Solution:  Removed Additional Hairs for DA mod which in turn significantly reduced RAM usage.

---

Error:
[0x0-0x5c05c].com.transgaming.cider.dragonageorigins    *** error: can't allocate region
[0x0-0x5c05c].com.transgaming.cider.dragonageorigins    *** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug

From what I researched it seems that the game runs out of RAM.  Occasionally I get black textures as well.  I have plenty of RAM (8GB), but it seems to happen when I reach 1.65 GB - 1.75GB of RAM used (according to Activity Monitor utility) by DA:O.

I didn't have this problem (the crash, not the black textures) with 1.04 unless I had been playing
for several hours.  Now, with 1.05 I get this crash ever 30-60 minutes
or whenever I transition to a different area. I presume the crash occurs when I go to a new area because the textures are being loaded and RAM limit is reached.

I've tried lowering my graphics settings, but it doesn't help.

If possible I would like to downgrade to 1.04.  If not, does anyone have any idea as to how I can fix this?

Computer:
- MacBook Pro, 10.6.8
- Intel Core i7 (2.3 Ghz)
- 8 GB RAM
- 1024 VRAM (AMD Radeon HD 6750M)

When I run DA:O the only other app running (besides Finder) is the Activity Monitor

You definitely have memory issues, yes. Do note that the "Mac Version" of DAO is actually the Windows version which runs through a compatibility layer, and as the Windows version cannot use more than 2GB RAM you run out of memory at that point, despite your 8GB system RAM.

Troubleshooting this can be tough, it could be a bug in DAO, Cider, or Mac OS X.

1) Do you use any mods, texture mods in particular? Even tiny ones like additional hair textures. Corrupted texture files can sometimes lead to this type of crash.

2) Please run Disk Utility and repair all permissions. Same thing.

3) Did you try a full re-install yet? Lots of work, and might or might not be effective, but still worth a shot if the game is unplayable. If you do, remember to de-authorize your game in the launcher first, and then delete all of the following folders: /Applications/Dragon Age/, ~/Documents/Bioware/Dragon Age/, and ~/Library/Preferences/Dragon Age Origins Preferences/.

4) If you are an advanced user, you could try to modify your daorigins.exe to handle large addresses. This might allow it to use up to ~3,5GB of RAM. It also might lead to even more, or other bugs, as I do not know if or how Cider handles that change. Still, if you are interested I can supply some basic instructions.

#1 - Actually, I do use additional hair style/texture mods and FDB's skins. I did notice that occasionally if I open the inventory and remove armor the game crashes. However, it happens once per character and I've not been able to get it to repeat for that character...

I have any mods for hi-res armor in my packages folder. I didn't use any mods that provide hi-res texture for landscape either.

#2 - Done, no change.

#3 - No, I didn't reinstall. I bought from Gametree Mac so it will be awhile before I can since i have to redownload.

#4 - I am willing to try, but do you have posts or other material wherein people talking about having done this to daorigins.exe that I could see first? Was the executable for 1.04 large address aware?

None of the DAO executables are large address aware by default. In any case, I just tested it on my system, and with the LAA flag set the game fails to start. Probably incompatible with Cider, a pity.

It is still possible that one of the mods is the root of the problem. I'd try removing one-by-one to see if it improves things. One hair mod caused memory-related crashes for me personally, but it has been some time and I do not remember which one it was, sorry. Of course it might be a non-hair mod as well.

If that and the re-install fails, I am out of my wits. Rolling back to 1.04 sounds like a good idea, 1.05 was mostly meant to fix DLC authorization issues, and if you had no such problems back with 1.04, there is nothing to lose. However I don't know if the Gametree installer still is 1.04, or where to grab 1.04 if this is not the case.

Does a mod's mesh & textures get loaded even if no character is using them?

Edit:  Going over my mod list I realized I had installed Additional Hairs for DA http://social.biowar...m/project/7905/ after playing through 1.04.

I removed this and my RAM usage dropped 400 MB,  Now I am staying within the RAM limit even I jog around Ostagar.
