So, I finally got around to buying Dragon Age II the day before yesterday and I'm just about at the part where you set off on Bartrand's Deep Roads expedition. I realize I haven't played too far into the game yet, so I won't comment on the story or the characters or anything like that. I will, however, comment on a certain game design decision as follows:

Whoever it was that thought it would be a good idea to put a cooldown timer on the use of health potions should never be allowed to make any design decisions ever again. I can't tell you how many re-loads I could have avoided in just the first few hours of play if my characters could just use the goddamn health potions that we actually have. I know this might sound crazy, but if I need to have a character drink a health potion, then I need them to drink it right now, not two minutes from now when they'll have been dead for 90 seconds. Did that really not occur to anyone at any step in the design process?

Take Anders along with you. He has two healing spells and a resurrection spell. He'll save you on health potions. There's also Life Ward Potions in tandem with health potions.

Thing of note the second healing spell and resurrection spell both require some stupid mode to be active to use. But if you tell him to use those spells in the tactics menu he will regardless of whether the mode is on or not.

Also the game really comes into its own when you're dealing with threat management. All classes have a way to dump threat (although off memory I can't remember how Warriors drop threat) but rogues are the best at threat management.

If a mage or rogue is drawing too much fire a mind blast or stealth or armistice will really save the day. And thus save health potions.

I really dig stealth but Evade's another good one for rogues since the upgraded version also stuns enemies. Stunned enemies have to reassess the battle field and pick a new target. So Evade dumps your threat rating and resets their targeting... which usually has them take up fighting a Warrior or Mage.

Threat management is really important in this game. And lucky you you've just come in when most of the bugs are gone. I remember when there were quite a few abilities that don't work (I'm not sure if Goad ever worked for the Xbox... it may still be glitched who knows).

Needless to say that lowering cooldowns would also lower the challenge of the game. What is your party and tactics? Which part of the game is causing you trouble?

I found Origins sufficiently challenging without a cooldown on the health poultices.

I prefer to use a party consisting of Mage!Hawke, Varric, Fenris, and Isabela. As for the part of the game...pretty much all of it so far. It's been remarkably consistent in the need for me to reload a save at least once every other mission so far.

The cooldown increase was great. Now you can't just spam health pots.

I use to have difficulty keeping Isabela alive but I'm thinking of trying to use her again. Your party doesn't look that bad to me could be better.

If they are dying a lot you are doing something wrong. Try making them Defensive or Ranged, and add a tactics line for Health < 25% use item health potion. Don't leave it on manual or they might die.

Taking Anders is the best way to keep all of your party alive. Your magehawke can learn some imba healing spells but only after level 10 or 12 I think. Act 2 (after deep roads expedition) also has two new items that will help a lot. Mythal Favor grenades (ressurect ally) and a potion to auto ressurrect you in case of death. Those combined with the health potions might allow you to have an Anders free party if you chose to. Why would you is beyond me, Anders is my favorite and my LI, but to each his own :P

The cooldowns on heal spells and potions means that you have to minimize damage taken and end those tough fights a.s.a.p. Make use of crowd control and do your best to keep your squishy companions in a safe place from range, though that can be hard with the waves of enemies sometimes.

I've gotten through the Deep Roads with Carver tanking, but usually I have Aveline as tank and Anders or mage Hawke healing. That dragon hits hard, and usually gives me more trouble than the final boss.

Also, try to do as many quests as possible before starting the Deep Roads. Ideally, you hit lv 13 right before or after the dragon fight and should be close to lv 15 by the start of act 2.

While the Deep Roads may be giving you trouble, just like with Origins, the game gets easier the more you play and replay it to where deaths are rare, even on the harder difficulties.

After someone first suggested this, I tried it. He dies the most. Too squishy, even with Rock Armor equipped, I guess.

I'd like to. Too bad it seems like 90% of the fights involve the opponents Zerg rushing in waves (with some of them literally dropping out of the sky, as if to rub your nose in it).

You need to use spells that do AOE CC (Area Crowd Control), i.e. Stun / Freeze or immobilize several enemies at once. Also set Anders to ranged and give him Mind Blast with the 2 upgrade points ASAP, to use when he is attacked meleee range. Set your tank to attack anyone that attacks your healer.

Winter's Might, Cone of Cold, Petrify, Tremor, Whirlwind... Those are just the Mage / Warrior CC attacks that knock down enemies. I never play rogue but Varric has some pretty sweet Bianca attacks too. Use it on the Elite or Higher enemies then on the ones giving you trouble in that fight

That should make your party last without too many deaths.

Izzy's fantastic if you play tank. The only times she falters are against the Sky Horror, the secret boss from Legacy, and Leopold. Otherwise Battle Synergy, Goad, Back-to-Back, Stealth, and Evade keep her nice and healthy while she does impressive DPS and finshing Cross class Combos you set up with Pummel Strike and Shield Bash.

I wouldn't recommend her for Mage Hawke's though. And Rogue Hawkes are doing her job. But if you play tank she has a good role on your team if you like her.

Luckily, there's a modification (mod) for this. I've used a mod that lowered the cooldown for health potions from 60 seconds to around 20 or 30 seconds, I think. And the same mod lowered the the cooldown for the use of potions from 30 seconds to 15 or 10 seconds, I think.

Also, if you're playing on normal difficulty, you can try lowering the game's difficulty to easy. No shame in doing this; I've done it myself several times. Also try to get potions to throw or crow venom and such things to pour on your blade. This really does help...

Also, the reason Anders dies a lot is that the game locks him from using equipment, say gloves, armor, boots etc. other than those available for mages. You'll need to get another modification for the game that unlocks the npc's armor slots. I've used this - then you can out any armour on them as long as they have the strengths requirements to wear them.

Fenris is a good fighther, but he needs to be leveled correctly. I've always went with cleave and great cleave and whirlwind as well the ability to out your sword down and stun enemies or have them fly away from you. Varric is nice to, be sure to use his enigmatic flask ability and also please, please update Bianca. Isabela can be great, too, but she needs to used correctly, have her hide in shadows and backstab people and please level her dual wielding abilities/skills... Have her throw bombs and grenades as well - in the game that is.

That is Tremor (or Earthquake) I think, on the same tree as sword pummel

Mind blast does the same for a mage if you pick the 2 upgrades
