I probably made a post about this some time ago, but in case i didn't i had to point this out again to Bioware, and hopefuly this will be implemented, now that they starting voice overs(tweeted, i think by David).

Since we are getting voiced protagonist, and hopefuly with a proper name. We should use three names for it.

This is to prevent such things like in family being called by a last name.

Typical example is this :

Isabella:  "Hey, Hawke come to bed!" <----- w t f !? When would ever a girl/wife call you into bed by your last name???

So to prevent this, we should have three names, which actually would also fit into Orlei setting.

Like, my cousin daughter is called *Kira Franchesca*.

So you would have - *Kira Franchesca Hawke*

Name Kira(First name) and Hawke(Last name) would be set by game. And the Franchesca (the second name) would be chosen by player. The full name would still be used on letters, messages, or other written content(like name of Saves for each character), but in family/friends you would be called by your first name.

So it woul be like this:

Isabella: Hey, Kira come to bed!

Yeah, no thank you. That just makes the character that much less yours, which was a huge letdown with DA2. I could care less about Hawke - I care about my Warden.

If anything, I'm okay with the surnames... I think it would have been kind of nice to have surnames used a bit more in Origins, but I was okay with just "the Warden," "Warden," "The Grey Warden," "You," "her/him" or whatever. I just hope with DA3, we'll be able to choose our race again. I want the PC to be mine again.

How was Hawke any different from your character in Origins?  Both were given a fixed last name and a suggested first name, which you could change.  Exactly the same.  Only difference was that there was only one origin in DA2, so they could actually use your last name to refer to you instead of a title like "warden".  DA2 was much more satisfactory to me in that regard.

Plenty of people I know use their last names, and refer to me by mine. It's really not that weird. Actually, using all three names seems more off putting, as that was always used when I was in trouble. However YMMV.

I would prefer they give us a list of names to choose from

If they provided 3 options per gender, they would have 6 unique names to voice.

Thanks, but no thanks. I'd rather not have the protag's name restricted, and I'm perfectly okay with being called by a title (Warden) or last name (Hawke).

Honestly, I don't call my wife by her name, ever. Last name OR first name.

Usually its a pet name or honey or babe or something. That would be more believable. My wife and I have even talked about how it is weird for us to even say each other's name to each other these days - its more familiar for us to say something else.

Plus - restricting names is bad, m'kay?

This was almost exactly what I was going to say. They took away my ability to choose race. The least they could do is let me choose my character's first name. And I agree I liked my Warden much more then Hawke.

Meh.. Anders called me Hawke and I called him Anders because his family came from the Anderfells. Fenris was called Leto and only got named Fenris by his slave master. Who cares about last name first name ? Any is fine.

I used to call my ex by his last name rather than his first. He introduced himself by his last name, so that's what I would call him lol.

When does your wife/girl really use your name at all? Especially when you're the only one in the room?

She'd just say "Come to bed." or maybe a pet name like "Honey, come to bed."

Honestly as much of the name as possible should be in the player's hands. Its unrealistic to have anyone use your name every damn sentence. Its usually pretty obvious who someone is talking to.

Multiple names being forced on the player is completely unecessary.

Some people go by their last names, especially if they don't like their first names. Or they go by a nickname-version of their last name, like "Mack" (short for Mackey or McMahanon or what have you.)

I had no problems with "Hawke" whatsoever.

I find that it has become a trademark of games (especially Bioware's) with a voiced protagonist for the other characters to use the protagonist's last name in spoken dialog.

To me, it is better than restricting to a list of first names. If they are going to go with a first name, just pick one single character for everyone to play instead.

I don't prefer the latter, but they should do something right or not do it at all. Currently, last names seems to be the most preferable to me for customized characters. Otherwise, just forget customization.

It is really up to the name and titles the writers decide on. I think Commander and Shepard work a lot better than Champion and Hawke. I find Hawke to be an unbelievable name.

I would rather DA names stick with what we saw in DAO, names like Amell, Cousland, Surana, Tabris and Aeducan. Believable names that don't sound like they are trying to be flashy.

Nope, Hawke was already bad enough. It was OBVIOUSLY only supposed to work for default Hawke. To make up for it I always give my Hawke's appropriate first names. But...no one notices my hard work. *real thug tears*

Give the protagonist a defaul name, I have no problem with that whatsoever, I really dislike people calling my character "Warden". Hawke was good enough too but it was weird because Hawke is his/her last name.

If those leaks are true and we do end up as "The Inquisitor" I'm hoping people won't keep refering to him/her as "Inquisitor" all the time, especially the companions... for some reason it kinda reminds me of the Terminator lol.

Hopefully the protagonist will have a decent Surname that people will refer to him/her as, or a nickname that he/she goes by (kinda like how James Vega calls Shepard Lola or Loco depending on your gender.)

I vote for default name. I am so tired when everyone calls me Warden or Hawke. Name used only in letter it is so strange and irritating.

They could get away with using the PC's name a lot less anyway; people referring to Hawke by last name didn't bother me until everyone was doing it all the time. It was as though someone accidentally added an extra 0 to the quantity when they were ordering "Hawke"s and the writers were just trying to shift them.

In my experience names are mostly just used if you're talking about the person to someone else or you're trying to get someones attention, dropping the name on the end of sentences like "Thank you, Hawke" isn't really necessary, and when using the last name just calls attention to how the character has a first name but the game can't use it for mundane development reasons I'd think they ought to avoid it as much as possible anyway.
