So after 10+ playthroughs I actually talked to him at the start of act 3.  I know from MoA the guy has a strange side but hey who am I to judge.  What I don't understand is why is he so hostile toward Hawke?  I am playing a mage and could see that as a reason, especially since the templars have all but assumed control of the city.  Is he like that if a warrior or rogue?  I assume so but don't have a save to test it.

Yes, though I assume its because he doesn't want to end up working for a fereldan turnip, who mage or no has a known strong line of magic in the family (strong comparatively to andrastian nations, probably only a meager line by tevintar standards).

Yeah I think it's just that he resents your rise. Bran's a Kirkwaller who's probably worked very hard for most of his life to attain his position. In rides Hawke and after only 4 years in the city he's got an estate in Hightown and is having private meetings with the Viscount. At that point you're encroaching on his position but then you become Champion and surpass him.

Y'all are giving really practical reasons for his resentment.  I decided it was because Hawke spread word of his STDs throughout Kirkwall and now Bran can't get certain needs met.  Anders really should explain HIPAA to his friends.

That explains why Brann has to take the female Elf with the male voice from the Blooming Rose as his "date" to the hunt in MotA.

(I get the feeling that the female elf having a male voice was a mistake, but then, they made it canon that the elf's a transvestite in MotA. To quote Tallis, "Awkward.")

I figure that Bran is just a huge ****** who doesn't appreciate sharing the Viscount's confidence with some Fereldan upstart.

Still, I give the guy some credit: if you badmouth Seamus after the end of Following the Qun, he calls out Hawke for being a jerk.

If Hawke does anything other take his leave of the confrontation with the Viscount and his son, Bran shows his displeasure with Hawke's interference in a personal matter of the Viscount.

I doubt Serendipity was a mistake, there were 'female' companions (transvestites) at the Pearl in DA:O (they show up if you choose 'show me some of both').. plus.. well the name Serendipity  (meaning - "making desirable discoveries by accident").

sorry to go a tad off topic

Bran generally shows disfavor for anything Hawke does.

My God Bran is the Turian Councillor of Dragon Age. Next game there'll be air quotes I'm calling it.

I dunno how valid the "I hate Fereldans" theory is regarding Bran. He's fairly cordial to Aveline the Guard Captain, who pretty much is a woman that made a name for herself in short order. Shorter then it took Hawke to acquire everything.

I think what Bran really takes issue with is just how Hawke acquired everything. First he was a fortune-hunter whose fame in the Deep Roads and prior contact with the Qunari caused him to become important, next he just stumbled into the position of Champion through a brief war.

It's not the who, but the how. His belief is that Kirkwall has far too many mercenaries and fortune-hunters, and Hawke is simply one more of them. Still, he's not hostile towards Hawke. He's not nice to Hawke either. He's simply just a tired politician, being used by the Templars by Act 3.

That said, his comments to a pro-Mage, anti-Meredith, anti-TemplarsInPower Hawke are shortsighted and not befitting of someone with experience in politics, because he'd benefit from working with Hawke on such a thing.

To be fair, it's not exactly uncalled for. Hawke's a stranger to the Viscount interjecting in a personal and very private discussion the Viscount is having with his son.

Not so much Bran as the entire collective nobility of Kirkwall, when Hawke presents them with information on the Qunari sleeper cells after MotA's end.
