When I run DAO it runs great with all settings maxed (except AA). But after a few minutes the game gets really choppy and laggy. If I completely shut down the game and start again, it runs fine, but the wholeprocess starts over. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and how they fixed it. It may not just be this game, it may be an actual computer problem. I am open to hearing suggestions and ideas.

I am running Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium , Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU     T9400  @ 2.53GHz, NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GS.

You may wish to use the 'Search' function in the future. It's there specifically to prevent creating multiple threads asking the exact same question.

The game's "memory leak" (though it's more a decaching issue) is well documented.

what he is describing is to soon for the memory bug to be causing it.

If you haven't dusted out your pc recently do that (make sure you dust out everything.) also try turning down the graphics to avoid building up excess heat, than try playing it again and see how far you get before it starts to degrade.

LunchBox, you could be having a heat issue.

Did you build this computer yourself or buy it in a store?

Heat issues can be cause by:

CPU fan stopped, or clogged,

No thermal grease between the CPU chip and the heat sink,

Graphics card fan failure or clogged with dust.

I had an Nvidia graphics card fail when the fan became stuck. It literally melted the plastic standoffs that held it on the card. It worked fine under "normal" Windows usage. When I installed other software that pushed it beyond what Windows does, it failed.

You're playing on a notebook... first - how much RAM does it have?

Second - are you sure it doesn't overheat? (as already mentioned by Mortiquendi)?

How much ram do you have rigged in your system.

x1000. I had the exact issue you're describing. It was driving me batty since by all accounts my PC should be a gaming powerhouse. I finally opened my tower case, and although everything LOOKED fine, I got some compressed air and went to town. Specifically, on my CPU and card fans. The card fan wasn't bad, but I was amazed at the huge dust bunnies that came out from deep within the CPU fan. When I booted the game up again, everything ran flawlessly at max settings. I tested it by throwing myself into the most intense battles I could find (ones with a lot of people on screen all fighting at once), and it ran like silk, whereas before it would chug and stutter on and off during even small battles. It even appears to have fixed the crackly sound effects issue I had... but I've said that before, so, eh.

But as far as FPS is concerned, absolutely clean your fans. It's amazing what gets stuck in there, and how much of an impact it can have on your performance.

Also, if durt is the issue, make sure your computer is up off the floor by 6 inches or so. This will reduce the amount of dirt sucked in.

I'm glad it fixed things for you.

You'd be surprised how many times we "techies" have told people this, and in reply we get "Your not listening, I want my game fixed, this is unacceptable"

They expect us to fix Bioware's software to work on their computer no matter what. It can't possibly be their computer at fault when "Everything else works just fine"

The floor is a terrible place for a PC in a home.  It's not so bad in an office, unless it's sitting on too thick of a pile (carpeting), which blocks the lip intake of most tower PCs.  Even if your pets are seldom inside, their dander and shed hair comes inside with you, and is really a problem for the cooling fins inside the system.

But even 3-4 inches up from the floor is a major improvement (a riser of some sort made from wood or bricks is easy to slip under it).

I have 4GB of DDR 2 Ram. I tried running it at all settings from the very lowest to the very highest. It had the same problem. It would run great at any setting for a few minutes, then get choppy and laggy. Also, the CPU is constantly at 100%. I've never had this problem before running any game. I play Oblivion, Fallout 3, Mirrors Edge, Assassins Creed, Prototype and others all at rather high settings.

Any game designed to take advantage of 2 or more cores will send your CPU usage to 100% it doesn't mean it's maxed out your CPU, just that it's "staking it's claim" to the max allowed to it in case it needs it.

Even a little indie game like Torchlight does this.

TBH, Vista Home Premium is probably THE worst OS to be running the newest games in. Anything that has "Home" in the name is gimped from the start. Even Windows 7, one of the big features of Win7 is that it has an entire version of XP built into it for backwards compatibility...except for the home versions, they gutted them. It really is worth the added expense to get the Professional versions of any of them, XP, Vista, or Windows 7.

But, be that as it may...what driver versions are you running? And have you checked the inside of your case to see if your having any of the heat issues we mentioned?

I had this same problem and just recently went into the troubleshooting thread. If you have a phenom quad processor, there is a tool that they have in that thread that helped fix my issues. I only got this working yesterday, so not sure if it has any other problems, but I would be able to play for about 5 minutes max before everything became laggy, which is what it sounds like you are experiencing. I had just switched up to windows 7 64 bit. I'll check back to see if you have a quad processor, and I believe it affect AMD people more, but if you don't, then not sure what else it could be myself.

Absolutely correcto mundo... It IS amazing how much crud can be sucked into your machine and just a few minutes of housekeeping can make a ton of difference.  Investing in a can of compressed air can be the least expensive way to put the zoom back in your machine.

I know it sounds nuts but the proof is in the tasting.

I opened my Laptop up, used some Dust Off, and cleaned that bad boy out. It was super clogged up. I can feel how much colder it is running, and I've been playing for about an hour and no slow down. You guys saved me and possibly my laptop if I had kept playing that way. Thank you very much.

Glad it worked for you.

I wish other poeple on this forum wouldn't be so stubborn to not try this out when people suggest it.
