I honestly feel that from a sales perspective, and in light of all the heat BioWare has been taking. That Morrigan is a MUST in DA3. She would be a olive branch to bringing back the DA:O crowd, and will motivate some pre-orders.

Not necessarily. People are wary about anything that's coming with the next Dragon Age and more-so with existing content that were favorites of former fans.
Many that hear rumors of so-and-so or such-and-such making a return appearance experience a moment of panic.
How would you like it if your beloved Morrigan becomes a weak, helpless idiot in the next Dragon Age? They might think of it as turning her into a more-likeable character to appeal to a wider audience.
Panicking yet?

Not for me... I wouldn't mind never seeing her again. Though since my canon play involves the DR, I guess I might have to put up with her at some future point.Ryoten wrote...

At any rate, to my way of thinking something like this would be much more fun as a surprise, kind of like how seeing Anders was in DA2 (I never did any pre-DA2 forum reading, so it was surprising to me). I also agree with Reggard above in that people might be concerned (or even turned off the game completely) about retcons if they use her as a selling point. So in the end, you might end up losing as many people from that as you might gain from Origin fans coming back.

Frankly, aside from the DR, I really didn't have much use for Morrigan. My prefered Warden was a mage anyway, making her skills redundant, and if I was a rogue or warrior, I took Wynne everywhere with me since she had mass heals and rez. I liked her from a character standpoint, and some of what she had to say was funny in Origins (particularly when she didn't like what you were doing), but I really don't want to see her back as a companion. Esp since DA seems to be going, 'one new protagonist per game' instead of sticking with the warden through all installments, I don't want returning friends coming back again and again like a bad penny.
Look at how they implemented Oghren who may be maxed approval in Origins, but treats the Warden as a practical stranger in Awakenings, and minus the sense of humor I enjoyed in Origins' Oghren. Plus his damn gift approval is bugged. It is less jarring if you play an Orlesian, which is what I suspect they preferred you do. But still...
And look how they implemented Anders into DA2. He could have been sent back to the Circle instead of joining the wardens, left behind and dead at the end of Awakenings, or any number of handwaved fates. Instead they inflict him on Hawke and Co.
And Morrigan was romanced by any number of players out there who would either A) be pissed because she's not romanceable again or
be pissed because she's 'cheating' on the Warden with someone else. There'll be no pleasing her fans no matter what Bioware does.
In a cameo/meet and greet, go do this quest for me capacity, she would do well since DA3 is supposed to be in Orlais (where Morrigan was rumored to be seen if you didn't do the DR with her), and no matter what choices you make, Morrigan survives (even the scene in Witch Hunt can be argued that she lives if you try to kill her). They wouldn't have to implement OGB because she would be a peripheral character at most in that capacity, and a lot of players didn't do the DR either.
So returnees, I've had enough of em, no matter how much I love some of the companions, they always seem to come back fubared. I'm all for new crew for new PC.

If Flemeth is now a reoccurring character, I doubt Morrigan will be far behind. I just hope to freaking god she's not a companion.

I romance her with my Warden, so it would be strange for her to be romanced again by another character. I wouldn't oppose to her being non-romanceable companion or simply NPC.

Morrigan is a MUST for DA3 only for her hardcore fans. We don't all love Morrigan. Look at me; I love Fenris, but I don't think he's a MUST for DA3, even though I know he has a lot of fans (like me). It would seem a silly thing to even suggest.
Or if you want to go the DA:O route, Alistair has lots of fans, but he is not a MUST for DA3. I am not particularly fond of him (don't mind him, but still), and many others feel the same way.

Who exactly is the "DA:O crowd" and what makes you think they care about Morrigan?

If Morrigan isn't in DA3 and/or not with my warden for a reason other then death... I will give up on Bioware games once and for all. With all there mess-ups I've been screwed out of nearly a grand worth of stuff. But this will do it.

Having Morrigan as a Companion would charge up the base if I'm any indication. I don't much care about the Warden. His story is done.

She doesn't need to be a companion, just have enough time on screen, and have enough dialogue.
