Companion approval system

In Origins, I loved that you could get characters to actively hate you, quit the party, even attack you. It made much more sense than mistreating your DA2 characters at every turn but still having them stand by you.
However, I also liked that you could disagree with companions in DA2 but still have a relationship of some sort.
Ideally DA3 would be a mix, with more than one axis on which 'friend points' were scored. But if you've ever done any work in a dialogue editor, you'd know that keeping track of all that would be monumentally difficult. Suddenly you go from something like "If Friendship > 50 then goto 5; else goto 6" to "if Friendship > 50 AND Respect > 50 goto 5; if Friendship > 50 AND Respect < 51 goto 6; if Friendship < 51 AND Respect > 50 goto 7; else goto 8". That's potentially double the dialogue lines, double the coding, double the VA, and Maker knows how many dialogue flags to keep track of the results.
Although it'd be awesome if someone ever pulled it off.

This idea, i like it. Another!CrustyBot wrote...

For the extremes, you could have:
(X) + (Y) = Admiration
(-X) + (Y) = Rivalry
(X) + (-Y) = Attachment
(-X) + (-Y) = Loathing
Or something.

DA2's was good for gameplay, bad for the story. If I go killing every mage in Kirkwall, WHY DO ANDERS/MERILL HELP ME?
The flaw was in something else, not the friend/rival system. Also, it's hard to track that when every random mob has a mage, and there are hardly any 'peace' options on them.

However, you can be just upright disrespectful and a total jerk to your companions - Hawke can do things that, frankly if I was someone who traveling with them (and, in essense, putting my safety at risk each time I went with them), I would pretty much yell at them and leave for good. For example, why in the world does Anders strick around with Hawke, if Hawke hunts down and shows no mercy to mages, doesn't care about anything he says, and also berates him?
I also really hated how you could end up sitting there without the correct amount of friendship/rivarly points with your companions to get their quests. I was trying to romance Fenris on one of my playthroughs, but I was kind to him, but disagreed with his thoughts on mages. I was left without the 50 friendship/rivarly to get his last personal quest in Act 2, and was unable to continue his arc without loading a previous save.
On the bright side, you can disagree with your companions, and not get an approvel hit from it.
I'd honestly like to see a bit of a hybrid system, though I'm not totally sure how it could be implamented. But something like "rivarly" and "friendship," but then "respect" and "hate."
Like for Fenris, rivarly can be gained from siding with mages, but respect can be gained from him by being compassionate. Obviously they could use a rename here and there, but the general function of them staying the same, if that makes sense.

If the feature I mentioned in my post on the previous page was in the game, being nice to him would simply give rival points if you're rivalling him. So that'd solve your problems.Cerah wrote...

I liked it that they would stay royal but treat you as nemesis!
And I loved rivalmaces(with the spicey rough loving) and doveymances(with the soft and flaming loving) too.
My argo bloodmage wasn't forever alone anymore.

I want this one.
This way we get angry companions who don't necessarily want to
Also, I want Origins' idle chit chatter back. I don't want every talk to be deep and meaningful because, to be honest, these aren't the ones that me me fall in love with every aspect of the characters.

Agreed. I hope we in DA3 get a party where they don't hate each other.Elfman wrote...

Honestly from a psychological viewpoint i just can't imagine Fenris or Anders putting their life at stake for each other or even for Merrill.
Alistair and Morrigan didn't like each other, but they respected that they both were working towards the same goal.
Perhaps a unified goal is what DA3 needs for the party to make sense again.

I don't think I like the idea of buying friends.. many will be very cheap and we know what happen when we buy cheap things.. they brake faster and you have to buy another soon after.

I really like this. Never did quite understand the friendship/rivalry. Such as, why would someone who is a rival stay in the group unless they share a common goal like defeating the blight. A system like this would fix that. Don't think it fits in Bioware's view of streamlining the franschise but one can hope.
