I really liked EDI actually. Yeah, she has a very "idealized" body but what are you going to do? A synthetic created in the image of a human is obviously going to have what's considered a "standard" human body. I guess I can kind of understand people complaining about the lack of realism in video games, 'cause it's true - on the whole everyone is attractive, not overweight, etc...

Really?

You don't get enough People of Walmart vibe in your life already? You need it in your video games too, so frumps and fatties can nod in self-satisfaction and not feel threatened.

Jesus, thanks but no thanks. Pass the cameltoe.

Again, you may sound harsh but I think you've got a point there. Storytelling can be compelling and deep and all the rest, but I think there is no reason to make people in a movie or in a game feel "normal". A couple of eye candy now and there are not a sin, especially if the story is good.

Now, if you realize a game like Bayonetta, there could be some sexism issues, but in a compelling game like Mass Effect? I'm totally okay with the "no ugly people in Space" thing. Well, except Ugly Shepard, offcourse.

"no ugly people in space", you say? Do you forget Allers?

The EDI body was designed to infiltrate the Mars outpost. That kinda explains why it looks the way it does, but it was unnecessary for it to look like that all the time (not sure if I imagined it or if it was a conversation, but somehow I got the impression the body could do limited shape shifting).

I doubt. We're used to see beautiful people in movies and games, but there were beautiful people in movies in the 30s as well. Probably the ugly ones are just being sidelined since nowadays appearence is everything. But I'm not talking about that: having movies and games main characters beautiful is not a sin, that's my point.

What kind of scientist dresses like that?

What kind of anything dresses like anything? It is a science fiction game. How people dress makes as much sense as a race of regenerating Krogan taking over the galaxy.

Nobody should be trying to pull some moral high ground here.  If good looking people didn't sell, you'd see ugly people as the main characters in movies and video games as the rule, not the exception.

After all of this we get the incredibly creepy EDI/Joker romance and a rehash of the movie Bicentennial Man (which I also disliked BTW).

Which you can discourage, like I did in almost all my playthroughs. You don't like it, don't encourage it. It's that simple. Why rant about something that can be avoided?

As for both me in real life and my Shepards, I see it as not my business what machines a person develops a fondness for.

I don't know about not being oversexualized, but in 2 of the 3 costumes she has (counting From The Ashes), she is sporting major toe. I'm a guy, we notice stuff like that, so sue us. You put a girl in a skintight suit and our eyes will hit the key zones first, deny it if you want.

Nope. Only the From Ashes DLC costume has the ******.

Again, if you're going to have an issue with EDI's body, it's a different issue from having an issue with EDI's personality. The body was supposed to likely pass almost all visual inspection by normal human beings. Given that she acted completely normal until TIM told her to deal with you on Mars, the body's shape did exactly what it was supposed to do: Infiltrate.

.......EDI is part of the crew but I would accept her better as a subservient Droid and not a Droid trying to become human.

Wow I'm surprised you had the balls to type something so sexist.  "I have no problems with EDI being sexy, but why couldn't she be the type that was docile and did everything I asked.  You know like how real women should be".  Lord forbid she have her own point of view or prefernces.  The nerve of her!

She, IMO, was trying to do a lot more than understand humanity.

"synthetic seek perfection through understanding"
In case you messed the point of the game........

What? First time I have ever been called sexist. I'm a straight woman. Independent, sucessful, attractive and smart. I donn't find EDI sexy at all, and yes I would prefer my droids to not ask me for sex and dating tips.

Synthetics should stick to their assigned duties and just do as they are programmed. I want my toaster to toast, my car to go when I apply the gas peddle, my smartphone to respond to my inputs and my AI enabled ship to work as designed.

IMO self aware AI's are beyond dangerous.

Playing the game with an emotionless robot as a squadmate is boring. I almost never brought her with me. Like Jacob in ME2..

Wtf? Did you even read what I wrote? My point was not that I think a larger subsection of real life humans should be represented in video games. I think it's ME is fine the way it is. My point was that if someone complains about the oversexualization of EDI, then they should also be complaining about the oversexualization of many other characters (and the perhaps the idealized representation of humans in general). It's hypocritical if they just single EDI out.

Again, I personally, am not arguing that things are too sexualized/ idealized/ etc in ME. I'm not starting a petition for obese people in space. And no, I'm not asking for "people of a Walmart vibe" in my games. What a douche thing to say though.

Edit: grammar

Not reading 8 pages of responses.

But my thoughts on EDI was that she INHERITED the body. The body was built by Cerberus to infiltrate the Mars archives installation to steal the info on the Crucible. To make her more appealing to the nerdy scientists, Cerberus made her look sexy.

EDI simply inherited it to use so she could have a mobile platform. She never created the body.

I'm fine with EDI being mobile, it gave a sort of more personal feel to her. I loved her quips and comments in ME2, but I did miss her when I was on missions a bit. Her dialogue was written really well in ME2 and being able to interact with her more in ME3 was a good thing.

My own beliefs are that if an AI can be considered sapient, then it should have all tge rights (and responsibilities) of a sapient being irrespective of how much others fear it.

I hate EDI because she sucks. could have had Legion, Mordin, Wrex, meranda, or Jack instead of EDI and it would have been 10x better. Same goes for James the situation Vega

Well i beg to difer. I liked James and i like EDI. It is fun to see again our old acquaintances but i also like to meet new ones.

There are these people who cried for weeks during ME2 because Ash or Kaidan were not playable characters. So what? We got to meet new ones and now people are crying because they were nto playable in ME3.

It never changes heh.... People always cry about somethin...

James and EDI add nothing to the game, and most people didn't like them. they where extremely boring characters. unlike pretty much everyone from ME2

I disagree. James and EDI added things to the game and they were extremely fun characters, like pretty much everyone from ME2.

There... We could keep arguing like that for days so ill just leave it at that and let you brood alone.

you obvioulsy don't spend to much time around here. there have been dozens of threads filled with James and EDI hate. A lot of people around here don't like them
