Once you reach level 20 with a class, you have the option to "promote" them. This resets the class to level 1, increases your N7 rating and increases your galactic readiness in single player. Since N7 rating doesn't really matter that much, there is no tangible benefit to promoting, other than stroking your e-peen with a high N7 rating.

way wrong
promoting helps on saving respec cards and i'm sure your build was so perfect the 1st time, but what the hell you might want a lil change to your game play so promote and change it. No wonder people are getting bored playing with the same build this whole time :( and its kinda fun playing with a lvl7 and not a powered up 20 all the time

.

There are 36 characters to pick from, and respec cards are pretty common. You can also change things up a lot through weapon and gear selection. You also almost never see a character lower than the high teens in gold or platinum, so if you mostly play those difficulties you'll have to drop down to bronze or silver to level up after you promote. That means fewer credits, not much more challenge if any, and fewer powers to play with.

not always true. if you play with friends that are good, you can play gold with a level 1. I happen to have a high N7 rating and very, very rarely get kicked with a level 1 on gold with randoms. I never play bronze or silver unless i need less than 90,000 to promote. I try not to waste xp in the game.

people 'promote" the class (level 20) into the single player game. promoting also resets your class to level 1. this type of play requires skill in leveling up your character again and again. promoting also increases your N7 rating. Those that dont promote dont reap the benefits of 1. higher N7 rating, 2. playing at a level 1 again 3. using the exp from the matches.
A lot of people cry and whine about promoting/not promoting. Dont listen to any of them. play the game however you want.

Can you please expand on that?

What does promoting in multiplayer have to do with the single player campaign.

I thought Galactic Readiness was the only shared factor.

That is what i meant...war assets

I personally don't understand people that constantly promote because I find it boring and tedious to constantly start over with no real benefits. When I see someone with a N7 of over 1000, I usually go what the heck is wrong with that person?

Was in a game last night on Silver with a guy who had 6000+ N7 rank.  He had maxed out Shurikan and Avenger.  Level 1 Human Male Soldier.  He was the host.

Would you kick him/leave or stay in the game?

I stayed in the game.  The guy got the top score against others who had Piranhas, Harriers, Typhoons, etc.

I don't know what that means as I do believe N7 rank doesn't mean as much as people think, but some people are just really that good.  The guy never bragged, but was polite on the intercom letting me know a brute was behind me.

I was hosting a random gold game the other day and an N7 67 or so guy entered the lobby. He was using a kroguard leveled barely into the teens, with a level 3 avenger, no consumables, and level 1 gear that didn't fit his build particularly well. The other two guys in the lobby had N7s in the high 1000s or low 2000s though, so I was pretty sure we could carry him if necessary. I checked the scoreboard a few waves in and he was right behind me in second place, well ahead of the other two players.
I was using a GI with a hurricane and saber, and high level consumables and gear, and I'm pretty sure the other two guys were using an MQI and GI.

Of course shortly after that he vanguard glitched and spent the rest of the match floating around the LZ, one of the high N7s dropped, and me and remaining guy had to duo the rest of the match. Would've been interesting to see how things turned out though.

Only good thing from promoting characters is the extra war assets in single player. Eventually you'll be able to skip all the mindless and monotones pickup quests and focus on the "real" story.

Or edit a NPC' data file to give you 50k war assets instead of 5 war assets.

I really don't think it matters whether you promote or not. A lot of people who have been playing since launch promoted because they were sick of getting useless character cards and promoting at least gave some small benefit . Then there was the promotion weekend where most promoted just to help out with the goal. No real incentive or reason to promote now unless you run out of respec cards and want to rebuild. I have never kicked a player because of N7 rating although if you turn up on Platinum with crap weapons and no equipment AND a low N7 then you are pushing your luck

I promote only when I feel like I really need to respec. I doubt I'll clear N7 300 for at least another month.

Promoting doesn't help at all with respec cards. Once I use one of the three i get it in my next PSP.
