 Hey,

So people often say that "there is no Canon".

Well, there is.

The fact that in ME2, If you did not import a ME1 save certain choices were forced upon you (Wrex Dead, Udina on council, Rachni dead, etc).

Thus, those choices were considered canon by bioware.

The European Canon does.

And you'd better be ready for it.

It's too late. TOO LATE.

No. Canon means it's the same for everyone.

I was always bothered when people refuse to admit that Cannon exists.

Default=/=canon. Would you also argue that sheploo is canon?

I don't think that's canon, but more of a random 'whatever' kind of thing.

The only things I see as canon are characters and fixed situations unalterable by character decisions, imports, etc.

Totally.

There is no canon. I often wonder why people insist that there is.

It is not wrong for them to make a canon for future work, however, it is bad form for them to start imposing it on the last chapter of Mass Effect, a series where your choices mattered. It makes the save transfer system pointless.

Yes, there is canon. Numerous things. Those are things that exist and aren't affected one bit by a player. Shepard exists/existed. Jack exists/existed. The Quarian/geth wars are canon, etc. Back lore is canon.

That would be disappointing.

But you're right. There are things that are canon like the fact that Shepard exists and the rules and principles of mass effect, etc.

But as far as storyline events, there doesn't seem to be a set way how things go down. It's one of the things I love about ME. It gives me the chance to replay situations differently and interact with characters differently as well.

If you don't choose to import any file and start fresh in ME2 because they will base that new Shepard on a Renegade character because they know that most people would choose Paragon first.

Canon does exist. It just has a harder time existing in Mass Effect. But it exists freely elsewhere.

There's canon that is universal, as the existence of Shepard, Garrus, that there were something called Pinnacle station and so on; however, there is also a canon that only applies to each player - for one, it is that Wrex survived Virmire, for another that Wrex was killed. That canon only exist in each player's head.

Yes, canon does exist:
- Eden Prime is always attacked by Sovereign;
- Shepard always activates the beacon;
- Shepard always becomes a Spectre;
- The rachni are always cloned back into existance (regardless of whether Shep later destroys them again);
- Saren, Benezia, the Thorian and Sovereign always die;
- Shep always dies to a Collector surprise attack;
- Cerberus always brings him/her back, and he/she always "joins" them;
- Mordin, Garrus, Miranda, Jacob, Jack and Grunt are always recruited for the suicide mission;
- The collector base is always stormed;
- etc...

There's in fact quite a lot of canon within the context of the game, however there's a difference between canon and default, and the devs said repeatedly there's no canon when it comes to Shepard choices throughout the game, default choices for non-import games are just that: default choices.

Could this change in the future? Possibly, but for now it's like this...
