I prefer to keep him soft, make Anora queen and go rebuild the Wardens as my happy ending, but my true ending is where I am dead, and my love rules wisely remembering how awesome I was and being a kick-ass king to live up to the ideal I set for him. Seriously, it is the happiest ending for the world at large, I am convinced me and the other 4 Grey Wardens who ended the Blights will be resurrected when the Maker comes home to light the hearth fires ala the Tevinter statue... Maybe it is a dream, but it is a good dream.

Indeed, and I certainly respect that. :D

But considering that loosing a person that you love is worse than dying, it just fells really wrong to do this to Alistair.

The answer, of course, is not to have a romance with Alistair to begin with; but even doing that will either put a ruthless ruler on the throne (look at how the Elves live) -- and she can't even have children --, or force Alistair to do something he never wanted to do in the first place...

I just would like to not feel caught between a rock and a hard place.Image IPB

Actually I think that both Anora and Alistair are poor choices. Anora for the very important reason that you mention and Alistair partially because that royal line is weak and he is a grey warden, therefore, not likely to have children. Either option makes it likely that the direct line will fail.

Having a good heart can easily be confused with being weak; but Alistair is not weak, I assure you. Just look at how he reassures Sir Jory in the beginning, or how he leads the army in the end. It's that kind of attitude that wins the heart of the people and gives them the courage to face what may come.

And as to the continuation of the Theirin line, that's what Cailan's illegitimate child is/woud be there for... Well, that would work, wouldn't it? Or just make Eamon's brother king: Eamon's influence will win out on the people and that man is young; all he needs is a nice wife and voilà! Image IPB

I think that the Teagan could be an effective candidate for king. If he can trace his lineage to Calenhad, all the better.

Hehe, indeed Image IPB

I am reading David Gaider's novels atm. (I'm nearing the end of The Stolen Throne) so perhaps I'll learn something there... In any case, the books are very good, lots of action and it's nice to learn of what happened
before "Origins". Can't wait to start "The Calling"!

The Theirin bloodline is enough reason to put Alistair on the throne. It is a reminder to Ferelden of Calenhad Theirin, who united a group of squabbling clans into the Ferelden that we know today. If it wasn't for the Theirin, Ferelden wouldn't exist.

In recent memory, it was Maric Theirin who drove the Orlesians out, regaining independence for Ferelden.

The Theirin bloodline must continue if possible. It's a powerful symbol, that has moved me to ensure Alistair takes the throne whether he likes it or not. I would be there to support him as friend.

Even if you put Alistair on the throne how likely is it that he will produce an heir? So again Ferelden will be confronted with a succession crisis and the failure of the direct royal line. If the crown is granted to a relative then the line of Calenhad can be continued, presumably with someone more likely to provide an heir.

The Theirin line is a powerful symbol indeed, but Alistair is not the right candidate; a bastard of Cailan perhaps would be. I think that would be the best option, with Eamon as regent until the lad/lass is of age.Image IPB

Alistair can have heirs if he has them with a non-Grey-Warden woman. It is low, but it is very possible. He would just have to keep trying.

Alistair can never have children naturally if he tries to have them with a Grey-Warden woman.

So in my scenario, it is possible for Alistair to have a heir. The heir will also be free of the taint.

My sources are from the Lead Writer, David Gaider himself.

Well Alistair says that, of all the Grey Wardens that he knew, all of them who had children had fathered them before their joining.

But that aside, Alistair does not want to be king; and thus should not be.
Much of his story is about Duncan being the first person who ever cared about what he wanted, thus making us want to be the second, no?
At least, I do.Image IPB

There is just too much emphisism that was put on his having been thrown around as a lad, for me to ignore what he wants now.

Thread title keeps making me think of "The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny."

Good guys, bad guys, and explosions
as far as the eye can see
And only one will survive
I wonder who it will be

This is the ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny.

As for Alistair and the royal line. I'd be all for deception. Because lying to people is fun. Hell, he's royalty, he should get the practice in. Adopt.

That's the spirit!  And when he has your head removed and your child exiled so that the son he secretly had with the Shale can get on the throne with no problem...

See, it is all good. Your kid does not have to live in Ferelden, and no head so you cut on expenses for haircuts.

LOL!!

Naa, my Alistair is too soft to do that. Besides, with my coercion and cunning I'll be able to convince him that it's all for the sake of Ferelden and has *nothing* to do with needing Teagan time at all, I'll probably even get a +5 approval for putting the country's needs before my own....

See this is where I think you are wrong.  Deep down Alistair does want to be king.  He's just had that idea beaten out of him all his life, to the point where he has a hard time accepting it himself at first.  He was practically programmed to reject the idea from the day he was born so there wouldn't be a war of succession.  However, if in the game you "harden" him he happily accepts becoming king.  He not only accepts it, but he dedicates himself to learning how to be a good king, giving it everything he's got.  Think about what you do when you harden him.  You convince him that, at least occasionally, he should go after what he wants and not what he thinks others want.

So, I would agrue that if your PC really did care about and get to truly know Alistair and what he really wanted (what people say they want and what they really want are often not the same thing) then you should make him king.  If your PC really thinks Alistair doesn't want to be king then she simply doesn't know the man she loves as well as she thinks she does.

You don't have to leave Allistair to defend the gates to sacrifice yourself. I'm not sure exactly what I did, but I was able to sacrifice myself with Allistair in my group at the end.

I had myself, Allistair, Leliana, and Wynne at the end. I had Allistair's favorable rating at 90 something, and Leliana's up to 100. I laid with Leliana, and Allistair would have if I let him. My character is female.

At the end, I told Allistair that I would sacrifice myself. It was, however, apparent in the dialogue that he did "love" me. I asked him something like "Isn't there some OTHER reason you want to sacrifice yourself".  And he basically said it was because he cared for me so much... etc..

The dialogue was sweet and very subtle. I found it interesting that Allistair was in love with me, even though I was obviously hitched with a woman.

Did I just type that? lol

If you had been in a relationship with him and licked his lamp post you can't stop him from doing it no matter what options you choose.

What do you think all this talk about "hardening" really is?
