the first time i saw that image it totally gave me the chills. in a good way.

mostly because the minute i saw the arishock eat sh*t after hawke bested him, i was like..."so i bet i know who's got YOUR job now!" and that seemed to be the general consensus.

visual confirmation of the fact is just fantabulous.

there had better be some cookie snarking in the next comic, or he's just going to be wasting a perfectly good opportunity with those characters.

 Steeeeeeeeeeennnnnnnnn!!! :o *explodes*

Edit: *Ahem.* I'm gonna be pissed if Alistair kills him. Jussayin'. I don't really like the idea of the Warden's companions killing each other, though if they just fought it would be great, especially due to that line of dialogue they had in Origins about Sten telling Alistair to pick up his weapon and fight him to test his skill in battle.

****ING CALLED IT WHO KNOWS HOW LONG AGO.

Seriously I did. I even called that he'd get a badass goatee.

If you didn't kill the Arishok sten dosen't take his place.

The Arishok retires if you didn't kill him because he was older then he appeared. And his failures in Kirkwall demonstrate that he is no longer fit for the role of Arishok. Well, not as much as the Arishok role should be.

That's how I've always seen it, back when I called Sten becoming the Arishok.

Or if you killed sten or didn't release him he dosen't

You were never able to kill Sten. And if you didn't release him, that doesn't negate him being released at any point by someone else -- or even himself.

Can you retire from a position in the Qun? They believe everyone has a role that is as much part of his being as his race. You can't retire from being a human or a kossith.

You can. If in the ensuing years you're unfit for the role you were given -- either through physical or mental deterioration -- the Tamassrans look after you, if it's severe enough. Most still try to serve the Qun, and those that are mentally/physically unable to persevere in their role often commit suicide, because they've quite literally lost their entire being.

And who knows? Perhaps in the 3 years after the Qunari conflict, the Arishok started suffering from dementia or some other mental affliction that robbed him of his ability to serve the Qun.

Or hell, maybe he just saw Sten as being worthy of becoming the new Arishok and retired to train other soldiers/advise Sten. Promotions do happen within the Qun, depending on the field a Qunari is in. So a soldier in the Antaam can rise through the ranks, if he's skilled enough.

Mary Kirby wrote...

It depends on how impared they are. If they're still mentally able, they wind up training the 12-year-olds who are assigned to their old role. If they're not mentally able, or are too physically impared to function without a lot of help, they're looked after by the Tamassrans.

and....

For a culture that's so rigid in it's views on efficiency etc., that's surprisingly compassionate. I was expecting them to be either cast out or euthanised so as not to be a drain on resources.

It's the same mentality the Qunari have toward mages, really. A person can't help being maimed, or suffering dementia, any more than they can help being a mage. They are honored for their willingness to serve their people as best they can, even if their body betrays them. Compassion aside, most of them kill themselves. It causes serious emotional trauma to suddenly lose your entire identity.

Also, I'll be pissed if Sten loses to Alistair. I'll be doubly pissed if Alistair kills Sten.

I mean, Alistair's a good soldier and all, but Sten's a better soldier.

Also, I wonder if Those Who Speak will have Sten continuing his changing views, as he talked about a tad in Origins. Long ago, I liked to think he'd be the Hugh of the Qunari.

And Sten better either have cookies and kittens with him in this comic series or show up at the end of DA3 leading a Qunari invasion with a box of cookies under one arm and a box of kittens under the other, where he then looks to the screen and says...

...

No.

I guess we finally figured out who those hushed up allies of the Grey Wardens are, the Qunari.

Sten went looking for the answer to "What is the Blight?", and he found it. He reported back just how much of a threat the darkspawn, Taint, broodmothers, and Archdemons are to Thedas, as well as the Qunari way of life by default, and now the Qunari are involved.

Hmmm..... I feel sorry for the darkspawn all of a sudden.

Man I really hope more than anything that this is true, the Qunari being the Grey Wardens allies - but i sort of doubt it since the Qunari were attacking the Grey Warden's in Kirkwall in DA2

Ever since I met the Arishok and since knowing your able to kill him I always sort of thought Sten might end up being his sucessor and what that could mean, Would be cool methinks =D
He certainly seems to look like the Arishok in that picture with that regalia on that the Arishok wore, dont remember any other Qunari wearing anything like that.. Plus he has the sword the Arishok had.

Anyway when it comes down to it if they have to fight each other and one has to die.. I hope Alistair is the one that survives.. It hurts to say it though cause they are both very awesome and my favourite companions besides Zevran

I'm no so sure about scenario where you don't rescue him from his cage and he still becomes Arishok.

If he somehow escapes his cage, he has no reason to live/run because he "has no soul" (his sword).
If runs away from darkspawn he still needs to find that sword.
And even if he finds it he didn't help to kill Archdemon + didn't learned much about human/elves/dwarfs if he's not with the Warden.

I'm not sure he would even consider himself worthy to become Arishok after all this... disgrace.

Wouldn't Sten be an Arishok and not the Arishok? Or... is there only one Arishok at a time?

There is only one Arishok(body/military) at any time. Together with the Arigena (mind/crafstmen) and the Ariqun (soul/priesthood) they form the Triumvirate, the ruling body of the Qunari.

They could have became allies after Act II, since we didn't know about the Grey Warden's secret allies until Act III. Which is like 3-4 years later, right? I have a feeling that there might be an Old God around the Tevinter region. Which they don't want to turn into an Archdemon and start a Blight, so they contacted the Grey Wardens.

Or.... The Tevinter Imperium found an uncorrupted Old God, and they will try to free and/or enslave it  to use against the Qunari. Then of course, the rest of Thedas to reconquer it.

Or... The Qunari are just being proactive against a major threat against itself and Thedas, and they see the Grey Wardens as nice allies to have if they decide to go against the Taint. Since, they know their business, and they are wonderfully pragmatic. Just like them!

The comics exist in their own separate canon universe where Alistair is King and Sten has become Arishok. I wonder if and how these comics could affect DA3. As the description of the comic mentions Alistair taking up arms against an old ally and Isabela's involved in the comics then Sten vs Alistair might happen

It pretty much is already. The warden can't kill him, and if he stays in the cage he might be freed by someone else. Or break out when the Darkspawn hit?
Still, I would find it odd if he becomes Arishok because he broke out of a cage.

But it would still be cool for replayability of he is in the next game and has differing personalities depending on his relationship with the warden.

Well. I suppose someone else could have freed him. Fair enough.

I always thought that Sten was some kind of spy for the Qunari. Trying to figure out weaknesses and dangers in Ferelden, that his folk could benefit from in a coming invasion.

I'm not sure I buy this Sten becoming a leader amongst the Qunari though. To me he didn't seem to have any tactical sense or any leadership abilities. So I think it would be a bit weird to give him such a prominent role.

It would be nice to see "Sten" as the new Arishok in DA3 at some point. I'd hate for his return to be restricted to just the comic, as I'm not much of a reader outside of rpgs.
