I have a few questions.

  • I know there is no Arcane Warrior class in Dragon Age 2. Considering that the staff can also be an effective melee weapon, what build comes close to DAO Arcane Warrior?

  • What Mage tree is better for destruction?  Primal, Elemental, Blood Magic and Force Mage.

  • Is it possible to be an effective Jack of All trades mage like in Dragon Age Origins, or do you have to specialise?

  • Is it possible to build the Rogue as a substitute mage? If so what build works best?

  • What strengths do each of the characters bring to my team? (Bethany, Carver, Isabela, Sebastian, Talis, Varric, Aveline, Fenris, Merrill, Anders)

1. There's nothing really like an Arcane Warrior in DA2.

2. Elementalists get more overall damage boosts, but Primal has excellent synergy. Blood Magic and Force Magic are both very powerful, but they are specializations and should be treated as such. If you are playing on any difficulty but nightmare, stick with whatever you like best. If you are playing on nightmare, I suggest picking up at least two primary damage types due to enemy elemental resistances and immunities.

3. Specializing in DA2 is much better than generalizing.

4. That depends on what you mean by a substitute mage. As a rogue, you'll be much better at single target damage and less proficient at area damage than a mage. You'll have some panic button stun effects, but won't have the area battlefield control of a mage.

5. Oi, really? In Combat:

- Bethany: She is one of two mages you'll have access to with Heal. Blank slate otherwise
- Carver/Fenris: Two handed damage dealer and/or tank.
- Aveline: Sword and Shield warrior tank
- Isabela: Melee damage dealer, offtank, lock picker. Does not scale well into Nightmare.
- Varric/Sebastian: Ranged damage dealer/battlefield controller/lock picker
- Merrill: Blood magic-using damage dealer/battlefield controller.

They've also got their own individual personalities that they bring to the conversations. Fenris is angsty and hates mages, Anders is angsty and hates templars, Isabela and Varric love snarking, Merrill is angsty and innocent, Sebastian is religious, Aveline is serious.

2. to me it more about the cross class combo's. I think there's one with staggers and chain lightning/chain reaction. This combo also doen't have friendly fire on nightmare on the other hand I have trouble on nightmare and prefer hard setting difficulty.

3. Jack of all trades is good but you want to get higher order spells which require specialization.

5. I like high strength Aveline with no points in willpower enough Constitution for your shield which is 18 for mage's friend.. She hands out your staggers and can also take advantges of Disorientes with Scatter and Assualt.

Let's say I create a build that I don't like, can I respec?
Also, at what level does one tend to reach when they've done every single DLC, every story mission, sidequest, everything and beat the game? Is it level 28?

You can respec. You need an item called the Maker's Sigh, which is purchasable at the Black Emporium. Not sure how to get it if you don't have that DLC. Pretty sure it's included if you get the game new, though.

I think you max out at 27 or 28 if you do all of the content. DLC items are generated based on your character's level, so if you want better gear you can wait till the end to do the DLC.

Thanks for the advice.

Your name makes me so hungry that I am turning into zombie.
The only difference being that instead of searching for brains, I'm searching for Ice Cream.

Okay so build wise which of these builds sounds better?

White Mage build.

Arcane
Creation
Spirit Healer

Red Mage Build

Spirit Healer
Primal
Elemental

Force of Nature Build

Force Mage
Arcane
Creation

Black Mage

Primal
Elemental
Force Mage

Black Mage sound the best. I like Primal and Elemental is strong. I think other people like Force Mage although I haven't gotten the hang of it. Oh I didn't see Red Mage there that would be more my speed, ha ha. Every mage needs creation I think for haste and heal spells.

I haven't played Dragon Age 2.
I'm very confused.

Fenris is a warrior who hates mages.
When he fights he glows blue.
Is he a Templar? Is there some sort of Elven magic that he refuses to acknowledge as magic because he's a hypocrite?

Why is Fenris glowing?
What does glowing do in battle?
Does it enhance his damage output?
Does it mean he takes less damage?
Does it boost his agility?
Does glowing blue use up stamina?
Is he a lyrium potion addict?

Does he have a variety of colours he can glow as? Such as red, green, yellow, purple, white, orange?

Where does his glowing blue ability even come from?
Do lots of Elves glow in battle?
Is it a Dalish thing?

How is using magic to boost your phyical prowess (like an Arcane Warrior) any different to using spells to turn the tide in battle? Why is his weird glowing abilities acceptable but not the vast array of other spells that mages use all the time?

The only other time I seen characters with a blue glow is Mass Effect. In that Universe they're known as biotics?
Is Fenris' glowing blue similiar to biotics? Did he get an implant?

A:  He... kinda... uses magic. All the tattoos on his body are actually lyrium that was etched into his skin by his former mage owner (Fenris was a slave from Tevinter)

His tattoos light up when using special abilities provided by them.
Looks cool.
Can't remember the exact discription, but it is a special ability that boosts a lot of stats.
Yes, it does use stamina.
No.

An arcane warrior is actually a mage that has trained to use armor and weapons.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't read your question all that well. There really isn't all that much difference, you can just use armour and weapons instead of robes and staffs, and you get a couple of specialized spells. I would assume that (in-game) those abilities are easier to hide on a battlefield than a fireball.

The abilities aren't actually all that accepted.
Templars do use a type of magic, but pretend it isn't.

Biotics are ME's version of magic, but supposedly science-based, so...
in a way it's the same, but not...

Hope that helps! :D
