DAO and DA2 both had male characters in all their big trailers and stuff (though for the origin trailers in DAO, there were some female protagonists at least). Think it's time for a woman to be the iconic character in marketing? Or perhaps try to release every trailer twice, for each gender?

DA3 will probably get a female [insert protagonist's second name here] trailer like female Shepard got for ME3.

DA:O had a Marketing!Cousland in the cgi ads, but also managed to have both male and female characters in the posters (as seen here and in the trailers that were made for each origin.

As I recall, no one freaked out or was put off from buying the game because both male and female versions of the Warden were shown in marketing. So it would be pretty great if they did either alternate genders or produce multiple versions of trailers and posters.

Personally, I just want to see screenshots and ingame footage of the female version of the character before the game comes out. It would be nice if the marketing mascot was a female version of the character (especially because it would make it much more likely that I would buy t-shirts and figures of a female iconic character), but it's not my biggest concern.

I've no problem with it personally, but from a marketing perspective it might put some people off if they got the impression you could only play as a female.

This would be nice. I liked Garrett (default M!Hawke) and everything, but it would be nice if Marian had got a similar amount of exposure.

I'm hoping for a switch around box case like ME3 had at the very least.

The idea that Dragon Age games need an 'iconic' main character is very likely based on the popularity of Commander Shepard. It's a notion I disagree with. Even with DA 2's focus on Hawke, the story wasn't about Hawke and Hawke never had a level of importance that the Commander did.

Attempting to market two different franchises the same way is not a good idea. You want them to feel different from one another, not the same.

Would it be too confusing to market both at the same time? Marian and Garret did look like the male and female version of the same character. If they'd been side by side in the promotional material imo it would have worked.

Of course this is assuming that there's not going to be race choices in DA3.

I wouldn't mind some advert with a female being the star but in any that mainly advertise the story should stick with one gender to avoid confusion

There is truth to this. In DA games these characters seem more like guest-stars - playing their part and moving on, important, but not pivotal in the larger scheme of things. Shepard was different.
Perhaps, there should be less emphasis on figures like Hawke and the Warden in future marketing campaigns.

That's one way of ensuring Kidd buys an SE along with the CE. So I can confirm at least one more sale for such a practice!

Wise words, I suppose =)

If they use a female kossith as the iconic character, it would be a huge statement. I'd also laugh.

I'd rather they nix the whole "iconic" thing completely, it's unnecessary for a series that doesn't stick to a protagonist for more than a single game.

Yeah, they should rather make some trailers solely with the companions and villains, but keep the hero for ourselves to imagine and create...

And this of course nothing to do with the fact that male and female Hawkes as well as male and female Shepards still haunt my nightmares as butt-ugly and nowhere near I envisioned them...^^

I know, beauty is highly subjective, but calling either of them "butt-ugly" is a bit of an overstatement, don't you think?

Why not make the PC canonically female instead of doing the main female companion as lead marketing lady? I'd be down for that.

This right here.

Of course, I would prefer they ditch iconic protagonists completely for ALL games like this. The fact that you can create your PC however you like is great and should be a major selling point.

Advertising Mass Effect with yet another space marine dude was a strike against it.

That said...

I'd be a liar if I said that this happening wouldn't be an awesome breath of fresh air. Probably won't happen though.

Because these are the same people responsible for the "Your mom hates Deadspace 2" campaign. Marketing a game with anything other than a brown-haired thirty-something white male would make their collective heads explode.

...yeah...

it'd be cool, tho. there's some pic released with the image of a female..inquisitor? I think. Her back is to us, and she's walking stoutly through the whipping winds. With her red cloak flapping behind her.

For some reason I picture her as the canon PC.........can't even see her face, but...

Like someone said, it's not my biggest concern, but it would be a pleasant surprise.

How about a woman of color? Can't say there has been many that were leads in video games.

No, thank you. Pretty much everything mentioned above and...I'd rather not have cc content locked to this "iconic" person. Marian hair was too sexy for that.
