Hard choice.  I think Nathaniel edges out the tortured templar though not by much.  Kind of a fangirl of both here for different reasons.

If I had my pick of any guy from Dragon Age though it would be Bann Teagan.

I was pretty hocked up on cold medicine when I wrote that post initially and when I came back to the thread and read it I didn't realise it was me that had written it. I was all 'I totally agree with that'. Just as well I didn't quote it and agree eh?

Actually I think it'd be cool if the next Dragon Age allowed a PC who likes more than one to romance both at the same time (either secretly) or depending on the romance's personality, in an open polygamous relationship.

So...cast my vote for BOTH Nathaniel AND Cullen as romance options! My only hard choice will be picking one over the other (one reason I don't romance Alistair AND Leliana at the same time).  And frequently the cause of more than one Zevran or Morrigan romance failure in my Origins playthroughs.

DA2 allowed a little more leeway if done in a certain order enabling Hawke to have more than one romantic option, but still having to choose ONE person by a certain point to romance.

While, in theory I agree, I don't think Cullen comes across as the sort who'd be happy sharing.

I'd previously have said the same about Nathaniel but read a particularly good fanfic the other day in which he was all about sharing which has opened my mind to him somewhat lol...

Not to bashing such a great tread... It was always very hard for me in DAA NOT to kill Nathaniel. In HN run I left him alive only for metagaming reasons (needed a rogue asap). But again, half of our companions would never be recruited if we take it seriously.

Guess what I mean to say - Cullen is my choice here.

I thought it would be hard not to kill him as well, esp after reading the penny arcade comic, but my first playthrough was on my Paladin path HNF warden.  I wanted to get to know the character despite the bad blood between the Cousland's and the Howe's, and I had this whole RP reason in the back of my head of her having been friends with him as kids.  After talking to him in the cell, she realized he was really in the dark about the atrocities his father did, and killing him A) wouldn't bring back her family and would be punishing the son for something his father did, which wasn't justice.  The healing had to begin somewhere, and if the feud just continued, she never would.  Plus I needed a rogue too, so he lived.

It kind of colored the rest of my playthroughs.  Even after getting Sigrun, seeing the angry Nathaniel go from broody, angry guy to an honorable friend and downright loveable  (I loved it when his approval rose and he would say some sweet little thing when I clicked him to open lockboxes or find traps) meant he stayed in my group from beginning to end of Awakenings.

I'll sing in harmony with the rest of you....why not both! I lean a bit more towards Nathaniel, but I have this story in my head about Cullen that would work wonderfully as a LI for the next DA PC...just keeping it on the DL....OK?

Having Both as a option would be awesome. But I don't think we'd get that wish Our darling Devs dont roll that way. IF they did we would be in their debt the rest of our lives. Could you imagine the oppertunities with that talk about a game being replayable!!!!

I don't think Nathaniel will be an option. When given a choice of which NPC to handwave being a returnee from Awakenings, instead of going with the one who ACTUALLY WAS in the Free Marches at one point, they went with the crazy mage instead.

Thus, instead of the awesome that could have been a romanceable Nathaniel (why can't I even just FLIRT with the one we get in DA2???) we got the insane abomination I wanted to muzzle everytime he opened his mouth.

Nathaniel, no contest.

I'm not sure what it is about Cullen, but I just never got into his character. I came to respect him, but not really like him. Sometimes I think that a rivalry-type romance would be entertaining for the next game (especially for a mage PC), but honestly I'm not really that fond of him.

Nathaniel, though . . . of all characters from Origins, Awakening, and DAII, he's the one I'd like to return as a companion the most. He won't, I'm fairly sure; but a girl can dream.

Also: Bann Teagan. Dear Maker, yes.
