Leliana says she disagreed with her cloister sisters, but I find it hard to believe. After all, she lived with them for a few years, but she will turn against you if you do a certain thing (you know what I mean, right?). Attacking your friend because he destroys a thing important for your belief seems a lot like religious zealot to me.

Andrastean religions seem to sidestep the whole sex issue entirely.

Yet cloister people are forbidden to have sex. (Lelianna says that in Lothering, Lily comes in trouble for being with Iowan....). So while the chantry doesnt seem to be as bad-ass about it as the medieval catholic church, it is certainly not completely open-hearted about Sex.

Wait...back up...Cloister people are not forbidden to have sex...no where does it say that. Those becoming Cloister people are not allowed to have sex as they go through it because they are to be married to the Maker, then after that...they are allowed to have sex.

@Dahelia: Leliana says that they are "caste" and that this made them more attractive because "the forbidden fruit is the sweetest". I understood this as "they are not allowed to have sex because of their vows", am I wrong with that?

So once they are married with the Maker they are allowed to cheat on him? Sounds funny. I think I might start to like the chantry after all^^

Ah, but I wanted to dream of Shianni, not argue about religion......

Not that surprising, remember the whole Andrastean religion is basically based on adultery (Andraste becoming the bride of the Maker despite already being married to what's-his-face chief guy).

Dragon Age Wiki

The Chantry
According to the Chant of Light, Andraste
had a spiritual marriage with the Maker. All Andrastian priests are
symbolically wedded to the Maker; they cannot marry, but are not
required to be celibate.
In the eyes of the Chantry, marriage is a
matter of tradition and practicality, and a holy bond between man and
woman. Love is not necessary, but love within marriage is the ideal.
Other than that, the Chantry has few regulations regarding sexuality.
The Chantry does not have divorce, but a marriage can be annulled.

You have got to love the Chantry more now lol

Note the part "between man and woman"? So obviously they ARE opposed to homosexuality.
Besides of that, reality and idea might differ (like they did in the medieval church). At least the templars seem to have an rather old-fashioned approach to sexuality (looking at Cullen and Alistair here).

Actually Alistair's Conversations point to the fact that he may swing both ways( Have you ever licked a laaaamppost in the winter?*more dialogue*I haven't had the pleasure, personally).

Word over the net is that he was intended, but the feature was cut late in developement

Lol yeah but here is something on homosexuality

Dragon Age Wiki

Homosexuality
The majority of Fereldans consider same-sex relations odd, but not immoral, while Orlesians consider it a quirk of character.

The Chantry also condicts itself by saying "between man and woman" and then going on to say "the Chantry has few regulations regarding sexuality."

Actually that is an easter egg...I believe going towards "A Christmas Story" in which a child did lick a lamp post....but also it happened in Scooby Doo, Shaggy I believe did it as well.

Here's a link to the sourcematerial for the wiki entry.
(interview with the Lead Writer, so this is considered to be the "word of god" regarding this matter)

So I'd say the average Fereldan/Thedasian is more open-minded about (******)sexuallity then the average Earthling. :)

@ Dahelia:
I surrender. Can´t argue with a Wiki. They know everything.:(
Let me just say that I got another feeling from the game. Though I admit that I might be biased because of the Catholic Church. I have always seen the Chantry as the Fereldan version of the Church, and we all know their feelings towards homosexuality.....

Author's intent always irritates me, but in this case it makes sense. Marriage for love and status in society (for recieving benefits, adoption rights, divorce rights, etc.) is a modern concept.

In a medieval era marriage is for procreation, to carry on family names and political benefit, thus gay marriage serves no purpose.

This doesn't indicate any attitude against gay relationships, simply that the Chantry isn't going to endorse an entirely purposeless action.

"Quote: 7) Gay marriage?
No. Not to get political on the subject, but regardless of my support for the idea of gay marriage in our society I think it would feel pretty anachronistic to include such a concept in our setting. I doubt it's something that would even occur to people in Thedas, regardless of their orientation. "

The Chantry carries the same foibles of any organised religion, it can be oppressive, it can persecute people, it's adherence to rigid, absolute dogma.
But it's very much different than the Catholic church or any real world Abrahamic religion. Not least because it's matriarchal instead of patriarchal and highly misogynist. It also carries aspects more in tune with Protestantism than Catholicism.

I don't see the big deal; Leliana and Zevran both seem to hold dear the concept of a single, life partner in their same-sex relationships. It just isn't ever going to be endorsed on a piece of paper by a Chantry priest. But in the kind of era DAO takes place in, for the purposes of same-sex relationships it's entirely meaningless.

I honestly never understood the interest of homosexuality at all. But then again I guess it must take one to know one.
