I have been playing the game for a few days now on nightmare difficulty from the start. I am enjoying the game, though as mentioned in many reviews, certain things are annoying. In any event, I find nightmare difficulty to be far more difficult than the one in Dragon Age Origins. On very tough fights, I had no choice but to go elsewhere to raise my level and have better equipment before attempting the fight again.

In any event, I have the Black Emporium DLC. Right from the start, it gives you some pretty powerful free equipment (I forgot what). I elected not to use these as I found it reducing overall challenge and overpowering. Seems like you can summon your Mabari dog for fights. That is pretty powerful having an extra pair of legs (or in this case, two pair of legs) on the battle field. So far, I haven't used that. Do you think that is overpowering? I mean, it is not originally how the game was supposed to be played. Also, one can change attributes/skills - what are your thoughts on that?

I generally only summon the mabari early on in the game, but usually put them away once I have a full party. I also don't like how they are uncontrollable. I've found the mabari most useful for when I am surrounded by several tough enemies and use them to distract some of the enemies to hopefully keep them away from Anders/Varric. At higher levels, the mabari is more useful as a distraction for the opposition than a source of damage. They shouldn't make fights end that much quicker.

Having the mabari as a summon, rather than an actual controllable party member was in response to so many people using mods in Origins that allowed that to happen, so it became the default in DA2.

That free equipment can be handy, but I don't use much of it, aside from the cunning boosting ring for my main lockpicker. DA2 throws plenty of dlc items at the player that can quickly make them overpowered, so use with caution.

As Arthur said, the mabari is really only good as a secondary tank. He doesn't do very much damage; mostly, he just ties up a few enemies.

The powerful free equipment loses its effectiveness by the end of Act 1 and the ability to change your stats/skills is immensely helpful but never broken.

Yes, I am aware the Mabari is uncontrollable and was planning to use it only as a diversion/decoy.

I didn't use any of the free items from the Black Emporium and those you can buy are pretty expensive. Still in act 1. Playing on nightmare it is pretty difficult but is getting easier slowly. Templars at chantry are major PITA (level 8 or 9 right now). May have to grind one or more levels before I get back there.

One note of caution: enemies scale with you. So increasing in level might not actually make the fight easier, unless you're one level away from gaining the necessary talents that make cross-class combos viable.

I read somewhere that enemies scale up to a certain point and not beyond that (I don't remember where I read it).

Anyways....... is the Black Emporium the only place in the game where there is a potion which allows one to reassign attributes/skill points?

The Maker's Sigh potions and the Mirror of Transformation are the main reasons to visit the Black Emporium, along with the attribute/talent tomes. Yes, that's the only place to get the potions.

While the better items are generally expensive, you can raise the funds if you hold on to your money. I wouldn't buy anything that I thought that I might replace later. You'll do fine by using the weapons and armor that you loot during the game while you save up for the good stuff that you'll take to the end of the game. For the most part, only spend money on backpacks and companion armor upgrades.

Hmmmmmmmm..... I am playing on nightmare difficulty. Though I've learned much (over the last two days experimented with Maker's Sign potions and different builds), some fights are pretty difficult. All the daggers I found in loot were completely iffy and only ones I could buy had good damage.

Though still in act one.

I decided not to use the black emporium stuff, at least for now (level 8 or 9). Reason being that too powerful stuff is available too early on. Only used Maker's Sign potion to respec Merill as she should have been (blood mage).
