Perhaps it's just me but I found the romance dialogue in 2 to be incredibly jarring. Coming back from the Chantry after Anders just killed his friend/lover/whatever and having Hawk disregard that and get right into the blatant flirting was terribad.

It'd be nice in 3 if the Romances felt a little more natural in terms of dialogue and interactions. Maybe then i'd be inclined to pursue one.

The problem with DA2 is it has very restrictive time table for companion interaction. Everything is scheduled and as a result the interactions just aren't natural, it kind of breaks the flow of the relationship.

Origins by comparison was running purely on the influence system which proved to be equally unsuccessful, due to the fact that you could be playing for quite literally 2 hours and already have used up the majority of romantic dialogue.

I, personally, believe that romantic dialogue should progress through influence *and* game progression, so that you're capable of moving forward but not finishing the entire romance arc in a matter of hours.

I also believe that Bioware need to stop with the continuous strain of mindless followers.

The fact that Fenris will continue a romance with a Mage Hawke who openly supports Mages and Blood Magic and Magical Demon Fairies is just... Game-breaking. Fenris isn't as emotionally dependent on Hawke as Anders is, there is no reason for him to be so clingy that he would completely overthrow all his personal beliefs just to get some.

Beliefs need to matter and choices need to make a difference... There need to be consequences to your actions, there needs to be confrontation. There needs to be a point where you push them too far and the romance stops, where the character just says "No, you are wrong and this should stop".

Uh.. Looks like i ranted again.... Ahem, that's, uh, just my opinion.

Even less if you use the Feast Day Gifts set. I used the Grey Warden Hand Puppet on Alistair this playthrough and he was in love with me in, oh, about 5 minutes. ^_^ I realise that obviously it was my choice to make but I actually realised I miss the build up and progression of the relationship that doing it properly gives you. I didn't use the Gifts for any other party members and when Morrigan gave me the 'actually you're not a total idiot' speech it really made me feel like I'd earned it. B)

Yes yes yes. A million times yes.

Basically a combination of the two would be ideal. I do wish there were LIs who rejected you based on your choices as opposed to your sexuality or simply the fact they're not available as a LI. But given DGs comment about not restricting players I'm not sure this will happen?

Hawke is the master of bad flirting.

I mean

Fenris asks if you want to hear how he escaped, and Hawke... "I enjoy listening to you talk." Great Hawke. Aren't we lucky that Fenris apparently is into bad flirting. Really.

I do think a mage Hawke supporting mages being with Fenris can make sense depending on his actions and their interactions. My current Hawke is a mage, but he's also friendly to Fenris, happy to slaughter every slaver he runs into, generally disapproves of blood magic and rejects every demon he runs into. The progression of their relationship seems about as natural as the ones with the other party members.

But I do think that the relationships developing with the companions could stand to be more complex. And that the romance dialogue could use some serious improvement.

Or how about (and I paraphrase):

Fenris: Danarius wants to rip the flesh from my body.
Hawke: Damn you like good tonight, wanna hang at my place later? ;)

Except I kinda love dorky awkwardly-flirting Hawke  And I agree with you about what you said about mage Hawke making sense with Fenris.  In fact, I find it to be one of the most fulfilling friendmances (not rivalmance) in the whole game.

I think it's fine if the PC's actions become so extreme that NPCs start to leave the party.  But so long as you play a reasonable and kind character, romances should run smoothly ...... and realistically.

He can be adorable at times, but there are lines that are just... What Hawke D: even i can see that was a terrible pick up line and I am certainly no expert on that stuff. And then there's Fenris going on about how his memories came back for a moment and what does Hawke do? Suggest they should have more sex if that's the result :| At least Fenris calls him out on that one. I do love his general reactions to the awkward flirting like chuckling at first and then groaning at your example.

I love mage!Hawke/Fenris c: my first playthrough was the friendmance and on on my second one now I'm trying out the rivalmance. Friendmance is nicer, I think, but depending on how the rivalmance goes it can still make sense. the rivalry I got from Fenris was pretty much only for supporting mages (lying to Thrask, letting Feynriel go, saying the circle is not a solution). there was a bit because of Hawke thinking that Hadriana's "You have a sister" revelation sounded like a very bad attempt to talk herself out of the situation and from when Hawke promised to visit Merrill. Looking at their general interaction I don't get the impression that Fenris hates Hawke for it or anything.

It does, however seem a little self destructive, at least on Hawke's side (and I had to redo Bitter Pill so I could do Questioning Beliefs before it just to get Fenris to throw Hawke against the wall) but that fits my current Hawke.

Rivalmance is interesting, but friendmance is definitely the more fulfilling one.

And I should probably try the other romances to see more of Hawke's flirting. though considering that the two flirt options I took for Anders resulted in "Am I making *you* uncomfortable :D" and "I won't lose you to this!"...
