It can exist without Shepard. Would it be anywhere near as good? NO! If they did make a ME4 that didn't have Shepard I would give it a shot but I doubt it would be half as good as the Mass Effect Trilogy we know.

I could easily play a ME game without being Shep. I cannot play a prequel ME game.

Give me a sequel or bury this franchise and start a new one.

the more important question should be does mass effect deserve to survive without shepard? i don't think so. i'd buy it tho. thats what makes it so bl...y annoying. They were doin so well with ME1 & 2 and then along comes 3 and leaves you with a sick feeling in your stomach.

Then you get some bioware rep being quoted as saying that the fans WANT day one DLC.... You really couldn't make it up.

A prequel would be a step in the wrong direction

It can and it should. Shepard's story arc is about as complete as it gets, there's no way, if he is alive, the alliance would keep him on as a front line soldier. I'm interested and looking forward to building up a new character with new relationships, and a few new relationships with familiar faces.

It wouldn't be fitting to the Mass Effect universe, as rich as it is, to keep Shepard as the central figure.

To me I think that's the biggest shame of the way shep is sacrificed. It felt like his/her death should have been more in the heat of battle, with friends and squad mates around. When they died, their body would be taken and buried, and then there'd be a monument. whatever we did in the universe would help shape any future games and it'd feel like it mattered. With the way the series ended, I don't feel that.

I do think the series could technically go on without Shepard, but without some kind of closure there, it would feel very weird.

I do suspect that any games set in the future will in some way refer back to Shepard though, in an attempt to give us that closure.

Would agree on this, felt the ignominious end to our Shepards was a slap in the face to a character we worked on and loved for 5 years, ME could go on but would it have the same draw as the first series had? hard to see how, knowing how they treated our Sheps would make it hard to trust and put that much emotion into another protagonist knowing how Shep ended.

If BW's writers can write a good story and put in some lovable characters then im sure it's possible.

It's a good setting, you just need a good stroy/stories and good content, and allow people to get some "Player Agency".... The parts that people feelt they could influence, they just loved it, the parts that were thrown in their face and pushed down their throats were less popular...

As much as I love Shepard, I can easily play without her. Mass Effect is may be Shepard's story, but the Mass Effect universe can have more games with different characters. As long as the characters are good and the games are worth playing.

They could do Shepard's long lost brother by the same name.

Let me play as another race already.

Shep is cool and all, but I have more of an attachment to the characters around him.

The only thing I'll regret is not having TIM there to screw up my plans to save the galaxy.

Of course. If you keep on using the same protagonist again and again, the games will eventually just become stupid.

Mass Effect can definitely exist without Shepard. We don't even have to invent that many new characters, just make a stealth-based game focusing on Thane and his past as an assassin.

They can call it Mass Effect: Drell Revolution.

I could easily play an ME game without shep, as long as tis neither a prequel or a sequel, more of an ME:TNG if you will, ide happily give that a go.

Yes. But I wouldn't want to read a Harry Potter book with out Harry and the something goes with Shepard it would feel empty with out Shep.

I think that mass effect can exist without shepard as long as there is an amazing story to back up this new character. For example, In Star Wars after the empire is destroyed and the rebel alliance wins, there is really no big threat that exists. In many of the expanded universe stories, they have the characters chasing after remnants and broken down pieces of the former empire and it is pretty leads to a really boring story. It causes you to question "Why are they even doing this? The empire, emperor, and everyone else has been destroyed...what is this purpose of this story?"

So in order for mass effect 4 to work there has to be a good reason why they are introducing this new character(if they are indeed thinking of a continuation instead of a prequel). If we are gonna be chasing after a lone reaper that got away I think i'll pass on buying the game.

Ah, you're thinking of:

The body may heal, but the mind is not always so resistant.

-William Taggart

Great lines, the both of them.

Oh god, brings back memories of that awesome CGI trailer Deus Ex HR got.
"They cannot stop us Adam.... they cannot stop the future..."
Btw he says "resiliant" I think, not resistant
