Why druids level up mediocre... then suddenly they explode and suddenly they are 2 levels above everyone... then they suddenly get massive experience gaps after level 10(ish) and are so below everyone else?

Also... if mages have 9 tiers of magic... why do theyhave to level sooo slowly...:pinched::pinched::pinched:

I love second edition and all (except weapon and class restrictions and lack of pally/mage (which is possible due to the mechanics)) but... this is just insane and confusing.

Druid levelling was a consequence of the D&D rules for druids. Effectively they were moving up the druid hierarchy after level 11 - by the time they got to level 15 they were a Grand Druid. There was only supposed to be one of these allowed at a time, which explains the way the druid stronghold quest is arranged in BG2. This arrangement was fine in SoA, but capping at level 15 didn't make sense when ToB was brought out so they added further levels beyond 15, which is why the XP progression now looks funny.

Mage level 9 spells are pretty powerful - presumably it shouldn't be made too easy to get hold of them!

I kina said it wrong i think;
I should have referred to the uselessness of level 1 mages and how they are the slowest to level up before level 5-6.
In BG1 they are not as useful except for magic missile spam and ability to use wands.

Edit: And summon spells once i get them.

Mages are powerful even in non-BGT games. Level 1 solo mages in vanilla BG1 have a hard time because they lack the HP boost from Find Familiar. However, they still have Sleep, which beats just about every encounter in the first few maps. With that they should be able to level a few times.

Once you get Web, Haste, and Slow, you can deal with almost all early encounters. Invisibility deals with enemy mages.

By level 7, you have caught up with most other classes in levels and you get the really powerful stuff.
