Yesterday, I started a new ME3 game with an imported character. And on Mars, after you've access to a weapon bench for the first time, I noticed that I cannot modify submachine guns.

I only had the Ultralight Materials mod at that time, but I should have been able to modify the SMG with it. Either Shep's gun or Liara's SMG wasn't available for modifying. Now, on the Normandy's weapon bench, the problem still exists. I can modify the other guns (SR, SG, HP, AR) but no SMG.

Changes... hm, I am not sure whether the problem already occured after the Firefight DLC or after the Origin update. It worked fine before.

Anyone else with this problem?

I'm having the same problem lately except I cant mod any weapon with the mods I found on Mars.

I don't have the Firefight DLC.

Thx for the confirmation.

Hm, it worked fine on my first two characters weeks ago - as in: I could modify the SMG on Mars back then. I will wait for the next SMG mod (should be either Turian Platoon on Tuchanka or Krogan Team on Utukku) and try again.

This has come up before (you can see the previous thread here).

For some reason, after Patch 1.0.3 and/or the extended cut, the first two mods on Mars (ultralight materials and scope) don't always unlock the upgrade correctly, so when you encounter the weapon bench, you don't actually have any upgrades (you may have picked up the mods, but the corresponding upgrade didn't actually unlock).

You'll actually miss out on those two upgrades (they won't count as "missed", so they won't show up in the Spectre terminal), so you may be unable to get both of those two upgrades up to Level 5 in a single playthrough.

I'm not aware of any workaround. If you have an earlier save, you may want to try playing through Mars again to see if they unlock the second time through.

(I searched for the wrong word on the forum so thank you for the link to the previous thread.)

Maybe I should have been faster with finishing ME2. Patch please. :)

add: Great idea. :D Now, I only have to play a few missions again, but... a working weapon mod is a working weapon mod. I did change the weapon to M-4 Shuriken this time when I found it. Just to be safe, to have a standard weapon equipped. I changed it at the weapon bench. Initially, I used the N7 SMG for Liara and Shep. But it's still odd. The first time around, it did show - in the pop-up window - the Scope when I picked it up but not the Ultralight Materials. No modify option. This time, it showed both on pick-up.

add 2: the Sniper Rifle Spare Thermal Clip found on Palaven also did not unlock. Here's to restarting the mission.

Okay, since for me the issue comes up and up again, I decided to push this thread a little.

First things first. I cannot de-install, re-install the game. I cannot play without a patch because I need at least patch 1.01 for obvious reasons (Win XP; my recently bought graphics card may now push the game above minimum specs but I highly doubt that). And patches are not available as single. It would automatically update to 1.03.

I am currently playing Grissom Academy for the fifth time. Completely rebooted the mission through the Restart Mission save. While after the second time at least Mods 1 to 3 (AR Stability, SMG Heat Sink, AR Precision) unlock, Mod 4 does not! (SR Piercing)

Background: after release and patch to 1.01 I imported a character from ME2 that had played through ME2 one time. No problem. Patch 1.02 - no problem noticed. By the time that patch 1.03 came up, the character had finished ME3 and was imported and had all mods. So there were no mods to pick up in the game.

In the meantime, I had finished the character's second playthrough in ME2 (imported ME2 character in ME2, then finished again). I started a new ME3 game, importing the recently finished ME2 character. Before, I deleted other existing ME3 careers because having three John careers is confusing. This new character has problems with unlocking mods. I played Mars twice, Palaven twice, N7: Cerberus Lab only once (thank God), but Grissom Academy now five times.

Atm, I blame it on patch 1.03. You made so many weapon fixes in it that maybe...

Thx for your attention.

Yes, it's been coming up a bit lately, and apparently it's a general issue in 1.0.3 that some mods will not correctly unlock the corresponding upgrade.

Hopefully the next patch can fix this.
