Do you remember that guy from the bar on Illium who said Asari mind control people to make themselves attractive? It's true. Shepard has been in a coma since the Collector attack at the start of ME2. Everything he has experienced since than has been a dream, which has been heavily influenced by ideas telepathically implanted by Liara, Shepard's caretaker and kidnapper.

Exactly.  Asari aren't dudes because they have breasts and no man parts or man functions.  They don't even identify as men.  The word "patriarch" has no meaning in the Asari language.
