First, I have to say, I am shocked, I am thorougly shocked.

What I want to know from you is, IS THIS MUSICAL MOVIE REALY POPULAR IN AMERICA?

Today I had my first peek on it, and me as an Austrian, I just can't imagine our country defined by this film.
It's just so wrong.

We had an native speaker in our english lesson today, and in the course of the unit, we came across what stereotypes we have about them, and their stereotypes about us. And he told us, most americans derive anything they think to know about Austria from this movie.
Is that really true? Are there people out there that think every austrian meal ends with a "strudl"?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hedy Lamarr was Austrian. When Austria is mentioned she comes to mind. Hitler is, too.

Apart from that, I don't do stereotypes. I can't if I tried.

*sniff* I love that musical. And I thought Austria was beautiful. But I would like to think that we Americans are a little more sensible than to base all of our ideals on what we get from movies. All I gathered from Austria from that musical was that it had a gorgeous countryside.

In all seriousness, The Sound Of Music is a classic mainly because of Julie Andrews movie. (Although, I heard it's interesting see it in Broadway).

Yes, many Americans like the Sound of Music. No, we don't actually think that's what Austria is like anymore than we think the UK is like Mary Poppins.

Image IPB You have SO shattered my illusions of the UK.  No flying with umbrellas?  No jumping into watercolors on the sidewalk?  No...no dancing chimney sweeps?  I am so disappointed...

No unfortunatly none of that happens on the island :crying:
Though to be fair I'd be tempted to pay someone to try and leap into a watercolour.
As to the topic I havn't watched The sound of music in years but I never assumed Austria was like that any more than I'd asssume the US was all CSI or Deadly Police Crashes With Axes 5!! :D

The movie is also nothing like the accounts of Maria or the Von Trapp family, but hey why let facts get in the way of a wholesome, family film.

The sad part is I know all the lyrics of each song. They are burned into my temporal lobe for ALL ETERNITY.

I've already done that with my kids. We used chalk on the sidewalk and the tried to jump in. Just a hint...it doesn't work if you're not magic.Image IPB

So how much is that worth to you?Image IPB

Another drawback or benefit from being a Mom. I can recite almost EVERY Disney song there is...especially if it's from The Little Mermaid or Jungle Book...

It's just a fault of media in general, I suppose. Some movies have more than unloaded their fair share of misperceptions, tropes, cliches and stereotypes onto the public. Some people believe them, some don't, but those tropes by themselves can be pretty distorting and it's disturbing when it carries off onto real-life attitudes. I mean - bloody hell, Asia isn't just China or Japan, and NOT ALL ASIANS KNOW KUNGFU. That one bugs me more than anything else, because I've been egged on about it in real life. But not everyone is like that anyhow.

Perhaps fortunatly I can recall only 1 or 2 songs from the sound of music...disney on the other hand will haunt my soul for all time.

Yes. Some know Muay Thai.

And then there is Karate. And Taekwondo. And jui-jitsu. And all kinds of stuff that all Asian people know to beat up unsuspecting foreigners. And they learn it in ancient temples and always greet you with a wise "Buddha Bless You".

Not to mention, you are ALL geniuses at math. And bad drivers when you come to America.

/Stereotypes suck. No one is ever surprised when I say I do statistical modeling, they just assume I was born knowing probability. And I am also considered Asian here...go figure.

Stereotyping can be such a hateful thing.

Although its all about the inputs we faced day to day in our formative years it seems just so damn insular to take things like a race/group/society solely on the word of others and popular views.

I suppose what I'm getting at is that its not a great distance between a assumed stereotype and casual racism neh?

I would disagree. For me, one equates ignorance, while the other is hate. But then, I haven't been on the recieving end of either, so what would I know.

I make a lousy Brit anyway. I don't drink tea.

I always get The Sound of Music confused with Bedknobs and Broomsticks or Mary Poppins. I like Bedknobs and Broomsticks better.

Nor are all of them incredably geeky and good at science/math.

BTW: I've seen your picture now and decided you're 19.

Kind of like when slumdog millionaire came out and people started to blast 'jai Ho' from their stereos and expected me to enjoy the music because I was an Indian.
