Like the tittle says, is it viable to make a magev with no specialisation? Just basic spell trees. I was thinking of primal+elemental and then some spirit or creation. Or some entropy? Also i will be the only mage in the party with varric, aveline and fenrris.

Sure I think I do that with Merrill and Bethany. You have something against healing? or force mage? Bloodmage could be evil. I can see not taking that.
Party wise, I don't see the need for two warriors unless you think it's fun.

It's your game; play it as you like. If things get tough, just lower the difficulty.
You don't have to have a specialization, though that just makes things a bit tougher, as you'll miss out on some useful spells. Your character won't be as powerful as they could be. As long as you're having fun, then don't worry about it. If you feel later on that you could really use group heal or any of the force mage crowd control spells, then you can always pick up a specialization then.

Thanks for the replies. I don't really like spirit healer much and i have already done a spirit/force/blood mage build. So, i want to try a the remaining basic spell trees. I know build doesnt matter in single player games but i don't want to waste 30+ hours only to find my mage to do low damage. So i won't be gimping my dps too much by not taking any specialisation?

you can make just about any mage you like. taking the spec points for just the bonus they supply works just fine. +30 to health and mana are more than enough to let you do what you want.
Low damage will only come if you put your stat points in the wrong areas.
focus on magic, once you hit 42 magic, allow yourself some points in willpower and health. use your attack % in your stat screen to remain near 100% on normal targets and you should have more than enough damage for anything.
I would suggest you go force though. by far the best specs.

So....since i have already done a force mage build, i will just spec spirit healer/bloodmage for bonuses and then concentrate on basic spell trees and put ton of points into magic. Thats it right? Will probably go primal/spirit/entropy. Thats a ton of damage and cc spells. Thanks for the help guys!

You've already decided, but I'll just add some points anyway.Tejaswi wrote...

As Suicidal said, it's certainly viable to just use the spec points for their bonuses and put skill points in elsewhere. My canon play is a mage, and my main mage build is elemental/creation/force/spirit healer. However, I tend to not play with Anders overmuch for RP reasons, so I do like to make sure I have my healing and buffs taken care of.
The trees you take should depend on your preferred party build, in addition to what you find fun to play (it is a game after all). Creation's Heroic Aura/Valiant Aura is extremely powerful and a must have IMO, Haste/Great Haste is also... well... great, especially if you have a rogue in the party. If you're not going to spec into Creation I do suggest you bring Anders along for those two spells alone; he's also really great at using Glyph of Paralysis on clusterd enemies if you set it up in his tactics. You can spec him into Vengeance for damage if you don't care about the healing he provides. If you like to bring Merrill along, she can also spec into Entropy.
About your concern of wasting time played... you don't have the Black Emporium? You can buy respec potions there for yourself and all your friends, so you can experiment freely. IMO that alone is worth the price of the DLC.

Ok thanks for the help guys. It really cleared my mind.
Lastly, does any one know any link to some spirit mage guide? When i searched in google, i found lots of spirit healer builds but nothing on a spirit mage.

Here's my crit-mage: http://social.biowar...5/index/7075118
It's a glass cannon spirit mage build probably dealing the highest damage possible for a mage.
Without the crowd control from force mage you'll probably have survivability issues (unless you're playing on hard), especially if you're taking that party combination you mentioned - But where's the fun without a little bit of risk! haha
