Society will take Shepard as man before they will a woman. Not because that's my personal preference but that's the way society works.
Male protagonists go over better with audiences. This IS a fact. It's terrible but that's the way it is.
There is no canon.
"Society" can grow up. Until then that has no bearing on the canon of the series.
I do get that's why we get male posterboys, but even that is changing.
