i have to agree with this statement i made a new mage and started messing around with different spells and its my new fav.knarayan wrote...
Mana Clash. You have to love a spell that does 4 digit damage regularly.
Otherwise, Fireball.

Lots of good ones mentioned here, but for taking out a dragon or revenant, multiple mages with cone of cold.

Death Cloud + Earthquake = Watch them fall whilst they try to escape certain death.

I've grown very partial to Sleep + Walking Nightmare. I still have a LOT of spells to try, but that combo is just way too much fun. Crushing Prison is awesome against enemy mages.

Cone of cold. I always have Leliana and a 2hander in the party (Sten or myself) so I get 3 guaranteed shatters (mighty blow, critical blow, critical shot) and possibly more. It's effective and I like the sound and visual effects that go with it.

The Walking Bomb spells. The explosion graphic is fantastic.

Virulent walking bomb and glyph of repulsion can be a real riot.

Storm of the century is my fav, it deals awesone lightning damage and has the biggest aoe. If you were to use it with either earthquake or the 3rd glyph mobs are almost always dead. However it gots 2 main drawbacks:
- It cost almost all of your mana so better be sure to kill them all (but you can also use other party member to kill the injured ones)
- Let's say you killed them all, you gotta wait forever for the storm to end
Skill points wise, you have to learn tempest, blizzard and the 3rd skill of mana drain line so if you want to mana burst it's pretty cool

I agree, Virulent Walking Bomb for me. I always get that chain, as I love the chunks and the skeleton companion. The only thing better would have been if the enemies actually disappeared and you could loot the chunks!
Few things finer than using Waling Bomb spell, then running up and hacking them with sword till the moment of explosion.

Mana Clash. Mages are annoyingly powerful, and being able to have a mass kill mage instant cast spell is awesome.

I really enjoyed the Walking Bomb spells on my mage--made me feel powerful. I also enjoyed Death Cloud on occasion. The dark, death-related, necromancy-like spells have always been my favorite form of magic.

Mana Clash, because it's devastiting against the most annoying enemies, that's saying mages.
Crushing Prison, because I love the crowd control abilities and CP can also shatter enemies frozen or petrified.
Fireball + Inferno to maximize AoE damages.
Cone of Cold and Mind Blast, because they saved me a lot of times

Blood Wound. Pretty much the epitome of the awesomeness of mages.

If I had to choose one it would be cone of cold. Also a big fan of sleep, force field and crushing prison. I used fireball alot on my last playthough but suffered from too much friendly fire. Also alot of mobs are immune or resistant to fire damage.

I'm gonna have to say Glyph of repulsion, it has saved me more times then heal ever has

Fireball
I like sending them through doors and and at enemies on ledges and seeing them burning. Also low cooldown is always good

Animate Dead. 'nuff said!

Mana Clash. Instant area kill for most mages, and those few that survive won't be able to do much more than poke you with their pea shooter. It even works on demons and shades, though not instant kill. It's almost cheating considering how much easier it makes mage fights.

Force Field is my favourite. I just wish that enemies didn't attack force-fielded characters. Because it's broken using Force Field + Taunt, but the spell itself is completely fine otherwise. Only sure way to survive and overwhelm etc. Also, should be t4.
Better than C Prison, because it has an extremely quick cast time, hardly ever resisted, and can be used on your allies in previously mentioned grab/overwhelmed situation.

you know the best combo for animate dead is spell might, nothing like getting spellcasting skeletons which is another favorite spell

Misdirection Hex. Stops bosses + revenants doing anything to you and makes them just targets.

I usually freeze/petrify + walking/vir bomb + stone fist/crit hit. A nice way to kill and spread the pain.

Affliction and Vulnerability hex. Nothing like doubling the damage of all your other spells, staff attacks and elemental weapon damage.
