Not sure how you've got that as ME2 can import characters from ME1 just fine and I have only ever played ME2 with characters started in ME1. However, it's important to be aware that the career save in ME1 is not the same file as the game save, and it is the career saves that ME2 imports. Couple of tips that should help you.
First, look in your ME1 saves folder, which by default will be C:/Users/[your user name]/Documents/BioWare/Mass Effect/Save. Make sure there are saves in there with names that look like this:
Char_01-50-2-1-0-19-2-2012-82-58.MassEffectSave
That's a save game for a level 50 Soldier Shepard that completed the game on 19th Feb 2012. The 2-1-0 bit refers to things like military history and personal background etc, which you don't really need to worry about but can help in identifying characters if you end up with a lot of them. Personally I find the date and level easier to see in the file names anyway. Anyway, you should have one of these files for each and every time you - and I'm forced to be careful with my words here since you chose a spoiler free zone of the forum to open this thread - defeat the final boss in ME1. Not every time you complete a playthrough, just every time you defeat that boss. Click resume in the main menu and fight him again and you'll get a second career save with a very similar name.
Having established that you've got the right saves in the folder the next thing is to tell ME2 where they are. Why it doesn't check the location by default when you tell it you want to play an imported character in the game I have no idea but as it is you need to user the ME2 configurator to do it. Not sure where this lives in Origin but in the Steam download you launch it from right clicking the game in the library. One of the options in it is (going from memory here as I'm not at the right computer) Save Games, and when you click that you'll see an option about importing ME1 games. Then it becomes a simple matter of browsing down a folder tree in the configurator to the ME1 Save folder.
