I have noticed that, while just about every bioware game has let you play as a black character, none of them have offered natural black hairstyles in the character creator. This is perticularly annoying in the DA series, since I imagine straightening irons are in short supply in thedas. This may seem like a small issue, and the associated phenotypes of dark-skinned people could be different in the DA universe, but it would be nice to be able to create a character like this one:

That hair is horrid.

And I am a black person.

As another black person I think that hair looks cool but I don't see why you're using it as an example. It's not afro-textured hair. The cornrows could be afro-textured, I guess, but the rest is just plain straight hair.

As a white person, I don't see why this should not be included.

I am also confused about that picture being used as an example of 'afro-textured' hair as it seems to be long and straight hair.

I think he/she's talking about the coarseness, actually. "Nappiness," lol.

I just hate that hair.

I always go with the emo and perfectly straight hair.

I have no argument for why this shouldn't be included. Nor do I have an argument for why it should.

These are fictional settings. Afro-textured hair might not exist. Similarly, BioWare could conceivably make a game where all hair is afro-textured. I don't think anyone would have cause to complain about that, either.

Not that I'm saying the OP is complaining. He seems to be making a polite request for a feature he'd like. I can certainly support that.

This. I do like the picture, and I do love the parts that are braided, but the straight parts at the end are not really afro-textured.

Current 3D graphics are not very good at rendering hair, particularly curly hair. If they can't make it look well, I'd rather not have it.

If that were the case then Sten's "cornrows" and h3h3 Carvers "dreadlocks" would not exist.

Anywho, The idea would be nice, though I doubt Bioware would be up to such a challenge. I mean...I doubt they would be up to...doing it well. I'm thinking the fly off pieces of hair are microbraids not just straight hair ^^
Though who in their right mind would get them. They are a pain to take out.

Not necessarily. You can dread and cornrow straight hair as well.

I agree with you, AndrahilAdrian – I'd love to be able to give some of my characters realistically rendered afro-textured hair.

Nope, Bioware made those hairs to mimic kinky hair.  If they were just meant to be straight hair braided or locked why would they make them at all, there are a crap load of straight hairs. Even more so in DA2.

Notably Decimus does use one of these hairs, but that's definitely used to show that his hair is just dirty and matted (thanks Bioware)

dreads are pretty much all nasty and filthy anyway. Not so with cornrows, though.

I was speaking of fictional settings generally, not this one in particular.

And cornrows don't require afro-textured hair.  Long-haired competitors in combat sports routinely wear cornrows, regardless of hair type:

Huh. Well he looks rather black. Interesting. Perhaps it's the angle.

My mistake.

A bald fade (Anderson's and Jacob's haircut) would be a welcome (and simple, I think) addition. The current alternatives (bald or balding or corn rows) just aren't sufficient.

Also skin tone could use more variety in the darker spectrum. Say what you will about Kingdoms of Amalur, but this part of character creation they got very right as do some other games that support the feature.

Simply claiming to be Black on the Internet doesn't give you the right to be ignorant and prejudiced. You obviously know nothing about dreads, so just don't talk about them.

And yes, I have worn my hair in locks in the past, along with my mother. I have never encountered as much straight up ignorance and racism as I did when it came to my hair...

There are no black people in Thedas,as you mean it. Just people with darker skin color. Remember that Thedas is based on Europe - not America, not Africa, not Asia. That's why you don't see any asiats or indians either.

On top of that, the picture you linked is terribly inaccurate. It says its showing Antivan apostate but that's completely wrong. Because Antiva is based of medieval Spain, and not Africa. People from Spain, despite having darker skin color, wouldn't probably wear dreadlocks, like you suggest (more elaborated styles probably).

And in case that Bioware finally decides to make an improvement to hairs, they should first and foremost improve their models (skeleton/meshes of hairs), and primary provide the *classic* long hairstyles, without any 'improvement', which would be appropriate to the settings of the Dragon Age franchise.

EDIT: My mistake. Actually Antiva is bassed of Italy, and Rivain is based on Spain.
