearing about it and blasting holes in it left right and centre, then you know Bioware screwed up big-time.

Definitely not. There are a couple problems with such assertions. First, a good deal of the disdain stems from the original ending and the sh*t storm it created. Had the EC been included from the get go the response wouldn't have been nearly as visceral. Second and perhaps more importantly we've become spoiled...our expectations were extremely high, and with good reason. Traditionally, Bioware games have always been among the best in the industry in respect to RPG's, with each new title (generally) outdoing the previous in story content, action, and combat interface. Personally, my issue with the end isn't so much that I think it's "bad," as that I think they wasted a tremendous amount of potential. I think ME3 could have been beyond epic had they did something more "conventional." So it's more a matter of disappointment than outright disdain. Of course, my way of concluding the story would just be my artistic vision and not everyone would appreciate that. So no matter what they had done, a certain percentage of players would have been disastified with the direction they went. No, ME3 is hardly the worst VG in history. For me, despite the elements I consider flaws, I still think it's one of the best...

I haven't played a lot of the games people are mentioning, But with all the games I have, the only one that kinda comes close is the ending of Fable 3 if you kept all your promises but didn't bother making any money. Really, Albion might as well have been destroyed after that.

No. But people never cared as much.

Except Ultima... You know about Ultima. EA had something to do with that as well.

It's not the worst ending. It's just not that ending you expected. And that doesn't automatically mean it's the worst. It's hard to end a game story-deep like ME and satisfy everyone. I've seen much worse endings and also much better. I'd rate ME3 ending above average, but not perfect.
