Yeah, I see what you're saying. I don't think it's unreasonable to dislike (or not be fond of) Ashley in any of the games, but I definitely think ME3 made it a lot harder to 'appreciate' the character. Even if I don't entirely agree with her, I understand her perspective on things in ME1, but that credibility was stretched or undermined a little in ME3.

I'd say it's impossible.
Without ME1, I couldn't romance Ashley, period.
BW missed to include hook-up-content, same for Kaidan, while Garrus got a lot. Actually, given the fact he joins the crew in the first third of the game AND comes with a ton of great content, I wonder why you can't romance him in ME3 if you didn't in ME2. Because his buildup is AMAZING.

Ash on the other hand has only her hospital scenes. And you can miss them easily, so you have -no- connection to her if you never played ME1. That makes her a non-option for most players who started with ME2 or ME3.

Know what I mean?
Garrus got an amazing amount of great content, allowing the player to become a friend of Garrus.
Ashley got some good scenes but no content to hook up with her. The romance makes only sense if you romanced her in ME1.
Actually, ME3 is the reason why we're constantly losing Ash fans :P

i wouldnt say were "losing" ash fans. Mass effect is over. so is ashs story (for now).players have moved on. did some ppl jump ship after the coup standoff? sure. but plenty of people still love ash. from what i heard a crap load of ppl went to see kim and ralph at comic con not that long ago.

as far as garrus amazing content gose.id say he has alot, but its not really THAT great. i think hes a shell of what he was in ME1 and ME2. hes reduced to tag along sidekick for much of his content.

Garrus is consistently good. While some characters like Wrex have super awesome moments, Garrus has been relatively interesting throughout every game. He's quite different in 1 compared to the rest of the games, because he's just coming to terms .with wanting to break the rules and work outside the law. In 2, he's become a straight up vigilante and it's up to Shepard to further guide whether he fights only for justice or lets vengeance drive him, similar to with Dr Saleon in 1.

He also has quite a bit of funny dialogue if you use him on a bunch of missions.

Gameplay wise, he's always been the long-distance superiority character. It's unfortunate he outshined Thane, the other sniper in 2, so much. Thane should have been way better in 2 with how much his character was hyped. Should've been smgs and pistols and had a bunch of powerful hand to hand abilities. But I digress. Garrus was useful in both 1 and 2, though he was outshined in 1 by Kaidan (no one in 1 was better than Kaiden power-wise, except maybe Liara). But in 3, if you give Garrus the Black Widow, proximity mine with radius and damage taken, chain overload, and his passives? It's just absurd, and every enemy will simply explode into jelly.

Each playthrough is different, I know, but in mine, (male shepard, paragon, romanced Liara), Kaidan and Garrus were both cast by BioWare as Shepard's closest friends, with people like Wrex and Tali coming in close behind.

He appeals to (most, I'm sure there's some people who aren't high on him) both sides of the fan base. FemShep players fawn over him as a love interest and the people who play male Shepard think he's the ultimate bro. A lot of character don't have that.

Well, I guess he isn't so bad. I still find that Jacob is more interesting than Garrus currently after completing my ME2 FemSent run. Although I now understand where everyone is coming from.
