I wonder if it's ever occured to those "no mic, no play" players that I don't use my mic because I don't feel like talking to a disrespectful little brat?

i had some kid ask me why I talk to the other team mates, I told him that's the way it is, your playing as a guest random the other three including me are on my team, he replied "I think your all bonkers", made me laugh because we were having so much fun.

In answer to the insult, I think it's disgusting, I have accidentally killed one, my team mate just replied typical you wally lol,

Yeah, that's why I don't ever play with a mic either. Most people just assume I'm a guy on PS3, and so be it, if that saves me all of the nonsense that most dudes spout off to girls while playing games. Which is kind of sad.

Why?

If someone insulted me, I'd leave (normally I'd wait until the current match ended, but if I heard another player insulted like that I would be fine with them leaving during and I'd leave myself after the match ended).

I mean, wouldn't even a random PUG likely be better/less insulting/just as easy to "carry" as you say, as such a group?

Mixed message; you seem to be upset enough to post, but you weren't upset enough to stop CARRYING the offending speaker?

Caveat: Depending upon what was said - e.g. quoting a certain SP character in the Presidium Commons - I could see someone trying to be funny and failing, but otherwise, why continue to help them through multiple games?

More generally, I don't have a mic, but usually when people use it it's a plus that adds to the game - either for setting the mood/cheering, or some players help out even when downed, looking around in spectator mode and warning about incoming enemies, etc. I've only heard a couple of women speaking, but I've never heard anyone insulted - not even me when I was playing gold the first time and didn't know not to hang around the LZ in wave 11. There were a few amusing comments, of course...Image IPB I guess it's because I'm on PC, I've never heard anyone be insulted in this game.

Since the official release, I have never encountered any foul mouthed players when I random. I host when one or more of my friends wishes to play, otherwise I random. Playing from South East Asia, I am the minority. Even with an average ping of 250-275, there so far have not been any foul mouthed players.

The only barrier that I run in is language barrier. Once played with some Russians, some Dutch and the occasional French; our common word is just Phantom, Banshee and Thank You :D

PS: PC Platform and if you're wondering how I track ping? Creakazoid's ping tool. Look up his signature for it!

In a gold game, apparently I had accidentally killed one of someone's sabotaged target. I didn't know this yet, but I hear a few seconds after I do "Person with the mic, quit being a dck" followed by more obscenities and something else I couldn't exactly hear. I wanted to figure out what exactly warranted calling me this, especially when in reality it was over something so minimal as a destroyed sabotage.

So I get on my mic and ask him why exactly he's so angry with me, and goes on to tell me what exactly sabotage does. Well, yeah, thanks Einstien. I know what the power does, I was asking what I did wrong and he begins to talk down to me as if I'm completely clueless while I'm carrying his sorry bum. I at least know now what exactly did wrong.

But worst yet when I told him I was sorry, and he didn't need to call me a dck, he turns and says this instead.
"Well would you prefer I call you a [insert women genitalia here] instead?"

I mean, really?
The moment you find out I'm a girl you use that against me? From a grown man, no less. At that point I didn't want to hear another word from him so I just turned off my mic but continued to play in their lobby where I continued to carry him and the rest of the team.

So what I'm getting at, is. There is usually absolutely no point for me to use my mic and try and play tactically with anyone (besides friends) in this community, because all it results in are petty insults. If I wanted to argue with grown men I'd be playing CoD or some other FPS right now. /rantrant

Anyone else run into some lovely users as of late?

I actually had one that was bad enough, that I reported it to Chris Priestly directly. Some Teen/young adult was yelling everyone, telling them they suck, and even shreiking with one of those high pitched, child temper tantrum screams.

I'm on PS3, too. I don't always mic up, but I'm friendly when I do. If I take issue with something, I'll politely point it out, and if it's still a problem, I'll just simply bow out.

Feel free to add me on PS3 (SN: Mafia_Steve). I've been trying to get some regulars to play with, seeing as my real life friends don't play this game. My N7 rating is 846.

No, PS3 actually.

I know it's bad on xbox though. Haha.

"Bad" doesn't cover it. "Nightmare" would be the term I'd use. That's what happens when the game attracts the Halo and Gears audience... ~_~

Aww im sorry. :( That's why I never I use a mic anymore. When I first got my gamertag I did, but then there was a incident with a prev, I mean random, while playing Halo3... An argument and a gamertag change later, I now never use my mic unless I have to.

I wasn't going to report him for being a moron, lol.
People have a right to say what they want, I just don't like the fact that this makes them think they can try and belittle other players.

What I find makes me angry and confused is when someone who's speaking doesn't seem to be wired right in the head, they'll say things that don't make any sense except what I can only assume is only in their mind.

This sounds like another case of the audacity of anonymity, I'm sorry you had to deal with this A-hole. =(

For the most part, people on PC have been cooperative, but most people don't speak at all. Maybe part of it is it's because randoms are complete strangers.

I hate using my mic. People are racists. From the sound of my voice they assume I can't afford Xbox , Xbox live or a tv. They assume I'm playing on cardboard tv an what not. Really annoys. What I hate the most is I never use my mic, BUT, my negative feed back on my Xbox live profile is about me talking trash? WTF is that all about.

I wouldn't worry about it, I had 7% Trash Talk or something on my account... before I even had a mic. ;P

People just make crap up because people are petty and have no lives, apparently.  I usually just report those people for cheating (usually because they are).

Also, ladies, please don't be scared off from talking to other people by a few ****s. Gaming is much better as a social experience, and all socializing is better with ladies around.

I don't think he called you a vagina specifically because you were female...

I've been called one nUmerous times, and I'm a guy.

Usually only if they're British, because it's more common there and seems to have less of a social stigma attached to it, especially when used amongst males to playfully call each other.  In North America, it tends to be used against women more as a form of misogyny, an attempt to offend, disgust and/or intimidate women, because some women find the 'c' word incredibly offensive and/or disgusting.  I dated a couple of girls who both mentioned that they find that word very offensive (and these weren't women who were easily offended, especially by foul language), and my sister also mentioned that she hates that word.

I'd definitely classify it as an example of 'fighting words', language with social connotations which specifically are employed for the purposes of causing insult, arousing anger and inciting hatred.

Of course, context is important, as I've seen the same word used in literary erotica for entirely different purposes. ;)  But in its use as directed invective, it's definitely meant to offend, and specifically offend women.

While the PS3 communitty is smaller, it's usually better behaved than what you described. I think you just need some good people to roll with. I have a great group of friends, if you want to play sometime, friend me. PSN is in sig.

Dude that's not cool btw was this a little kid? If so I immediately mute them regardless since they never have anything good to say.

Anywho I don't mind if people kill my sabotaged targets in fact the whole point is that they do kill it. Granted its a good way to kill things as a QFI but still ... its not like its my only way to kill things it just helps and also weakens my target.

That kid/person was the epitome of douchebagery and I am sorry that you had to go through with that. If you were on xbox i'd say you could come play with me and my buds (we trash talk each other but its all in good fun)

Yeah, I'm throwing another one in for "people don't act like immature kids on PC for the most part."

I picked up the game a few days after launch from GreenManGaming (at 10 dollars off = woot free day one dlc) and have been playing pretty regularly. N7 in the 1700s, play all manner of difficulty depending on my mood.

I'll speak up whenever someone else is using their mic, and I've never heard anyone speaking disrespectfully, whether to a male or female gamer.

I only feel bad turning down so many friend requests because I'm a Steam loyalist and don't want to make friends on Origin, as I'm not sticking around on this platform past ME3.
