Like the little says. Are mages born powerful? Do they train to become powerful? Where do special talents like "dreamer" come from? Is it inborn can it be learned? Or is it both?

There are some mages who are naturally more talented than others; some mages can barely manage a simple spell, while others show power typical of Hawke or the Warden. But they all require instruction in order to use their magic properly, or else their talents manifest in bizarre and dangerous ways. This is a principle known as arcanist derangement, and mages who never recieve training are at high risk of going insane.

Somniari are born with their abilities, though the fact that Feynriel is the first (known) dreamer in several generations suggests that it's tied to elven heritage. I say "known" because, according to Marethari, most dreamers simply die because their minds are too fragile.

Mages are born with a level of affinity to Arcane that defines their power. They train to control it's effects. Otherwise the can tear the Veil without knowing or hurt somebody. Dreamer talent is inborn, it cannot be taught. It's pure coincidence and very rare . You can't know which child is gonna be a dreamer.

Or more accurately, a dreamer is very rare because most don't survive.

So basically a mage is born with a set affinity to magic and can't go beyond his natural limits, but can only train to master those given limits?

Read the Cardinal Rules of Magic codex.

It talks about how a mage's mana is like a person's stamina. You can't go beyond what's there. But it can be built up.

So logically, a mage can exercise his magic to become more powerful, like a warrior building up his/her own stamina.

Like any other ability, mages start with a certain amount of talent and then can improve in strength and skill through diligent practice. Certainly Hawke and the Warden mages improve as they practice their craft. Also knowing how to get the most out of their magics by using their abilities strategically would doubtless increase their effective power beyond their initial potential.

@o.p., Have you played Origins and the magi Origin? If not, what are you waiting for?

^Very good point. Pretty much all of the mage origin revolves around magic, its use and its misuse - as indeed does DAII, I suppose.

The fact that most of them don't use deodorant.

Mages are powerful because the Kossith won't release Gatlock, and thus AK47s haven't been mass produced yet.

Indeed. They let fear run through their every orifice, their anger flows in fierly explosions, and they let loose their hate as they give in to the dark side!

So some mages can barely manage a simple spell?
Is there a "Biotic God" type character in Dragon Age series then?

Force is strong with this one. Not sure what this has to do with Dragon Age 2 though.

So isn't it the spirit realm that makes mages powerful?
That and doing deals with daemons to perform blood magic.
