Alright, this will probably spark a debate, but it can't be helped. I was in the process of writing a fan story (for my own amusement, although I had considered posting it when it was finished) and I was met with an argument that I don't agree with. Before I bother posting the story for others to read, I figured I would get a look at the opinions of some of my fellow Dragon Age gamers and see what you think.

The disagreement was pertaining to a slave being owned in Kirkwall. My theory is that someone who had money and influence (like a noble) might be able to get away with, or at least could be better at hiding ownership of a slave in the city. The argument the other player gave me was that "Slavery is illegal in Kirkwall". While I understand that it's illegal in that city, and not accepted in other places BESIDES Tevinter, my argument was that people get away with illegal actions here in our own country. Who's to say that someone couldn't get away with it in Kirkwall, given enough influence, or being smart enough to keep things close to the vest? My other point that I made is that you are constantly fighting slavers throughout the game. They can't ALL be getting taken to Tevinter. They have to be going other places. The entire idea that 'it can't happen because it's illegal' is something I don't entirely agree with, but I figured I would start a discussion and see what other players think.

While slavery is illegal in  Kirkwall, you can add Orana to your household staff and never make any mention of paying her, which is tantamount to slavery.

Could a noble stroll through Hightown leading some elven slave around with a leash? That might be a little too brazen. But if they were kept out of public view … I've no doubt that some of the worse nobles keep sex slaves.

I should note that Orlais also condones slavery, though they dress it up by surrounding their "unpaid servants" with wealth and opulence.

You're right in that many modern countries today oppose slavery and yet people in effect "keep" slaves ... usually in the form of sex slaves or unpaid household workers (a non-English speaking maid in America, for example). These people are severely disenfranchised and may also be afraid to contract authorities.

So hell yeah, you could write that happening in Kirkwall.

Plus, since it's fanfiction, you could pretty much write whatever the hell you want, and the dissenters can go fcuk themselves lol

I hate it when people quibble about fanfiction. IT'S FANFICTION, DUDE. Good read something else if it bothers you.

Well, the person I was talking to happens to be dead set on canon storyline. Like, you can't create an original character to get involved with a character from the original story. Even IF there is a reason why they might choose that person over their other option. Example: Hawke romances Isabella, which leaves Fenris without a canon option.

I didn't have the DLC's, so I've only been able to go by what I've read in the Wikia for Dragon Age and Dragon Age 2. I haven't read up on Orlais much yet, so that's good to know! Thanks! That just further adds to my argument. :)

Slavery is illegal, so is blood magic. People can keep a lot of secrets behind a close door. So am pretty sure that slaves are in Kirkwall just as blood mages were living in Kirkwall, but it will always come to the light eventually.

I owned a slave in DA2. My only problem was I couldn't... take advantage. ;)

yeah, I love how Fenris kinda does the 'oh... well... that's good' thing. Like 'I just freaked out for no reason, let me try and play it off like nothing happened'. LOL

I know, right?  Everytime he does something like that (and he does it a LOT) I want to ask him, 'How do toes taste, Fenris?'Posted Image
