Currently an Ant-man Movie is in the works,
Speaking as someone who thinks he's smarter than he actually is, This film will Tank finacially at the Box Office,
Now this isn't because I'm more of a DC fan or anything, But speaking from a Marketing standpoint,
How do you sell a film called "Ant-man" to the everyday movie going audience?
You can't sell a movie about a SuperHero with Shrinking/Growing powers, the same way you could sell a guy with Spider-powers or a Guy with advanced Suits of Power armor or Batman (don't need a vague description Because he's BATMAN).

and that's my thesis on why a Ant-man movie would tank at the box office, you just can't sell the Everyday Person on Ant-man.
If you disagree, Please Tell me why Ant-man won't Tank, Because I actually know next to nothing about the character (again DC fan) so there might be something I'm overlooking.
Just a note: I really hope this didn't come off as Bashing the character, that was not my intent just wanted to share my view on the film, I'll still see it, and hey it might be good, just wanted to give my viewpoint on the matter.

I don't know, if they do it right it could work. They'd have to infuse it with enough humor that it never seems too serious. I mean, noone would take Ant-Man serious like how they take Batman, but in a more comedic scenario, it could be funny and cool to see Ant-Man.

This very thing came up when my friends and I were discussing future Marvel movies. I didn't see a way they could make Ant-Man sexy and popular. Hank Pym is an interesting character, but Avengers the movie is all about big heroes doing big things against big opponents. Hank Pym's thing was all about making things small, and so is Wasp.

One thing they could do is have both Ant-Man and Wasp on a tiny adventure. The interplay between the couple, and possibly the tension if Hank develops into the Yellowjacket Hank Pym, could make for some good stories. I suggested that once Pym discovers the Pym Particles, that Ant-Man turns into Giant Man or Goliath and goes on a rampage.

And while I don't know how they would make a good Ant-Man film, I disagree that it will tank just because we can't figure out what they will do with it.

If they get Edgar Wright to direct like originally rumored it could be hilarious.

Plus I will go see ANY MARVEL movie that comes out. Especially if it's created by Marvel Studios like all of the recent Avengers franchise. They're just done . . . right.

That's what I thought when I first heard the name. If it were something more absurd and comedic like the Tick, that might grow more interest - though I'd say that ship has likely sailed. Similar to what stan said, I'm not sure if it's going to full-out tank...but it's going to have a hard time pulling in sales, without a doubt.

It would work if they had someone like Will Ferrell or Rainn Wilson playing Ant-man.

I had the same reservations about Thor, honestly.

More people know Thor and he has, undeniably, cooler powers than Ant Man. That being said, I still was concerned how they would be able to bring a Norse god super hero into the world of Iron Man and The Hulk. They pulled it off (obviously) and I enjoyed it greatly - mostly because they ditched the godlike nature of the source. Making them hyper-advanced aliens was a risk, but it worked really well.

Any Man is a cool character, and his powers are not a joke (in his large state, he could be a rough match for the Hulk for a few minutes, just like Thor and in his shrunken state, he could be the ultimate espionage character) but he was always hobbled by his name. I would be curious to see if they would follow the comic book character's other names, such as Giant Man or Goliath (much more movie-franchise friendly).

Still, given that the Wasp and Ant-Man were the actual founding member of the Avengers in the comics, it almost seems sacrilege to not try and give them a shot. But it needs to be of superb quality to even get a shot at not being laughed off stage.

I doubt it. It won't be even as good as Spiderman. It's title is dumb ...

I think the thought that will cross moviegoers' minds the most is "Who the hell is Ant-Man?"

And that is why it will bomb.

Antman is the Aquaman of Marvel.

True but both characters really should be evil, there powers would totally fit a person bent on distruction
althought aquamans ability will only collapse citys, countrys surrounded by water and vaction spots, so itd be more B rated funny and bad then just awesome and evil

Lol Aquaman maybe, I mean heck his nation has tried a couple of times to take over the surface.

Antman? Whats his MMO? Turning small, climbing in your ear, then growing big? Getting bugs to attack your home? All he does is turn the world into Jersey lulz.

Speaking as the "stupid general movie-going audience", exactly.

I'd never heard of this guy (see the other thread on the topic of the movie) and upon learning about him thanks to wiki and such, I find the entire concept absurd.

I'm not big on Superman, Spiderman, Batman, Thor, Hulk, Iron-Man, etc - but at least I'd HEARD of those guys.  I really thought Ant-Man was a joke.  I kind of still do.

I mean, what's he going to do, shrink and save the world from the evil Termite Queen, who's out to eat all the world's wood??

I just really can't see myself or anyone I know going to a theater to see this, and speaking for myself, I can't really envision even watching it on cable.

Hey, I thought Thor was going to bomb and it proved me seriously wrong. They'll probably shove in some other marvel character (Probably Nick Fury) to get a bigger audience.

Yeah, I don't have much faith in Antman doing well.

The issues I see happening:

1) The name. Most people aren't going to take the title of Antman seriously. Whether you like Thor or not, the title does inspire thoughts of greatness, deities, and Norse mythology. Ants aren't really regarded with the same reverence.

2) Lack of familiarity. Sure, Batman has some of the same issues (most people wouldn't say bats are very threatening), but at least by reputation, Batman is held in high regard as a hero. Most people don't really know who Antman is.

But who knows, I could be wrong. If I hear good things, I'll go see it.

Well, I guess they're kinda scraping the bottom of the barrel for new comic heroes now - all of the big names have been covered, and now they're bringing out not-so-well-known characters like Ant-Man and Doctor Strange. I don't see these guys standing well on their own - as support characters in a major movie like Avengers, perhaps, but not on their own.

Also, Thor wasn't particularly well-known in regards to the Marvel universe, but he is one of the major gods in the Norse pantheon, and is pretty familiar to most people in that sense. Ant-Man has no such advantage, m'afraid.

Well, we can be sure that they will likely advertise Ant-Man in a diffrent film, probably one of the bigger ones. So that will get some attention. Then, never ever underestimate the power of a good marketing campain. A good trailer can really help sell it.

Watch Earth's Mightiest Heroes for an idea of what they could do with the character's powers. Not only can he shrink himself, he can shrink other people.

Well, how exciting could that film be? A guy who can shrink to the size of an ant, lol! Who'll be the villain, the spider in the living room?
