Tbh I kinda feel the same way op. Well I wouldn't go as far to say Udina>Garrus but i'm not really a huge fan of him either. I can only tolerate him as an LI and nothing else.
So on any of my malesheps I usually get him killed or ignore him completely...Simply cuz I really dislike the whole i'm suppose to be your awesome "bro" thing. It just annoys me personally heh.
I do like his voice tho...>_<;
Why do fans seem to love Garrus so much?

It's sad, I quite liked him in ME1.
Though I actually liked Udina. Or at least I think he was well written (in Mass Effect 1, and SOME parts of ME3).

Besides, suggesting than Udina is more likeable than Garrus is ...I don't know what it is.

It's impossible to have squadmates and not to talk to them. It's better not to have them at all. Plus there are even scenes that you are forced to talk with him. There aren't many of them, but I personally prefer Traynor than Garrus to come and talk with me in this situations.
Udina isn't more likeable than Garrus, but I personally like him more. You know, one day you'll find yourself hating one friendly character, while liking another, less likable character. It happens sometimes.

2. He admires shepard/the player. Trusts and listens to advice.
3. He's funny.
4. He is very renegon. Makes him interesting.

I was never a fan of him and his "bro" attitude in ME2, but in ME3 I really started to hate Garrus after BioWare's annoying attempts to make him Shepard's best friend even if you don't like him, or don't care for him. I really wished I could tell him to stay with the Turian military, but alas, it seems the only way for me not to have him is by killing him. Sad for Tali, but oh well...

What. ME1 Garrus has so little personality, it hurts to go back to ME1.
All he does is asks Shepards opinion and states his natural renegade lean on the topic. When you got Wrex and Ash on the opposite side of the room, he comes across as very bland.

In ME2 he already went down the renegade path which got a bit improved towards renagon thanks to Shepard. That attitude was kept in ME3: Garrus is renagon.
I wish the decisions you did in ME1 regarding Garrus' morality should have shaped his future more. I want a more paragade!Garrus ^^

Actually he does. He doesn't ask Shepard for anything. It was Shepard who gave his/her opinion about Garrus's attitude and idealism, and Garrus learning from what Shepard just said. I liked Garrus for that, at first being someone who will seek justice at all cost, which later who can either make him learn new lessons, or encourage his current idealism. The bond there between Shepard and Garrus was also much more meaningful to me there, a student and a teacher. It was more special than what came afterwards, in my opinion.

I agree. With my Shepard there is no way Garrus is his/her best friend. It feels forced liked with Liara. It would have been nice to have the option to leave him behind and let him become a war asset. I understand he is a fan favorite but why does it have to be forced. No Shepard without vakarian??? Really?? Could have done it without you Garrus.

I don't get the forced thing... its not like Garrus keeps coming into your cabin like Liara.
The only "forced" part is that Garrus takes all the good lines in missions. And you can avoid this by not picking him on missions you want other character's feedback.
Besides that, I like Garrus. I just wish the decisions I made in ME1 would have changed his character a bit ^^

Take for example the London goodbye scenes. You can accept Liara's gift, you can refuse it...and if you ignored her on the Normandy she doesn't even offer it. It's more or less the same with the other squadmates: a friendly response and a more neutral one. Garrus? You have two options for a response to him: "There is no Shepard without Vakarian" or "Shepard and Vakarian storming heaven". Or the speech Shepard is giving to him on the citadel about Garrus being his/her only true friend. If he survives ME2, he's not only Shepards friend...he's her best friend.

As a Garrus fan, I will admit that his "bro" vibe does feel kind of forced at times, especially during his recruitment in ME2.
*Sees Garrus take off his helmet on Omega for the first time*
Shepard: GARRUS! HOWYA BEEN, BUDDY? GOOD TO SEE YA! *fistpump*

Garrus has been with Shepard longer than most. He believed in him/her when almost nobody else did.
And you can completely avoid him in the first game, thereby nullifying that "longer than most" bit.
