Why Are There More Male Nerds than Female Nerds?

So the other night, when the moon was full and stars were set right, a strange thought snaked into my mind...

Why does it appear to be more male nerds/geeks than females? The gender imbalance seems perlexing to say the least. Theoritically speaking, wouldn't social awkwardness afflict both genders more or less equally? Or this is a result of social expectations destroying potential geek girls at a higher rate than their male counterparts? (closet nerds!?)

Now I'm not stating that females nerds don't exist, but lets be honest if you took ten random nerds, odds are, most of them will be male.

I am trying to be at least half serious in this inquiry, so if anyone has any thoughts to share, I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Probably because more guys are generally into computer technology than girls, and apparently tech whiz pretty much equals nerd. There's probably way more to it than that though but honestly, pfft, that's just life. Bear in mind though that gaming culture becomes more balanced in terms of gender every year.

Well, girls tend to mature faster than guys so at younger ages I think there are more socially awkward guys who just haven't matured into themselves yet. Also, if a good looking girl is socially awkward, it's more socially acceptable because girls are expected to be softspoken and shy. If a guy who is just as good looking is socially awkward, people think he's weird or needs to man up.

How exactly are you defining "nerd?"

I don't have any statistics before me, and I don't know that I would rely on any to state that there are more in one gender group than the other. I know that growing up, certain games, entertainment and other pursuits that would fall into the nerd or geek category were marketed to and for guys, thus creating a guy-as-geek/nerd social norm. As I've gotten older, I've seen less of that - the lines are blurring more. I could find 10 random nerds now, and I think the numbers would be even.

As for social awkwardness in general - yes, it does affect both genders, but probably in some different ways due to how each gender has been conditioned (socially), I would imagine.

I don't notice a higher percentage of male nerds than female nerds. Personally, I have more female nerdy friends than male. However, the stereotype and image put out to the public is that male nerds are the norm, but that's really just propaganda.

In my region its largely males as females tend to have tighter groups and more peer preassure. Men on the other hand, your in the group, or your not.

Such is the laws of nature. Since some Egyptian nerds in a basement somewhere picked up dice and played a game of Sarcophagi & Sphinxes.

Actually, everything known within our universe follows some sort of pattern, however enigmatic. From the endless depths of chaos emerges order.

Women are more often attached to a partner. Being a 'couple' is like cryptonite against social in-conformity. I meet so many guys who say they don't want to be a woman. Trust me, in this case you do. Women get the free pass.

In my experience, there are just as many female nerds as there are male nerds. However, male nerds tend to overlook the female nerds, and visa-verse. Nerds seem to have high standards, for some reason.I think it just seems that way because, as Rojahar said, it's the stereotype.

Male Stereotype tends to be fat, pasty guys living in their parents' basement, while Female stereotypes are either nonexistent or FREAKING THIS: http://news.mmosite....l_gamer,2.shtml I don't make my gender known on purpose and am still unattractive, I guess that shakes your types up, skater-boy-hair. Oh, wait, that's not how you tell someone off. Erm. Excuse me.

But, anyway, my point was female nerds don't seem to be worth mentioning by some people, and are often treated as some rare breed when they are found, even if they are not.

I'm guessing that joke also involved a kitchen.

Lemme guess, ran out of mayo, and decided toothpaste would make a good substitute?

They're out there but not so much where I live. It just has to do with social expectations. Fortunately those are really starting to blur and nerd culture is becoming more popular and acceptable.

Well . When i think of a ''girl gamer'' i always imagine a woman with 2 kids playing on the family computer for some reason. I think the consensus is that guy gamer are more independant and solitary while girl gamer are more dependant and often married. So the whole basement dweller(for guys) and married/kids (for womans) steretoype took shape.

It`s really a social thing why guy are picked the most. Since being a misfit and solitary is considered abnormal and destructive.

That my psychobabble for today.,

Lol..no, there aren't. There are far more males on the fringe of society than women. Women conform more than men do.

I don't understand this.  I was always a nerd, and I married a nerd.

What is a female, seriously? I've asked this and never gotten an answer.
