Something I never understood, why the hate for Blood Mages in particular?

I haven't played Origins yet, but I noticed that blood magic was highly frowned upon in Dragon Age II. Why is that? I'm not even sure if I understand what it is exactly.

Blood magic is using blood, either of oneself or of another (usually of another) to fuel magic.

Because blood mages can control other people like puppets, and the templar think that being controlled by a blood mage violates your liberty, or some garbage like that.

Hmmmm, I'm guessing it's explained better in Origins? It's next on my list to play.

Blood Mages can basically mind control you without you knowing, uses the life essence of others to empower their abilities to be stronger than other mages (unless the other mages have reagents available) and raise the dead/summon demons under their bidding.

They have more abilities but basically, they're just more powerful than other mages and this is bad because of the threat it could cause to civilians and power attracts demons.

It is. But it's partially what bo said. They can control you completely.

Spoilers, if you feel you want to read them to get better understanding, do so. If not, no big deal.

There's a certain situation near the end of a quest where, after a whole bunch of stuff happens, you're attempting to kill an abomination--a demon taken control of a mage. However, at any time it can use blood magic to control you, so youre forced to use a certain tool to prevent this.

And, also, because usng blood usually means the death of the person who's blood you're using. Not always, but a lot of the time.

Wow. Now it makes a lot of sense. That's actually pretty scary to think about!

Even if you don't want to play a mage for the whole game, you should at least do a mage origin once in DAO. You will get a different perspective on circle mages, even if you played a mage in DA2.

It was actually going to be my first character. Maybe a blood mage.

My roomate played a few different characters on my account, so I've seen a few things about it. Just the combat system and graphics.

3 reasons
1) blood magic is learned by making deals with demons. demons are evil and no good should be expected from such a deal
2) blood magic requires blood, using your own may not seem to be too bad but many blood mages murder people for their blood which is bad! (and those who don't will be suspected of doing so)
3) with blood magic mages can do scary things like mind control. Many people are afraid of normal magic and will be terrified of what blood mages can do

Not always, Jowan was taught by other mages if my memory serves me right.

There's also the historical context to consider - blood magic was said to be taught to mortals by the Old God Dumat:

The Archon Thalsian, first of the Magisters, who claimed to have contacted the Old God Dumat, used the blood magic Dumat taught to him to attain incredible power in Tevinter and declare himself the ruler of an Empire. (from the wiki entry on The Old Gods)

So if the Old Gods are considered by a good portion of society to represent falseness, evil, all the wrong that a person should eschew, then anything that stems from them might be lumped into the category of things to avoid and/or hate. Thus blood magic is a derivative of evil, therefore must be evil in and of itself - or so the general perception has come to be by some individuals and groups in Thedas.

I think the term "Blood Magic" alone explain why blood magic is bad.

The Chantry forbids blood magic, so many in Thedas see it as evil. Blood magic isn't inherently evil, however. The Grey Warden mages have used blood magic to give them an edge when they battle the darkspawn. The phylacteries used by templars and the Joining Ritual are forms of blood magic. For mages who want to survive against templars - who can nullify their magical abilities with their templar abilities - blood magic is the only form of magic they can't nullify. "Some whisper that the Order's relentless hunt has driven good intended apostates to blood magic in their desperation to survive and keep their freedom."

Some mages use it because they see it as the only truly free school of magic: "The effects can be vile, but this specialization isn't limited to madmen and monsters. Many see it as the only form of magic that is truly free, because it's tied to the physical, not favors to spirits or demons."

Furthermore, while demons are one source of learning this outlawed specialization, they aren't the only source to gain this knowledge. In Origins, it's indicated that a mage learned from library books, and in Awakening, a mage can ask someone he believes to be another mage to teach him blood magic; some scholars even debate whether Arlathan elves taught the Tevinter mages blood magic, in contradiction to Tevinter's own lore on the subject.

Then there's the history of people seeing it used. Once, all of Thedas was conquered and under the control of the Tevinter Imperium. Now the Imperium is ruled by mages called magisters. And they're the ones who truly studied blood magic and its capabilities (from the lore, at first only using it to expand their mana pool, but then discovering certain spells could only be accomplished with blood magic, like mind domination.)

These magisters got into the habit of undergoing magical research, as mages often do. But the difference was that the magisters kept a large number of slaves on hand to be used as blood magic sacrifices, to provide a great deal more power than the magister was capable of performing on their own.

Blood magic can also replace the need for lyrium (which the Chantry has a monopoly on.) Rituals that require a lot of lyrium and several mages may be done by a single mage and blood magic, because it's so powerful in amplifying the mages power.
