Character Creator has some issues . . .

Rather happy with it overall, but nothings perfect. :(

Things that are annoying:

Lighting: I easily find the lighting to be the worst issue with the character creator (outside of outright bugs), it makes it hard to determine colors. I ended up putting the gamma quite far up because eyes were especially hard to make out in the lighting. The lighting itself is fine really, quite warm and artistic even . . . but it's not so hot when you're trying to make a character - the color of the lighting needs to be neutral.

Resets:  When you go back in to modify an existing character, several values seem to reset themselves (portraits, backgrounds, voice . . . probably more than that but those are what were immediately obvious).

Voice Selection problems:  On occasion, for whatever reason, when clicking on a voice you'll get silence. At other times you'll click on them, and a sound will play, but the mouth won't move at all.

Mouth size issues:  Playing with the voice selection, especially on female characters, the mouth will move at male proportions instead of female. It's really quite off putting.

The Teeth: The Teeth.

Things that can likely be modded in anyways:

Hair color:  I noticed everything from gray/white to blonde to brunnette was in there. Then I noticed that the darkest color was just a dark brunnette, not a black/raven color at all. I can't think of any lore reason for the lack of black/raven hair, so what gives? It's certainly a color people have.

Hair Styles:  Very limited selected, and several seem like very slight alterations of one another. Modders in other games have shown long hair can work, without clipping, and that even when there is clipping most players don't seem to care. A lot of modders cheat with long hair, say a pony tail (set back far enough that it can't possibly clip) with long bangs that end at the chin. Non-straight hair is also lacking, wavy and curly hair styles just aren't there. Several games have shown just adding a non-straight texture, even though the model itself remains the same, can be a small but nice thing to add as a bare minimum. Though as long as we can mod in our own none of it matters too much.

Skin tones:  It's likely because of the lighting, but even the lightest skin tones seem quite tanned. Pale skin, without looking sickly, is entirely possible, and exists on a great many people . . . so I have to wonder at it being left out.

Things I'd like to see changed one day, far off, in DA:O2:

Modifying the body type: I can't tell you how limiting it is to try and create say, a lanky roguish character, especially as a human, when the only body type you're allowed is large and bulky.

Camera position and zoom control: More control over the camera and zoon in all modes of character creation would be a nicety.

Control over the lighting:  Being able to see how a character will look under various modes of lightning, including a base neutral lighting scheme, would be helpful in determining just what you're doing with some options.

-

Mind you, of course, that these are all quite minor things. I'll leave the real bugs to people able to describe them in more detail, and, really now . . . everything works quite well and a few silly things like the above aren't much in the scheme of things. I'm really quite happy with the result.

Lighting definitely is a problem.

On another note, I just want to say that the stubble is very patchy and abnormal looking.

Agreed completely. Sometimes if you click on the character too fast during a zoom in you can freeze the camera at a certain position and since there is no zoom button (WHY!?) you have to back out and load back in again. I hope there is a zoom option in the retail game, but chances look slim.

If you choose a preset face with a beard, and change anything, your cheeks get sucked in. This also happens if you start with a preset with no beard, and try to add one. Only way to fix it seems to be to select a new preset face.

You can see the neckline on male elves and humans. I mean there is a physical gap between the "head" and "neck". It is only on the back and is covered by hair. So really only the bald and short hair in the back will make it visible.

What is actually happening is any face with a beard automatically has certain selections for the mouth, jaw, and cheeks.  You can't modify those parts of the face with a beard, even if the beard is just a moustache or sideburns.  It's annoying.

I agree with most of the points in t he OP (especially the hair, and the lighting), but I want to add that overall I think it's a great character creator.  I've never played with one that I didn't have some issues with.

Biggest issues for me is absence of separate eyebrows slider (as in shape not just color and texture) and lack of lip shapes verity. Both lips and eyebrows are important part of the characters face for me - they allow for more expressiveness.

Technical issues are there as well - sometimes the CC saves certain parts of the face wrong, one of my chars I could barely recognize after I so her saved version, but I hope that is only CC problem.

For me it's:

teeth color

elven chin shape that stays rather pointy no matter what you do to it

lack of hairstyles as mentioned above

lack of normal eyeshapes for elves (seems like your average elf should have really really small eyes)

lack of lip shapes

tatoos on Dalish that seem to live a life of their own

and yeah as a realy pale person I feel left behind ;)

Yep I second that. I'd like to see some very pale skin, especialy for elves. Everyone seems to have a dose fo healthy tan in DA :D

Actually, I hear that in-game everyone tends to look paler than they do in the character creator. We'll see.

It will have to be much paler than on the character portrait to be sufficient for me Since CC uses "candle light" I can imagine that the char will look paler and less "golden" in game :)

I wish there was a dark-blond hair color.

And yea, I also totaly agree with the lighting, what ever made the devs think that a dark room would be good as a character creation?

It crashed like only 6 times as well. other then that i love it cant wait.

Body customization. I wish for my females to have a bit of waist and hips and not have a male figure.

Indeed, I need to restate that no matter the issues I really am fond of what Bioware have made for us, and am more than grateful to get to play with it so early on.

I can't believe I overlooked that.

I know the feeling.

I suppose we'll just have to see on that front.

I applaud all of these suggestions. To be honest, I'm pretty happy with it as is, but I'd still love it of these minor... issues? were addressed. Then it would be perfection.

I found an interesting issue where the stubble selections for human males are cut in half when editing an already-created character.

For instance, I'm unable to go back to "clean shaven", because the bug causes every-other stubble option to be repeated (halving the total options). Thus, when I take the slider all the way left, I always retain chin-fuzz :(

I actually hadn't noticed that one. That sounds rather annoying.

Yeah I definitely agree with body customization and I wish there was a real black or raven hair colour too but overall its fun to play with.

Body customisation would be great.

One thing that did strike me is how long arms are...

Ohh, and speaking as a dwarf-fan, the beard choices are quite disappointing.

Also, the tattoos could do with a bit more variety.

Overall though, the CC is an excellent little tool and a great taster of things to come.

So far I've uploaded only 3 characters, but only the first has a picture - anyone else with this issue?

Seems I can't change the class (warrior to rogue) without losing the entire customisation.

The character creator only saves my character with a kind of tattoo. The program does not change to any other type of tattoo. Even if I make the creation or issue with the tattoo I want, when I open the program is always with another tattoo.

Does anyone have this problem?
