I also like having a home in RPG's. Taking the idea of Vigil's Keep and expanding on it for a bigger game could be interesting.  (Having a castle was also cool in Suikoden.)  It has to make sense though.  It made sense in Awakening because everything was nearby.  And maybe as a base of operations it makes sense in DA3.  Granted, what if you travel too much for it to make sense to go back there?  Well, if you ever travel that far away, maybe you have a camp too.  Would need to know about the game.  Talking about a castle in isolation though, yeah, I usually like owning castles. Just as a general rule.

You know, really, the only way I can see BW making a PC that honors both the players' desire to have some kind of PC background choices, and BW's need to guide the story---is if the PC is some type of orphan.

The backgrounds can vary, but then the orphan learns of their..ahem.."Legacy". A spiritual; familial; bloodline stuff; successor to---whatever it is that's going on with DA3.

So, the PC would be essentially plopped into the middle of this madness, and can have various perspectives of the situation based on their upbringing.

You know, a kind of legacy might really be a good alternative to the whole "[Name] saved someone really important! Let's give [Name] the responsibility of saving the world from certain doom!" scenario.
And the player could have a few options concerning their background. Like

A) Street rat: PC grew up all alone on the streets, lying, cheating and stealing in order to stay alive.
B) PC stayed alive by joining a group of people that experienced the same hardships. They looked out for each other and became something like family.
C) PC was found on the street by a nice, but poor couple. They raised PC as their own and he/she had a happy, if hard, childhood.
D) PC got adopted by a rich couple. He/she never lacked anything, but never really felt close to his/her parents.

And so on. That might not be as varied as some of us would want, but it's enough to satisfy me.

I like the idea of having a "home" in DA world. Maybe we will still have a camp, but can occasionally go back to the castle for meeting...kind of like having a headquarter.

I agree with this, In origins we were forced into camping in the woods do to the warden being on the run.In Da2 this was not the case so the mansion was a nice gesture to me.Unless we're on the run again in Da3, I can't see myself sleeping in the forest for the sake of sleeping in the forest

To be honest, the way the story seems set up it looks like you would either be travelling incognito with a base of operations to go to.

So I bet we shall see both.

But you wouldn't be sleeping in the forest for the sake of sleeping in the forest. You'd be doing it for the sake of FRIENDSHIP. And romantic evenings by the fire. If you can ignore the insects trying to eat the flesh from your bones. (See? Romance!)

I would love to play a street rat come to power in friggin' Orlais. In fact, I do think those street rat skills would serve the PC quite well in a place like Orlais. And in a situation like civil war and political intrigue.

And if you had some other ppl you grew up with...you could potentially have another great underground network of information.

Here we go, Mike Laidlaw's latest tweet:

"I know a lot of folks have questions for me, recently, regarding some DA information that's been careening around the net. We're sticking to a "show me when you tell me" approach, so I won't be addressing the questions until we have gameplay to show. However...I'm listening, and reading. We'll try to make sure your questions are addressed in time. Earnestly: thanks for your patience."

I wouldn't mind an occasional inn, either though.

There were times in DA:O when I took some of my crew to the Gnawed...Noble? Was it?...

Anyway, I.... pretended...that I was treating them to a night in a warm bed. With good food and lots of drink. After a particularly grungy quest. Deep Roads comes to mind.

The thing is, I just don't know what kind of traveling we're going to be doing in DA3.

Talking about rats....I'd like to have one as a pet in DA3.
Wonder if we're gonna have a mabari again.

My goodness. The ME team just ignores this kinda stuff outright. You can point right at the elephant in the room and they'll say, "I don't see nothin'. i don't know wat ur talkin' 'bout."

Not DA team. Interesting.

But is it wrong that I heard Laidlaw say that last line in the voice of an Elcor?

I do like having pets. I didn't get to have a mabari in DA2. didn't get that dlc.

From DA3 wiki

"Ray Muzyka, BioWare's CEO, said in an interview with Wired.com that Dragon Age III would be influenced by more open world games, such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which BioWare is "checking out aggressively." Also, the developers promised their fans that they will no longer reuse environments, which was considered a main issue in Dragon Age II."

I think that in DA3 our party will have 1 (or maybe several) bases of operation in each nation.  BIG one/s in Orlais, rogue one in Tevinter. Something like that. That will also mean that they will have different design. Maybe we'll be able to upgrade them by spending money or leaving/giving some forces or by giving/finding artifacts. The point...

Surviving possible surprise attack, gaining access to shops, new quests and other stuff.

I like your idea. In fact if we are able to travel more in DA3, I would prefer staying in inns and having neat stuff going on at the inns like cool coversations with followers, drinking contests, or playing cards or darts, than having a castle I can customize.

You mean one of those giant Korcari Wilds rats? I'd love to have one if I could bring it with me to important meetings and watch all the Orlesian nobles scream and faint.
I'd miss my Mabari though. And I can't imagine that we won't get one in DA 3, since he's basically an inexpendable part of Dragon Age.
If we could choose between a Mabari and...something cat-like (does DA have wildcats?) I'd choose the cat in a heartbeat. And while we're on the topic of a Mabari: PLEASE make him a proper companion again, even if he ends up taking a character slot. The dog seemed so much more important in DA:O than he was in DA 2.

This is what I've been thinking as well, maybe the castle is a base of operations for the Inquisition

Friendship maybe but romance, Oh no

I happen to recall a conversation between Alistair and Zevran after my warden and alistair's relationship got a bit more active. He told Alistair he'd been listening to our loving the previous night, outside the tent and it sounded like alistair got a good start but didn't quite live up to par.He then offered to teach Alistair some new positions or give him some herbs to increase his Vitality as if that was any business of his <_<

I think I'm good with thick sound proof medieval castle doors :P

I like having the Mabari as *spell* type of addition, not taking up a spot in my companion list.

Dog was a darn fine warrior, too. Darn fine. I did fret over him quite a bit, though.

I didn't take him on nearly as many missions as I should have because I would worry about him. Lol. I didn't want him to get hurt...Silly, I know. I could always revive him, but it just did something awful to me to see him get mauled by darkspawn.

And her I thought that was the fun part about sleeping in a tent surrounded by your other companions.
And whoever said castle doors are soundproof? I imagine there'll be a nice, loud echo in these big, drafty halls. Now that might cause quite an awkward silence at the breakfast table.

I was always the same way. I named Dog after my own dog who had passed away a few months before Origins released so I viewed Dog as more of a friend than a warrior.

Is it sad that the original dog was so overpowered it broke Origins for me the first time, and since then never use him because of that, except when fighting Flemeth?

Dog was overpowered? Surely you jest.

He was good in a fight, but not THAT good.
